Fitzpatrick thought about entering the 2020 draft, but he ultimately decided to return to Louisville for his senior season. Though Atwell makes many of the headlines, Fitzpatrick is the most complete offensive weapon on the team. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound receiver has strong hands, is a good route runner and has underrated speed. His focus this season is on catching every pass that comes his way, he said. Wide receivers coach Gunter Brewer said he thought if Fitzpatrick had left for the 2020 draft, he would have been a mid-round pick. Next year's wide receivers class could be loaded, highlighted by LSU's Ja'Marr Chase, but Fitzpatrick should hear his name called at some point next April. He has 1,756 career yards and 18 touchdowns in three years. - Courier Journal

Three years and done. That was Mekhi Becton's plan when he left Highland Springs, Virginia, for the University of Louisville. He accomplished that goal on Thursday. The former Louisville left tackle was drafted No. 11 in Thursday's NFL draft by the New York Jets, becoming one of the highest picked players in program history. He is the highest offensive lineman drafted in Louisville history and just the third offensive lineman taken in the first round. Once Becton fell to the 11th pick, he said he had a good idea that the Jets were going to take him. In a draft that was highlighted by a top-heavy offensive tackle class, Becton was the third tackle off the board. All four of the top tackles were taken in the top 15. "We are so excited to add a guy with his size and athletic ability and a guy we really feel can fortify our front for a long time," Jets general manager Joe Douglas said.

Although Becton always dreamed of walking across the stage at the NFL draft, he couldn't because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The NFL draft moved virtual, so he spent the evening with his parents, Semone and Jerome, his girlfriend, former U of L women's basketball player Bionca Dunham, and a few other family members. "I can't express how happy I am for Mekhi and his family to be a first-round selection," head coach Scott Satterfield said. "There aren't many people that are that big that can move the way he does, and he has such a bright future. He really answered a lot of questions on the way he played this year, and to his credit, he put all the work in to be one the best in the country. He's just scratching the surface with his potential and he has the opportunity to be an outstanding tackle in the NFL for a long time." - Courier Journal

The Jets have selected offensive tackle Mekhi Becton of Louisville with their first pick, No. 11 overall, of the 2020 NFL Draft tonight. The pick was the first made by Joe Douglas as the Jets' general manager and an NFL GM since taking over the Green & White's GM office last June and the first made virtually by Douglas and his player personnel team due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. And it quickly addressed one of Douglas' stated goals for QB Sam Darnold, to "do everything in my power to take care of Sam, with protection and playmakers." Becton, at 6'7" and 364 pounds, is one of the biggest protectors available in this year's draft. He played in 35 games with 33 starts in his three seasons with the Cardinals, with the last 21 starts coming at LT. He received All-ACC first-team recognition after last season. - NewYorkJets.com

Just a week before the NFL Draft, former Louisville left tackle Mekhi Becton had a drug test flagged at the February NFL Combine, according to the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Becton, a 6-foot-7, 364-pound lineman, did not fail a drug test during his time at Louisville, but he was among other players who had a test flagged at the combine, according to Rapoport. "Multiple players had drug tests flagged at the NFL Combine & among those is projected top 10 pick #Louisville OT Mekhi Becton, I'm told," he tweeted.

According to reports, teams have been informed of Becton's drug test. Becton will now enter "Stage 1" of the league's intervention program for no more than 60 days, according to the new NFL collective bargaining agreement. In stage one, a medical director may require a player to submit to testing for substances of abuse as often as is required to evaluate the player adequately. If he's not flagged again within those 60 days, he would assume the same status as a player who has never been referred to the program. The Becton family did not immediately return a message seeking comment. - Courier Journal

Rising before dawn to work out, running stadium steps without a coach's insistence, determined to turn his potential into paydays, Jared Goldwire is a noseguard transformed. "A different human being," said Bryan Brown, the University of Louisville's defensive coordinator. "... A different animal." A talented player with newfound purpose. A noseguard to the grindstone, if you will. After averaging slightly more than 22 snaps per game last fall as G.G. Robinson's backup, Goldwire became the breakthrough performer of U of L's abbreviated spring practice. Coaches observed the fifth-year senior expending more effort on the practice field and devoting more time to football film study.

