2023 BIG TEN BUTKUS-FITZGERALD LINEBACKER OF THE YEAR: Tommy Eichenberg, Ohio State,...Eichenberg is the first Buckeye defender to earn the top linebacker award in the Big Ten. It has been presented only since 2011. Eichenberg leads Ohio State in tackles for the second consecutive year with 80. He also leads with 40 solo stops and has 2.5 TFLs and four QB pressures. - Ohio State Football

The Buckeyes might lay claim to the Big Ten's best linebacking group with the return of Tommy Eichenberg and Steele Chambers. The starting tandem smothered ball carriers throughout this past season, one of the biggest areas of improvement for a defense that had been gashed often in the previous year before Jim Knowles took over as defensive coordinator to rebuild that side of the ball. In a conference filled with run-heavy offenses, they remain well-positioned to bottle up most backs.

Expect Eichenberg, who was among the most productive tacklers in the Football Bowl Subdivision, to be among the preseason favorites for the Butkus Award as the nation's top linebacker and possibly the biggest star for Ohio State on defense since Chase Young lined up on the edge in 2019. His presence should further help with continuity and leadership as the Buckeyes transition into the second year of Knowles' system. - Columbus Dispatch

Linebacker Tommy Eichenberg is returning to Ohio State for a fifth season, an announcement that marks a significant boost for the Buckeyes' defense. "After a lot of consideration and thought, I've decided to return for a final season at Ohio State," Eichenberg wrote in a post on Instagram on Thursday. "Back to work. Go Bucks."

As a breakout star last fall, Eichenberg was the centerpiece of the improvement the Buckeyes showed on that side of the ball in their first season under defensive coordinator Jim Knowles. He made 120 tackles, a total that ranked among the most of all players within the Football Bowl Subdivision. In the Big Ten, only Iowa's Jack Campbell, who was the recipient of the Butkus Award as the nation's top linebacker, finished with more tackles. - The Columbus Dispatch

In the aftermath of the loss in the Peach Bowl, Tommy Eichenberg said he remained undecided about his future. His stock took a significant leap after breaking out in Jim Knowles' defense, showing great instincts to swarm ballcarriers. His 120 tackles were the most by an Ohio State player since 2014. But Eichenberg was only a junior in eligibility this past fall, allowing him to return as a redshirt senior if his draft grade isn't to his liking. A return would be a major lift to the defense. - Columbus Dispatch

Coaches love Tommy Eichenberg. Yes, his teammates are fond of him as well. But coaches really love Eichenberg, whose advanced football intelligence and attention to detail seemed to give him an edge during Jim Knowles' defensive install in the spring. A Rose Bowl defensive MVP performance featuring 17 tackles helped his case. Eichenberg could be the run-stopping linchpin needed in a defense that will spread more safety help around him to help defend the pass. On the other hand, Eichenberg opened last season as the starter but soon yielded the job to Cody Simon after three games. The latter was still on the mend from shoulder surgery and did not participate in spring practices. As such, Knowles has not seen much from him in person. If that changes in preseason camp, this may again be a two-man competition up until opening night. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

They call it the Bar House - seven Ohio State football players and a couple of dogs packed into one living arrangement. Thanks to those confined quarters, Steele Chambers has a more conversational relationship with his fellow linebacker Tommy Eichenberg. "He's an oddball, but I love the dude," Chambers said. "I've been roommates with him for two years. I'm around him all the time, so we talk a lot." To the rest of the world, Eichenberg is a man of few words and many tackles. His 7.5 tackles led all players in Saturday's Spring Game. He and Chambers lined up as the starters with the first-string defense - no surprise considering the consistent reviews from the coaching staff all spring. "I'm very impressed with Tommy Eichenberg," Ryan Day said in his last press conference before the Spring Game. "I think he's really had a really good spring. Playing fast, really decisive." - Cleveland Plain Dealer
