 Shai Werts, Louisville, Player News

  07/05/21 - WR Shai WertsrSr/2022, Louisville, 5-11, 205 (DS#999 WR) + More +

A newcomer to the Cardinals, Werts spent the offseason switching from quarterback to wide receiver. The Georgia Southern transfer has drawn rave reviews from his teammates and coaches throughout both spring practices and summer workouts. Louisville is looking for new playmakers on the outside and the 5-foot-11 receiver has the potential to be one of them for the Cardinals. He's a good athlete, as proven by his time at Georgia Southern. Werts ran for more than 3,000 career yards at quarterback with 34 touchdowns. With his combination of size, athleticism and IQ that coach Gunter Brewer raves about, there's reason to be optimistic for Werts making a quick transition. Werts will likely start the year coming off the bench, with Jordan Watkins, Braden Smith and Justin Marshall the frontrunners to start, but if he continues his strong offseason play he'll be in the rotation. - Courier Journal

  03/18/21 - WR Shai WertsrSr/2022, Louisville, 5-11, 205 (DS#999 WR) + More +

Former Georgia Southern quarterback Shai Werts decided at the end of his fourth year of starting in Statesboro that it was time for change. Werts knew that if he was to have a better chance at a job in the NFL, he needed to switch positions. The Louisville Cardinals sat at the ready to pluck him from the transfer portal, led by wide receivers coach Gunter Brewer, who had been waiting to coach Werts since 2016, when Brewer was in the same position at North Carolina. "I had the pleasure of recruiting him at North Carolina, along with a lot of other Power Five and ACC schools that wanted him to play receiver at that time," Brewer said. "He wanted to live the dream playing quarterback, and I don't blame him, went to a place that really fit him well."

Brewer was full of praise for Werts' work ethic and knowledge of the game, saying he was a great fit for the Cardinals. Werts made good as a quarterback at GS, guiding the Eagles to three bowl games and earning MVP awards in the 2018 Camellia Bowl victory against Eastern Michigan and in the 2020 New Orleans Bowl win over Louisiana Tech. Werts finished his GS career with 3,777 yards passing, 3,083 rushing and 68 total touchdowns in the Eagles' run-first option offense. - Savannah Morning News

Georgia Southern quarterback Shai Werts, the starter the past four seasons including as the Most Valuable Player of the New Orleans Bowl in the 2020 season finale, announced on his Twitter account on Thursday that he is entering the transfer portal. Werts was shown on social media after this season working out as a wide receiver with a personal coach. Werts, a 5-foot-11, 205-pound redshirt senior from Clinton, S.C., wrote that he will use the extra year of eligibility the NCAA granted because of the coronavirus pandemic to play a fifth season in sixth years of college instead of declaring for the NFL draft.

Werts is the Sun Belt Conference's all-time leader among quarterbacks for rushing yards and is tied as Georgia Southern's career leader in touchdown passes. He was an honorable mention selection in each season that he played (2017-20) and SBC Academic Honor Roll for 2016-17 through 2018-19. - Savannah Morning News

Shai Werts said the last 10 days have been the most trying of his entire life. Given what he's gone through prior, that's saying something. "It's been difficult," Werts said after a team scrimmage Saturday, Aug. 10, at Paulson Stadium in discussing his July 31 arrest on charges of misdemeanor possession of cocaine and speeding in Saluda County, South Carolina. "I stayed down and I knew that the truth was eventually going to come out. Just didn't know how long it would take. It's definitely been hard to deal with."

The truth - the substance found on the hood of Werts' car that night in Saluda County which tested positive for cocaine on the scene - was actually not cocaine. In fact, it wasn't a controlled substance of any kind, according to the Aug. 8 test results from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED). "SLED received the substance and completed the drug analysis," read the official report from The Eleventh Circuit Solicitor's Office. "The forensic scientist determined that no controlled substance was detected." - Savannah Morning News

Shai Werts, the starting quarterback for LSU's season opening opponent Georgia Southern, is back with the team after being suspended earlier in the week, according to Georgia TV station's report. WSAV-TV says Werts returned to practice on Saturday after submitting to, and passing, a drug test, but school officials say the two-year starter is still suspended for the opener against the Tigers until his case plays out, according to the Georgia Southern Student-Athlete Code of Conduct. Werts could possibly play if his misdemeanor charges are dropped, at which point it is up to the school's athletic director and school staff to determine disciplinary action. Werts was indefinitely suspended after being arrested and charged with speeding and misdemeanor possession of cocaine during a traffic stop in Saluda, South Carolina on Wednesday night. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Georgia Southern indefinitely suspended quarterback Shai Werts on Friday after it was discovered the two-year starter was arrested for cocaine possession. The Eagles open their season Aug. 31 at LSU. On Wednesday, Werts was pulled over by police in South Carolina for speeding when they noticed a white substance on his car, according to the police report. Werts reportedly told police the substance was bird poop but later tested positive for cocaine, according to The George-Anne, Georgia Southern's student newspaper.

Werts is the Eagles' expected starter heading into the season. He was named to the All-Sun Belt Conference Second Team in 2018, when he started in all 13 games for Georgia Southern, which went 10-3 with a 23-21 win over Eastern Michigan in the Camellia Bowl. Werts rushed for 908 yards and 15 touchdowns in Georgia Southern's option offense, and he passed for 987 yards and 10 touchdowns with no interceptions. Head coach Chad Lunsford also announced Friday defensive end Quan Griffin was suspended from a separate arrest. - Baton Rouge Advocate

A shock was delivered to Georgia Southern fans just minutes before the team officially opened fall football camp on Friday as head coach Chad Lunsford announced the arrests and subsequent suspensions of two Eagle players - most notably starting quarterback Shai Werts. "Shai was arrested Wednesday in Saluda, South Carolina," Lunsford said. "It is our understanding that he was charged with speeding and misdemeanor possession of cocaine after some residue was found on the hood of the car."

Werts came to Georgia Southern in 2016 and sat out his first season before winning the starting quarterback job as a redshirt freshman ahead of the 2017 season opener. He has started all but one game - missed due to injury in 2017 - since then and has become the leader of the Eagle offense. - Statesboro Herald
