  11/30/19 - Peyton RamseyrSr/2021, Northwestern, 6-2, 215 (DS#15 QB) + More +

Peyton Ramsey threw three touchdown passes and scored on a 1-yard run in the second overtime Saturday to give the Indiana Hoosiers a 44-41 victory at Purdue. The Hoosiers (8-4, 5-4 Big Ten) reclaimed the Old Oaken Bucket after losing two straight in their biggest rivalry. Purdue (4-8, 3-6) rallied from a 28-10 deficit late in the third quarter but only led once — when J.D. Dellinger started the second overtime with a 34-yard field goal to give the Boilermakers a 41-38 lead. But after throwing a 14-yard completion to Peyton Hendershot on third-and-10, Ramsey hurried the Hoosiers to the line of scrimmaged, snapped the ball quickly and kept it himself as his offensive linemen helped push him around the right side and into the end zone.

Teammates mobbed Ramsey, a two-year starter who lost the job in August, following the score. Ramsey finished 23 of 39 with 337 yards and no interceptions, running 19 times for 42 yards while scoring twice. Purdue quarterback Aidan O'Connell forced overtime with a 20-yard TD pass to David Bell and then hooking up with Brycen Hopkins on a 2-point conversion to tie the score with 2:48 left in regulation. O'Connell tied it again at 38 with a 6-yard TD pass to Hopkins on fourth-and-goal to end the first overtime. O'Connell was 28 of 49 for 408 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. - AP College Football

  11/30/19 - Andrew MartyrSr/2022, Northwestern, 6-2, 224 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Andrew Marty ran for 111 yards and two touchdowns while passing for another and Northwestern upset Illinois 29-10 on Saturday. It was the first Big Ten win for Northwestern (3-9, 1-8). Illinois - 21-point favorites going into the game - finished the regular season 6-6 and 4-5 in the conference. Illinois is bowl-bound despite the loss and will learn its destination on Dec. 8. Marty made his first career start for the Wildcats after replacing Hunter Johnson during last week's game. Marty was the first Northwestern quarterback since Clayton Thorason in 2015 to gain at least 100 yards rushing in a game. Perhaps the biggest surprise for Northwestern was true freshman and former cornerback Coco Azema, who led the way on the ground for the Wildcats with 123 rushing yards and two scores on just seven carries. Illinois quarterback Matt Robinson, a sophomore starting in place of Brandon Peters (out with a concussion) was 8-of-17 passing for 108 yards. - AP College Football

Evan Hull had four rushing touchdowns, Chris Bergin added an 85-yard touchdown return on a blocked field goal, and Northwestern snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 45-6 victory over UMass on Saturday. Hull, a freshman, had 220 yards rushing on 24 carries (an average of 9.2 yards) in his first significant action this season. He had a total of 15 yards and eight carries (an average of 1.9 yards) before Saturday. Northwestern (2-8) last won on Sept. 14 with a 30-14 victory over UNLV. Quarterback Randall West was 19 of 36 for 175 yards and Bilal Ally had 66 yards rushing on 16 carries for UMass (1-10), which has dropped five straight.

UMass led 3-0 at the end of the first quarter and had a chance to expand the lead on the first play of the second quarter. However, Cooper Garcia's 30-yard field-goal attempt was blocked by Joe Gaziano and Bergin picked up the ball at the 15 and returned it 85 yards for the game-turning touchdown. After Garcia connected on a 23-yard field goal, Hull had a 6-yard TD run for a 14-6 lead with 7:59 left in the first half. Less than three minutes later, Hull had a 38-yard TD run to cap a 95-yard drive to make it 21-6. Hull had three rushes on the series for a total of 90 yards. Charlie Kuhbander hit a 31-yard field goal in the third - following an interception by Blake Gallagher - to make it 24-6. Hull had a 46-yard TD early in the fourth for a 31-6 advantage and added a 31-yard TD a few minutes later to make it 38-6. Northwestern's final score was an 11-yard TD run by Raymond Niro after Hull left the game. - AP College Football

Indiana players started celebrating before the clock struck zeroes, and as they headed to the locker room they continued to whoop and holler. "We're going bowling," they yelled. Yes, they are. It's not even November, and the Hoosiers have achieved the six wins needed to play in a bowl for the first time since 2016. Leading the way in Saturday's 38-31 win over Nebraska was Peyton Ramsey, the starting quarterback for two years before getting beat out in the preseason. Starting for the third time this season in place of the injured Michael Penix Jr., Ramsey passed for a career-high 351 yards and two touchdowns.

