The three cornerbacks who have been talked about the most are Clemson transfer Kyler McMichael, sophomore Storm Duck and senior Patrice Rene, who is working his way back from an anterior cruciate ligament injury. Duck has continually drawn high praise in August including Bateman declaring, "I think he's going to be an NFL football player." Along with Wolfolk at safety, Don Chapman is the leading contender to start against the Orange. The sophomore appeared in all 13 games last season, starting four thanks to the plethora of injuries the team had. - Raleigh News Observer

  09/03/20 - Cole BentleyrSr/2022, Louisville, 6-3, 310 (DS#28 C) + More +

Cole Bentley has received a lot of praise for his improvement this offseason. A former tight end in high school, Bentley is expected to be Louisville's starting center when the season begins on Sept. 12, barring any injury. Last year at this time, and through much of the season, he was in a battle with T.J. McCoy for the starting spot. But now it's all his, and he's taken full advantage of that. The center is one of the most important positions on the offense, because of how much the player has to know about the scheme, offensive coordinator Dwayne Ledford said. Ledford expects a strong season from Bentley, who is one of three returning starting interior linemen. "He's an athletic, big guy that can move. He can really do well with what we are asking him in this scheme," Ledford said. "I think he's primed to have a really, really big season." Bentley's offseason, like many others, was spent working on the conditioning plan strength coach Mike Sirignano gave the team. He also made a trip to Texas to improve the mental side of his game. - Courier Journal

  08/30/20 - Momo SanogorSr/2023, Louisville, 6-1, 231 (DS#22 ILB) + More +

The Ole Miss football team has joined in on the wave of activism that has spread across college and professional sports this week. Instead of their regularly scheduled practice on Friday morning, players marched and gathered on The Square in downtown Oxford in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. The players gathered in front of the monument on The Square that commemorates Confederate soldiers. Players were vocal about wanting to see the monument removed or relocated this summer.

"As the Ole Miss football family, we are committed to change," the players said in a statement passed along by the university. "Police brutality and other injustices occurring across our nation have to end, and our team stands united to embrace our diversity and promote a culture of peace, equality and understanding. Regardless of our backgrounds, we all need to listen to each other and learn to respect and love our differences." Ole Miss players MoMo Sanogo and Ryder Anderson organized a march in June in support of the Black Lives Matter movement in the wake of George Floyd's death. That march raised more than $3,000 of the Boys and Girls Club of Oxford. - The Clarion Ledger

  08/26/20 - Renato BrownrSr/2026, Louisville, 6-3, 315 (DS#999 OG) + More +

With the departure of Tyler Haycraft after the 2019 season, there was a hole that Louisville had to fill at right tackle. Renato Brown, a soon-to-be redshirt freshman, looked like a candidate to fill that position. The versatile offensive lineman from West Palm Beach, Florida, has played both guard and tackle for Louisville. When the season ended, offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Dwayne Ledford had a message for Brown. Ledford said, "If you want it, go get it," Brown recalled. And that's what he's done by all accounts. With less than three weeks left before the season, Brown is the projected starter at right tackle. He's been one of the most impressive players on the offense, not just the offensive line, Ledford said. "It's just how hard he is going now. It's like he's broken out of his shell and is letting loose and everybody," left guard Caleb Chandler said. "He's working his butt off and it's showing." - Courier Journal

  08/20/20 - KeiTrel ClarkrJr/2023, Louisville, 5-10, 181 (DS#18 CB) + More +

Louisville football got some good news after its Wednesday practice. Corner back Kei'Trel Clark has been ruled immediately eligible by the NCAA after transferring from Liberty this summer. Clark will have three years of eligibility left and will help the Cardinals' secondary right away. As a freshman at Liberty, Clark played in all 13 games, starting seven games, and finished with 38 tackles and six pass breakups. He ranked second in the secondary in tackles and pass breakups. He's already shown his athleticism during camp, and many have given rave reviews. The 5-foot-10, 165-pound Virginia native had a few interceptions early in fall camp. "He's a quick corner that loves competing and loves to be tight coverage," defensive coordinator Bryan Brown said. - Courier Journal

Jared Goldwire has been one of the most talked about defensive players in the Louisville offseason, but even he has to rave about Tabarius Peterson. Peterson, a redshirt-senior defensive end, has impressed just about everybody in the program this offseason. After starting every game last year and finishing the season with 24 tackles, 1.5 tackles for a loss, five quarterback hurries and one forced fumble, he's stepping into an even bigger role. As one of eight returning starters from last year, he's the most experienced player on the line and has been asked to be a bigger leader. He's passed that test so far.

