The status of Auburn's season opener - the date, the location and the opponent - is now up in the air. The SWAC on Monday announced a decision to postpone all scheduled fall sports, including football, amid the coronavirus pandemic following a vote by the conference's presidents and chancellors. The SWAC plans to play a seven-game conference schedule in the spring, but that means Auburn's scheduled season opener against Alcorn State is off the 2020 schedule.

Auburn was set to play Alcorn State on Sept. 5 at Jordan-Hare Stadium, with the Tigers paying the Braves $475,000 for the game, according to a copy of the game contract obtained by AL.com through an open records request. That amount was due by March 1, 2021. Although the game will not be played this season, a force majeure clause in the contract between the two programs could require the two sides to use "all reasonable efforts" to reschedule the contest for a future date. Since the SWAC will not be playing football this fall, the earliest possible date for rescheduling is 2023, as Auburn's non-conference schedule is completely set through 2022. - Birmingham News

On July 10, Kei'Trel Clark announced his commitment to Louisville after transferring from Liberty. The biggest question surrounding Clark, a 5-foot-10 corner back, isn't his talent, it's when he'll be eligible to play. On paper, the sophomore with three years of eligibility looks like a strong secondary addition for the Cardinals. In his freshman year, Clark had 38 tackles, three tackles for a loss, one sack and six pass breakups. He started 13 games for Liberty. "We are excited to get him. We think he's a great player and a hard worker and is going to fit our culture great," Scott Satterfield said.

He transferred from Liberty because of a decision that he said was "Bigger than football," adding that the culture in multiple levels of leadership did not line up with his code of ethics. In this tweet, he said that the football program was a "blessing to my life." Now the question remains - will that be enough for the NCAA? Clark will have to sit out unless he files a waiver with the NCAA, and it is approved. Satterfield said he doesn't have an idea of which way the NCAA will rule. "I hope he gets it for his sake," Satterfield said. - Courier Journal

Former Liberty defensive back Kei'Trel Clark appears to have found a new home. Clark, who announced a few weeks ago alongside Liberty teammate Tayvion Land he would be transferring, cited he was transferring "due to the cultural incompetent within multiple levels of leadership, it does not line up with my code of ethics." Earlier this week, Land announced his transfer to Norfolk State. Clark is a rising sophomore who was a part of Coach Freezeā€™s first recruiting class at Liberty. He developed into a starter at corner as a true freshman in 2019, playing in all 13 games while recording 38 tackles, 3 TFLs, 1 sack, 6 PBUs, and 1 blocked kick. - ASeaofRed.com

Jamon Brown used to think his purpose in life was to play football. The former Louisville offensive lineman, who now plays in the NFL for the Atlanta Falcons, realized he could do more with his platform as he matured. He wanted to impact people in need. Since starting the Jamon Brown Foundation his second year in the NFL, he's worked to give back to his hometown of Louisville. One of the biggest causes he's been part of is helping to stop youth and young adult homelessness. But when he returned to Louisville this spring, he had a few more things on his agenda. The COVID-19 pandemic became a focus as he organized a coronavirus relief fund. Then on March 13, Breonna Taylor, 26, was fatally shot by police serving a no-knock search warrant at her apartment.

Since then he's become a fixture in Louisville. He's been to countless protests, with his first one being early on. He's led Louisville football players to clean up the morning after protests and passed out Kroger gift cards in partnership with Louisville Scoop to help families in need. Brown went to Fern Creek High School and embraces being part of the community. It's why he hasn't been shy about using his platform to better the not only his city, but whoever else he can reach. When Brown first heard of Taylor's death, he was hurt. "First off I was thinking about what if that was my sister. I would want answers," Brown said. - Courier Journal

Mississippi's coaches and athletics directors aren't the only folks trying to make political change happen this week. The players are getting involved too. Ole Miss football players are hosting a rally on Saturday, beginning at 3 p.m. on The Square. The rally is called LOUnited, attempting to unite Lafayette County, the City of Oxford and the University of Mississippi under the common goal of making the area inclusive and welcoming for all people.