They saw indifference replaced by dedication. They saw a part-time contributor suddenly courting stardom. "I don't have an exact answer why he wasn't the dominant force he could have been last year," said Mark Ivey, U of L's defensive line coach. "But no doubt, he could have and should have. In the future, he's a guy who can be one of the best in the conference if he chooses to. I think he can be one of the best in the country, but that will be determined over a long period of time." - Courier Journal

Oregon's starting QB job was largely seen as Tyler Shough's to lose - and perhaps it still is. Shough, the backup to Justin Herbert last season, has been the presumptive favorite to take over the role in 2020. But Wednesday's commitment of graduate transfer Anthony Brown at least creates significant competition prior to the season, whenever it begins. Oregon coach Mario Cristobal, who in December said there was there was going to be an "open competition" this offseason, said Shough did well in the Ducks' four spring practices and is the starter as of today. "We think Tyler Shough did an outstanding job in the spring," Cristobal said during a conference call Friday. "He entered the spring as the starter; he leaves the spring as the starter. "We can't comment on any players that are not currently enrolled.

Like every single position on that field we're always going to present competition because it helps our players get better. But I can't emphasize enough how fired up we are about Tyler." Shough went 12 for 15 for 144 yards with three touchdowns and had two carries for 11 yards this season. He worked extensively with the first-team offense during spring practice while walk-on Bradley Yaffe and redshirt-freshman Cale Millen took most of the second-team reps and true freshman Jay Butterfield work with the third-team offense and rotated some with the second-team. - The Oregonian

Louisville had three open scholarships in the 2020 class once signing day finished and hoped to land a grad transfer with one of those spots. It accomplished that goal. Cam DeGeorge, an offensive tackle from the University of Connecticut, has committed to Louisville as a grad transfer. DeGeorge, a 6-foot-4, 290-pound tackle, started the last three years at UConn and gives the Cardinals some added depth on the offensive line. The Lynnfield, Massachusets native is the sixth offensive lineman in the class which includes: Trevor Reid, Kobe Baynes, Luke Kandra, Timoty Lawson and Austin Collins. - Courier Journal

Lamar Jackson brought the University of Louisville its first and only Heisman Trophy, and now Cardinal fans get to relive that historic season - in bobblehead form. Friday morning, the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum unveiled the officially licensed, limited edition bobblehead that features the Heisman pose Lamar Jackson once did in his Cardinal uniform. These bobbleheads are being produced by FOCO, an official licensee and manufacturer of Louisville Cardinals and NCAA merchandise. The museum says there is also a 3-foot-tall bobblehead of Jackson in the works with expected delivery in July. "Lamar's bobbleheads have been among the most popular we've had over the past year and we kept getting requests for a Louisville bobblehead," National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum co-founder and CEO Phil Sklar said. "We think this bobblehead of Lamar in the Heisman pose turned out great and will be a fan favorite for Lamar's fans in Louisville, Baltimore and across the country." The bobblehead, of which 2,020 are being produced, is available for pre-order through the company's online store. - Courier Journal

It would have been understandable if Kentucky quarterback Terry Wilson had been hesitant about helping his coaches when Vince Marrow came searching for a player to host a high-profile recruit. Wilson was rehabbing his way back from a left knee injury that ended his 2019 season after just two games. The recruit was Auburn quarterback transfer Joey Gatewood, who was hoping to gain a waiver from the NCAA to play immediately for his new school in 2020. If Kentucky landed Gatewood and the waiver was granted, Wilson might be helping to woo the player who could take his starting job.

"Each recruit that we get, it's with open arms," Wilson said Saturday in his first interview with local reporters since the injury. "... He's a great player. He's big, he can throw the ball. Anything I can do to get the players that we need for this football team, this university, I'm all in for it." Gatewood eventually committed to Kentucky and enrolled at UK for the spring semester.   After Louisville's Music City Bowl win, receiver Dez Fitzpatrick had a decision to make. Did he want to chase his dream by entering the NFL draft, or return to school for his final year? On the surface, Fitzpatrick has all the tools to be an interesting NFL prospect. He's a 6-foot-2 receiver with good hands, runs a high-end 4.3 40-yard dash, is a strong route runner and has a good eye for the ball in the air. But there was more to the decision for the Farmington, Michigan native. Louisville had momentum going into offseason and high expectations for this year. Fitzpatrick's brother, freshman Christian Fitzpatrick, was set to join the team and Dez Fitzpatrick promised his mother he would get his degree, which he's set to receive in May.

