Syracuse coach Dino Babers said receiver Taj Harris apologized to the team for an obscene hand gesture late in Saturday's loss to Liberty. Asked whether the incident will impact Harris' playing status for Saturday, Babers said discipline will be handled internally. "Taj stood up on Sunday, he apologized to the team," Babers said. "We have addressed that. It's internal discipline, and we will handle that within the family. Young men making a mistake. We all understand."   10/20/20 - Taj HarrisrSr/2024, Rutgers, 6-1, 180 (DS#999 WR) + More +

Syracuse athletic director John Wildhack said an obscene hand gesture by junior wide receiver Taj Harris late in Saturday's loss to Liberty was "inappropriate" and "unacceptable" and that the football program will address the incident. A television camera captured Harris' gesture with two minutes remaining in the game and SU trailing, 38-21. The image was shown during the broadcast. It's unclear if the gesture will impact Harris' playing status for next week's game at No. 1 Clemson. "Taj Harris' gesture late in today's game was inappropriate, unacceptable and in no way reflective of the standards we expect of our student-athletes," Wildhack said in a statement Saturday evening. "His behavior will be addressed by the football program within the department of athletics." Harris led all receivers in Saturday's game with nine catches for 96 yards and a touchdown. On the season, Harris leads SU with 26 receptions, 434 yards and four scores. - The Post-Standard

  10/11/20 - Ifeanyi MaijehrSr/2023, Rutgers, 6-1, 289 (DS#58 DT) + More +

Temple Football head coach Rod Carey announced that two more players earned single-digit honors. Linebacker William Kwenkeu switches from number 35 to number 4 while defensive tackle Ifeanyi Maijeh will now sport the #9 jersey after changing from his childhood favorite #88. A Temple tradition that was originally instituted by then head coach Al Golden in 2009, the awarding of single-digits has become one of the most symbolic in all of college football. The toughest players, on and off the field, as awarded by their teammates, has become an identity and badge of honor to those who are deemed "Temple Tuff." In fact, several other college football programs have adopted the tradition.

Maijeh, a redshirt junior from New York, earned first team All-AAC and All-ECAC honors last season after finishing eighth in the conference in sacks per game (0.60). In addition to that, he recorded 6.5 sacks, 10 tackles for loss, and five QB hits, all numbers that ranked top three on the team. This year, Maijeh starts the season in the spotlight as he earned preseason All-America accolades and was listed on watch lists for the Bednarik Award, the Nagurski Trophy, and the Outland Trophy. "It's truly an honor, I've always wanted to be a single-digit since I was a freshman," said Maijeh. "I knew what it stood for and respected the people who wore it. Getting a single-digit means leaving my legacy behind, which was also a personal goal of mine." - Temple Football

  07/24/20 - Aaron LewisrSr/2025, Rutgers, 6-4, 255 (DS#87 DE) + More +

Rutgers made a huge splash Monday when former Williamstown (N.J.) standout Aaron Lewis announced on Twitter that he was transferring to Rutgers following a short stint at the University of Michigan. The four-star defensive lineman is gifted and has the work ethic to complement those blessings. Lewis talks speed: "I ran a 4.7-flat the first day I arrived at Michigan at about 245 pounds. We were supposed to run them again but we never did. We had to evaluate ourselves before camp. I ran 4.6 unofficial when clocking with my guys. And then we got sent home. I'm thinking I can get myself down to a 4.6, 4.5 with a lot of lifting and stretching." What's he been told he'll play? "They told me edge rusher. They said with my speed, I could possibly play off the edge like a linebacker (or rush end). And as my body develops, five-tech, three-tech. So, I'm going to be playing inside and outside. Moving around like I was in high school." - Star Ledger

  07/18/20 - Aaron LewisrSr/2025, Rutgers, 6-4, 255 (DS#87 DE) + More +

Could former Williamstown (N.J.) defensive end Aaron Lewis return home to the Garden State after entering the transfer portal on Wednesday? The 6-6, 260-pound four-star defensive lineman was the second player to commit to Michigan's 2020 class. However, his time in Ann Arbor was short lived. Lewis migrated there in January and spent more than two months with the his new team prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. But, due to undisclosed health issues of his mother, Lewis plans to transfer close to home, he told NJ Advance Media on Wednesday. "She will be fine, but closer to home is where I need to be right now," Lewis said. Does that mean Rutgers, I asked. "I guess we will see," he replied. Lewis pegs the University of Maryland and Penn State as contenders which also provide him the chance to play Power 5 ball (relatively) close to home. - Star Ledger

A true freshman on the Michigan football team has entered the NCAA transfer portal. Defensive end Aaron Lewis, who enrolled early in January, is pursuing a transfer, a Michigan spokesperson confirmed to MLive. Lewis, one of four defensive ends Michigan signed in the 2020 class, was a three-star prospect coming out of Williamstown High in New Jersey. He was primarily recruited by linebackers coach Anthony Campanile and safeties coach Chris Partridge, who both have deep ties to New Jersey but departed Michigan for other coaching opportunities this offseason -- after Lewis had signed in December. - Ann Arbor News

  06/23/20 - Noah VedralrSr/2024, Rutgers, 6-1, 200 (DS#999 QB) + More +

At 4 p.m. on April 28, Noah Vedral's name appeared in the NCAA transfer portal. Within minutes, the Nebraska quarterback became the most popular college football player on the planet, judging by how his Twitter follows erupted. Three Rutgers assistants - offensive coordinator Sean Gleeson, director of recruiting Timothy Silvernail and director of player personnel Eric Josephs - were among the legion of college football staff members who followed Vedral on social media shortly after news of his departure from Nebraska broke. Greg Schiano took a different approach. The Scarlet Knights head coach immediately sought game film to see if Vedral would be the right quarterback to add to a program with no proven quarterback on the depth chart.

"We have a system when guys go into the portal," Schiano said Monday. "He goes immediately through a channel, and when I watched (Vedral) that evening, I knew right away we had to try to get him on our team if we could." Included in the more than 3,300 "likes" was nod from Gleeson, the Scarlet Knights' first-year offensive coordinator who will try to utilize Vedral's dual-threat talents this season. "I think the most attractive thing about Rutgers is Schiano and Gleeson," Vedral told the Lincoln (Neb.) Journal Star on May 13. "(Schiano) is a really good coach and he's had success. He's been a lot of places and he knows how the process of rebuilding is. I believe in him. I'm also really excited about Coach Gleeson. I think I'll do well in his offense. It's my style and it's things I do well." - Star Ledger