Linebacker MoMo Sanogo and defensive end Ryder Anderson, led the organizing efforts. Sanogo told the Clarion Ledger that the march is an attempt to bring an end to systematic racism and police brutality and has the goal of convincing lawmakers to relocate the Confederate monument located on The Square in downtown Oxford. "Really the message is about unity and unifying Mississippi," Sanogo said. "The statue is very divisive in nature. The flag is very divisive in nature. We just want to create a place that we can all bring our kids back to and be proud and not have to explain why that statue is there. We want to be proud of every aspect of the community where everybody can take the same amount of pride in it." - The Clarion Ledger

A virtual version of Za'Darius Smith is seen rushing a passer during the reveal trailer for "Madden 21." The trailer for "Madden 21," the latest entry in Electronic Arts' popular NFL video game series, dropped Tuesday, and former standouts who made names for themselves in Kentucky were front and center. Lamar Jackson, the reigning league MVP, is this year's box-art cover athlete and his character is featured prominently throughout the trailer. The former Louisville Cardinal last year threw for 3,217 yards and 36 touchdowns and rushed for 1,206 yards and seven scores. He led the Baltimore Ravens to a 14-2 record in the regular season. - Herald Leader

Georgia Southern has hired Chris Davis as its new deputy director of athletics, a GS spokesperson confirmed to the Savannah Morning News on Sunday morning, June 14. Davis comes to GS after spending the last 11 years at Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama, most recently serving as the Vice President and General Manager of Auburn Sports Properties. In this role, Davis worked to grow corporate partnership revenue. "My family and I love living in Auburn and being a member of the Auburn family," Davis said in a tweet Saturday night. "The loveliest Village has given us tons of love, smiles, care and in some tough times a bunch of support." The University of Miami graduate will replace Lisa Sweany, who held the deputy AD role since 2017 following NCAA Division I Georgia Southern's merger with Armstrong State in Savannah. Sweany was athletic director for the Division II Pirates program for six years. - Savannah Morning News

Should the best-case scenario come to pass, the University of Louisville football season could start ahead of schedule. U of L athletic director Vince Tyra is exploring the possibility of moving up the Cardinals' Sept. 3 opener against NC State to avoid a potential conflict with Churchill Downs' popular "Thurby" card, which last year attracted a record crowd of 48,212. "We're trying to sort out whether we can pull that (game) off Thursday night or whether we should be playing Wednesday night," Tyra said during a videoconference Wednesday night with U of L fans and donors."...It's a spectacular week. It's just an odd time of year." Cardinal Stadium's proximity to the racetrack makes it a significant source of parking for Churchill's peak crowds each spring. But with Kentucky Derby week pushed back to September because of COVID-19, a football game overlapping with a race day could result in clogged parking lots, congested traffic and overstretched city services. - Courier Journal

C.J. Avery has been writing down his goals since he was in high school. Back in November 2014, he had a list of seven, which included to sign and play Division I football. In August 2015, he had a similar list and included being named all-state. That's a practice he continues. On the ceiling of his Louisville apartment, the Grenada, Mississippi native has a list of goals he looks at every day. On it are to be an All-American and an All-ACC honoree and reach the NFL. Those haven't been accomplished, yet, but a week and a half ago, he checked a different one off: "Graduate college in three years."

The night of April 29, Avery, who is back home in Mississippi currently, finished his last class of undergrad. A sense of accomplishment came over him as he stood up from the table and asked his mother, Claudette Avery, "Can I just scream right now?" "It wasn't relief because I'll keep doing school, but it felt good knowing I completed something that a lot of people haven't done," Avery said. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he won't have a graduation ceremony, but that doesn't take away from his accomplishment. Avery is now the first four-year college graduate in his household, graduating with a degree in sports administration. - Courier Journal

Atwell has the highest ceiling of any Louisville draft-eligible prospect simply because of his breakaway speed. Use Ravens wide receiver Marquise "Hollywood" Brown as an example. Brown, a speedy receiver who ran a 4.32 40-yard, was drafted No. 25 overall and was the first wide receiver off the board in the 2019 NFL draft. Atwell has that same level of speed and is coming off a 1,000-yard season.

This could be a big year for Atwell's draft prospects. He's already shown his ability to be used as a vertical threat, jet sweep speedster and reverse quarterback, but if he can build off last year's success and show that he is a well-rounded receiver, he could make a big splash in the draft. He's undersized at 5-foot-9 and 169 pounds, but with another year of production, don't be surprised if an NFL team grabs him early. - Courier Journal