"Being so far from home, being our first time here at Nebraska, it was awesome," Ramsey said. "It was a fun deal and we're going to celebrate it." The Hoosiers certainly did. "You should have seen us in the locker room after the game," said Whop Philyor, who caught 14 passes for 178 yards. "We were going crazy. It was chaos." The Hoosiers (6-2, 3-2 Big Ten) won a third straight conference game in the same season for the first time since 1993 and won in Lincoln for the first time since 1959. "It feels pretty stinking good to stand here and answer your questions after a big-time road win," Allen told reporters. "This is a big-time win. It changes a lot for our program." Nebraska (4-4, 2-3) lost its second straight, and second-year coach Scott Frost lamented two turnovers that were converted into touchdowns, breakdowns in pass defense, a missed field goal and poor punt that gave Indiana a short field for a scoring drive. - Indiana/AP College Football

  10/19/19 - Peyton RamseyrSr/2021, Northwestern, 6-2, 215 (DS#15 QB) + More +

After losing his job to a freshman, Peyton Ramsey never abandoned the work ethic that enabled him to start 12 games at quarterback for Indiana last year. Ramsey's willingness to be ready at a moment's notice paid off handsomely Saturday for the gritty junior, who threw for 193 yards and a touchdown in a relief role to help the Hoosiers beat Maryland 34-28. Ramsey took over for injured Michael Penix Jr. with 12 minutes left in the second quarter and Indiana ahead 14-7. Showing no small measure of poise, Ramsey exuded calm in the huddle and finesse while running the offense. "I'm just so proud of Patrick Ramsey," coach Tom Allen said. "What an absolutely awesome young man. He was ready to play when called upon. It's been tough on him, but he's the ultimate team player. He proved his value to his teammates today."

Coming off a season in which he threw for 2,875 yards and 19 touchdowns, Ramsey was displaced as the starter by Penix, a redshirt freshman with a dynamic left arm. Instead of moping or seeking a transfer, Ramsey stayed on as a backup and made the best of the situation. "You take a lot of pride in being the guy, so be able to accept that, a lot of guys can't," Allen said. "He chose to stay for this football team. Not just stay, but be prepared every week." Ramsey may not be done as a starter. Allen would not describe any aspect of the injury to Penix except to say, "I'm not sure what next week holds, but I don't think it's a long term thing." It may not matter, because Ramsey looked good behind center after a short period of adjustment. He got a field goal out of his first drive and threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Nick Westbrook before halftime for a 24-21 lead. - Indiana/AP College Football

South Carolina made it through with further injuries to its quarterback corps.   Peyton Ramsey threw three touchdown passes and linebacker Cam Jones returned an interception for his first career touchdown Saturday as Indiana rolled past Connecticut 38-3. The Hoosiers (3-1, 0-1 Big Ten) have won 17 of their last 18 nonconference games including all three this season - this one coming a week after a 41-point loss to No. 6 Ohio State. UConn (1-2) lost its 18th consecutive game against a Football Bowl Subdivision foe and it wasn't even close. After the Huskies recovered a fumble on the third play of the game and took a 3-0 lead on a 41-yard field goal everything fell apart. Ramsey immediately answered by leading the Hoosiers on a 75-yard drive that ended with a 12-yard TD pass to Whop Philyor. The Hoosiers made it 10-3 on a 27-yard field goal and took a 17-3 lead late in the first half when Ramsey hooked up with tight end Peyton Hendershot on a 12-yard TD pass.

Not much changed in the second half. When Huskies quarterback Jeff Zergiotis tried to avoid a sack by flipping the ball away left-handed, Jones snatched it out of the air and returned it 44 yards to give the Hoosiers a 24-3 lead. Ramsey made it 31-3 with a 16-yard TD pass to Nick Westbrook for a 31-3 lead late in the third and exited after Stevie Scott closed out the scoring on a 6-yard TD run with 8:47 left. Ramsey was 23 of 27 with 247 yards and one interception. Scott had 21 carries for 97 yards. - Indiana/AP College Football

  09/07/19 - Ryan HilinskirSr/2025, Northwestern, 6-3, 225 (DS#45 QB) + More +

South Carolina fans gave quarterback Ryan Hilinski even more love than a second string QB typically gets in his first start and the freshman with the inspiring backstory responded with a storybook debut. Hilinski completed 24 of 30 passes for 282 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score leading the Gamecocks (1-1) to a 72-10 win over Charleston Southern on Saturday. The highly touted Hilinski earned the backup job in spring practice after enrolling early from high school and was elevated to starter after senior Jake Bentley broke his foot in the last play of the opening loss to North Carolina. Bentley is out for at least several weeks.

While South Carolina was recruiting Hilinski, his older brother Tyler Hilinski killed himself while playing quarterback for Washington State. The school promised to do whatever it could to help his family and their Hilinski's Hope foundation in Tyler's honor to help make the mental health of college athletes as important as their physical health. The crowd chanted "Let's go Ryan!" during his first two drives. Hilinski's parents were in the stands and his mother, Kym, said during an in-game interview with the SEC Network that she caught herself cheering for Tyler as her younger son took the field for South Carolina. - AP College Football
