  01/07/21 - Marcus WilliamsonrSr/2022, Ohio State, 5-10, 186 (DS#42 CB) + More +

Marcus Williamson waited four seasons to finally break into the Ohio State football rotation in the secondary. The senior decided to take that breakthrough and roll it into a fifth season. Williamson said Wednesday he plans to return for 2021, taking advantage of an NCAA decision that no eligibility would accrue for the 2020 season. That ruling was made in anticipation of potential disruptions due to the coronavirus pandemic. Williamson opened the season as Ohio State's starting slot cornerback and held that role throughout the season. Entering Monday's national championship game against Alabama, he ranks fourth on the Buckeyes with 25 tackles and has a pair of pass breakups. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Justin Fields threw six touchdown passes to outshine Trevor Lawrence and No. 3 Ohio State avenged last season’s painful College Football Playoff loss to Clemson with a 49-28 victory in the Sugar Bowl semifinal Saturday night. The Buckeyes (7-0) head to the CFP title game for the first time since the inaugural playoff to face No. 1 Alabama on Jan. 11 at Hard Rock Stadium in South Florida. Ohio State beat the Crimson Tide in the semifinals on the way to the 2014 national championship. In a matchup of quarterback prodigies from Georgia, Fields might have given the Jacksonville Jaguars something to think about what do to with that first pick in the NFL draft. Lawrence is the presumptive No. 1, but Fields outplayed him on this night, going 22 for 28 for 385 yards. He set a Sugar Bowl record for TD passes and did it playing more than half the game after taking a vicious shot the side that forced him to miss a play and spend time in the medical tent.

Lawrence was 33 for 48 for 400 yards and three total touchdowns in what is expected to be the junior’s final college game. His final pass was intercepted, but Clemson (10-2) went 34-2 in his starts and won a national title when he was a freshman. The third meeting between Clemson and Ohio State in the playoff, and fourth bowl matchup since the 2013 season, was a game the Buckeyes had been pointing toward ever since a 29-23 loss to Tigers in the Fiesta Bowl last year. - AP College Football

  12/21/20 - Trey SermonrSr/2021, Ohio State, 6-0, 213 (DS#4 RB) + More +

From Archie Griffin to Eddie George, Ohio State has produced plenty of stellar running backs during its storied history. But none of them ever had quite as prolific a rushing performance as Trey Sermon delivered Saturday with the Buckeyes' playoff hopes on the line. Sermon's 331 yards rushing in a 22-10 Big Ten championship game triumph over Northwestern broke the single-game school record previously owned by George, who ran for 314 yards against Illinois in his Heisman Trophy-winning season of 1995. That 331-yard performance also was the highest rushing total for any conference championship game ever. - AP College Football

  12/19/20 - Trey SermonrSr/2021, Ohio State, 6-0, 213 (DS#4 RB) + More +

Trey Sermon ran for a school-record 331 yards and two second-half touchdowns Saturday, helping No. 3 Ohio State rally for a 22-10 victory over Northwestern for a fourth consecutive Big Ten championship. The Buckeyes (6-0) will find out Sunday if they've done enough to earn one of four spots in the College Football Playoff. It's the first time Ohio State has won four consecutive outright conference crowns. Northwestern (6-2) heads into the bowl season with two losses in its last three games and a second runner-up finish to the Buckeyes in three years. It was a struggle for Ohio State.

After the Buckeyes settled for a field goal on the game's first possession, Northwestern running back Cam Porter answered with a 9-yard TD run late in the first quarter. The Buckeyes trailed from that moment until Sermon's 9-yard run with 2:41 left in the third priod. The Buckeyes had trailed for all of 5 minutes, 5 seconds this season - until they fell behind for nearly 32 minutes Saturday. Ohio State added a 26-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter, and Sermon, who had 29 carries, sealed the win with a 3-yard scoring run with 4:03 to go. Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields was 12 of 27 with 114 yards and ran 12 times for 35 yards. - AP College Football