Having conversations with his family, wide receivers coach Gunter Brewer and head coach Scott Satterfield, Fitzpatrick thought about every scenario. A week and a half after the bowl game, he decided to return to Louisville for his senior year. He has unfinished business, both on and off the field. "This is where I committed," Fitzpatrick said. "I wanted to win an ACC championship, I wanted to win a national championship. Leaving without that, I just felt like I came to do something." - Courier Journal

The Ducks, coming off a 12-2 finish with a Pac-12 championship and final ranking of No. 5 in the Associated Press poll, begin spring practice on Thursday with an eye on the 2020 season. "Regardless of how good or bad you've done the previous year, you always want to improve," Cristobal noted at a signing day news conference last month. A look at five storylines to follow leading in to the April 18 spring game: Justin Herbert's eventful four-season stint as Oregon's starting quarterback spanned three head coaches, a 4-8 finish and his memorable touchdown runs for the Rose Bowl trophy.

Four candidates will compete to replace the NFL-bound Herbert, who finished his collegiate career with 10,541 yards passing, 95 touchdowns and 23 interceptions. Redshirt sophomore Tyler Shough is the favorite after serving as Herbert's backup in 2019. "It's obviously been great to learn from him and all these coaches and my teammates," Shough said leading into the Ducks' 28-27 win over Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl. "I just prepare myself for each game. That's been my goal is just to stay ready and get better." - Register Guard

The big guys made a big statement at the NFL scouting combine Friday night. Wisconsin star Jonathan Taylor ran the fastest 40-yard dash (4.39 seconds) despite weighing in as the third-heaviest running back at the combine, and the offensive linemen had a solid showing, led by Louisville's 357-pound Mekhi Becton, who ran a 5.10 time in the 40. Raiders general manager Mike Mayock said on the NFL Network that he was more impressed with Becton's 5.10 than he was with Alabama wide receiver Henry Ruggs III, who ran a blazing 40-yard day in 4.27 on Thursday night that was just shy of John Ross's record of 4.22 set in 2017.

"Rich, you love the 4.22. Who's going to beat the 4.22?" Mayock told former colleague Rich Eisen during a visit to the broadcast booth. "I believe him running the 5.51 is more impressive than what the wideout from Alabama, Ruggs, ran yesterday." Other O-linemen who impressed during the first Friday night live workouts at Lucas Oil Stadium were Iowa's Tristan Wirfs, who topped them all at 4.85 seconds in the 40 and dominated the position drills and other tests. - AP College Football

Micale Cunningham threw for 279 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 81 more, and Louisville capped coach Scott Satterfield's debut season by beating Mississippi State 38-28 Monday in the Music City Bowl. The Cardinals (8-5) rallied from a 14-point deficit by scoring 31 straight to finish their big turnaround from 2-10 last season. Louisville also finally beat Mississippi State on the field for the first time in six tries, though the series now is tied 3-3 thanks to a pair of forfeits by the Bulldogs in the 1970s. "We got down 14 points early in the game, and the kids didn't flinch," Satterfield said. "I mean they kept playing, they kept battling. The next thing you know you're right back in the game. We grabbed the momentum and poured it on."

Mississippi State (6-7) had been trying to finish the season with a three-game winning streak for the first time since 2013 and only the third time since the end of World War II. Instead, the Bulldogs go home having lost a bowl game in each of coach Joe Moorhead's two seasons. "This season was a book in and of itself," Moorhead said. "Certainly 6-7 was not the outcome we desired. To get bowl eligible, win an Egg Bowl and have this opportunity to play in a bowl game to me is a credit to these seniors, a credit to these staff and credit to these leaders that we were able to battle through a lot of adversity this season." The Cardinals had four sacks and recovered two fumbles, one returned 31 yards for a TD by safety Khane Pass. Javian Hawkins led Louisville with 105 yards rushing, and he ran for a TD late.   Javian Hawkins is the big reason why the Cardinals rank 23rd nationally averaging 214.1 yards rushing per game. He set a freshman school record running for 1,420 yards as the Cardinals' first 1,000-yard back since Bilal Powell (1,405) in 2010. Hawkins has six 100-yard rushing games this season, including 233 yards in a win over Syracuse, and already is being mentioned as a Heisman Trophy candidate for 2020. "He's had a special year, no question about it, particularly for a freshman a really special year," Satterfield said. "Overall, I'm praying for just any running back to have a special year, and we've leaned on that." - AP College Football