"TP (Peterson) is a constant leader, plays hard and does the things you want him to do," Louisville defensive line coach Mark Ivey said. But on the field is where he'll also need to make a big impact. Louisville tallied 27 sacks last year, an improvement from 2018, but still just 12th in the ACC. Peterson spent his offseason working on his technique, working out every day and refusing to take days off even in quarantine, ready to make his final season his best. And the feeling around the program is that Peterson is poised to break out for Louisville. "He is playing much more explosive, and he just looks more determined. I think he'll have a great year this year. I'll be shocked if he doesn't," Ivey said. - Courier Journal

  08/19/20 - Jacques TurnerrSr/2022, Louisville, 6-1, 290 (DS#999 DT) + More +

Three of Southern Miss' most veteran football players are ending their time with the Golden Eagles prematurely. Senior defensive end Jacques Turner, senior linebacker Racheem Boothe and junior running back Steven Anderson have all opted out of the 2020 season and all three plan to enter the transfer portal as graduate transfers. According to the Sun Herald, wide receiver and kick returner Jaylond Adams has also opted out of the 2020 season although it is not clear if he is in the transfer portal.

Turner and Boothe are two of the most productive defensive players in recent Southern Miss history. Turner has logged 14.5 sacks and 30.5 tackles for loss across the last three seasons and was named first-team All-Conference USA in 2018. Boothe has been limited by injuries in the past two seasons but has still made 175 tackles with 22.5 tackles for loss since 2017. Anderson has rushed for nine touchdowns in the last two seasons. He was Southern Miss' third-leading rusher in 2019 and second-leading rusher in 2018. - Clarion Ledger

  08/18/20 - Joey GatewoodrSr/2024, Louisville, 6-4, 241 (DS#45 TE) + More +

Kentucky football opened preseason practice Tuesday, but coach Mark Stoops is still waiting to learn if a key transfer will be eligible to play this fall. UK finished filing the paperwork for former Auburn quarterback Joey Gatewood's application for a transfer waiver to allow him to play this fall earlier this summer, but the school has yet to hear back from the NCAA with a final ruling. "We expect an answer here relatively soon," Stoops said Tuesday before his team's first preseason practice. "I don't think it's appropriate to speculate on what I expect at this point in time."

The No. 49 recruit and No. 1 athlete in the 2018 high school class according to the 247Sports Composite, Gatewood lost the Auburn starting job to freshman Bo Nix, the No. 1-ranked quarterback in the 2019 class and son of Auburn legend Patrick Nix, last fall. He appeared in seven games as Nix's backup, completing 5 of 7 passes for 54 yards and two touchdowns and gaining 149 yards and three touchdowns on 29 carries, before deciding to transfer. Gatewood has not revealed specifics about his case for a transfer waiver but confirmed to reporters in February he hoped the NCAA would allow him to play this season. Since Gatewood already redshirted at Auburn in 2018, he would lose a year of eligibility if unable to play this fall. - Courier Journal

  08/14/20 - Yasir AbdullahrSr/2023, Louisville, 6-1, 237 (DS#9 OLB) + More +

Yasir Abdullah had a strong sophomore season, despite having to learn a new defense. He tallied 45 tackles, four for a loss, one sack and two fumble recoveries, but there was still room to improve. As he and co-defensive coordinator (and outside linebackers coach) Cort Dennison talked about ways Abdullah could improve, they discussed a variety of things. One of them was his weight. Entering last season Abdullah was listed at 218 pounds, and as the outside linebacker playing the "Dog" position for Louisville, he was undersized. The "Dog" linebacker is the one who is often a pass rusher on passing downs and sets the edge against opposing offensive tackles, too.

Abdullah will admit that he struggled to do that last year, so he went to work on his body. As the second week of fall camp nears its end, Abdullah is around 235 pounds. The added weight along with his instinct and athleticism has Dennison raving about Abdullah entering the season. "Yasir is one of the most athletic and fastest players on our football team," Dennison said before fall camp began. "Any time you get a guy that is 225 or 230 that can run like he can you can do things defensively and create mismatches." - Courier Journal

  08/01/20 - *Tutu AtwellJr/2021, Louisville, 5-09, 155 (DS#15 WR) + More +

Atwell might be one of the most influential receivers in the country, just because of his speed alone. The junior wide receiver said he ran a 4.27 40-yard dash last year, and when you watch him on the field, you can believe it. Last year, he tallied 1,272 yards, 12 touchdowns and 18.43 yards per reception. He ranked first in the ACC in yards, second in touchdowns and fourth in yards per reception. When Satterfield's offense was able to use its run game to set up the pass so well, Atwell fit perfectly in the scheme. They used him in jet sweeps and even let him throw a touchdown to Marshon Ford in the Music City Bowl. This year, Atwell might be an even bigger weapon. He'll be the focus of every defense that Louisville plays, although that still might not be enough, because he's just faster than everybody on the field. He eclipsed 100 yards seven times last year and five times in the last six games of the season, showing that it didn't matter if defenses had film on him. - Courier Journal
