West Virginia University football is on its way back to campus, and the university announced Friday the process necessary for that to happen. WVU will take a phased approach to bringing football players and staff back to campus for voluntary workouts. The first phase is a two-week period, June 8-22 for coaches and staff and June 15-29 for players. Student-athletes have been away from their campuses since the coronavirus pandemic began in March. Coaching staffs were eventually allowed to hold virtual meetings with their players during the week. The Big 12 announced recently that football players would be permitted to return June 15 for voluntary workouts.

"Phase 1 is the first step to getting Mountaineer football ready for the 2020 season," WVU Athletic Director Shane Lyons said in a university release. "This two-week phased approach enables us to safely get our football staff and players back to campus and will provide the guidance for the return of other student-athletes starting in July. "I want to thank our medical team and department staff who worked endless hours in putting together a plan that puts the safety of our football student-athletes, staff and University first." - Charleston Gazette-Mail

With several departures due to graduation from last year's 10-win squad, the defensive line is one of the biggest areas of immediate need in 2020 for Louisiana Tech. And help is on the way to Ruston, as former Texas senior defensive lineman Gerald Wilbon has committed to Tech, according to 247sports.com, which reports that the former Longhorn lent his verbal on May 14. He'll be immediately eligible to suit up for the Bulldogs this season. The addition of Wilbon marks the fifth transfer the Louisiana Tech coaching staff has pulled in for the 2020 recruiting class.

Tech signed Abilene Christian transfer quarterback Luke Anthony back on Signing Day, while it's landed former LSU guard Donavaughn Campbell, Virginia Tech safety Khalil Ladler and Tennessee receiver Jerrod Means, who'll have to sit out this year due to NCAA transfer rules, in three months since. Louisiana Tech welcomes back just two defensive linemen with significant playing time in ends Willie Baker and Milton Williams. The unit lost key pieces on the inside in senior defensive tackle Courtney Wallace, who signed an undrafted free agent deal with the New England Patriots following the 2020 NFL Draft, and senior Ka'Derrion Mason. Wilbon entered his name into the transfer portal Jan. 21. He maintained his final year of eligibility after playing in just three games during his senior campaign in 2019 in Austin. - Monroe News Star

Help is on the way for Louisiana Tech's depleted defensive backfield. Former Virginia Tech safety Khalil Ladler announced -- via his Twitter page Saturday -- his intention of joining the Bulldogs, posting he was "committed" with a Tech graphic. Ladler will finish out his collegiate football career in Ruston as a redshirt senior. The addition of Ladler, who's listed at 5-11, 190 pounds on Virginia Tech's football website, fills a much-needed void for the Louisiana Tech defense on the backend as it lost two safeties, including Kansas City Chief draftee L'Jarius Sneed, and both of its starting cornerbacks, where star Amik Robertson declared early for the NFL Draft after junior year this past season and was a fourth-round selection by the Las Vegas Raiders a little over a week go. - Monroe News Star

After his stellar performance at the NFL Combine back at the beginning of March, former Louisiana Tech defensive back L'Jarius Sneed was reportedly climbing up many NFL teams draft boards. That speculation was confirmed on Day 3 of the 2020 NFL Draft Saturday as the reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs picked Sneed as the 138th overall choice in the fourth round. Sneed, who's versatility was a big selling point for franchises for the former Tech standout as he has plenty of starts in his collegiate career at both cornerback and safety, raised eyebrows at the Combine, blazing a 4.37 40-yard dash along with a 41-inch vertical jump. "Size. Speed. Work ethic. Versatility. He has played two years at corner for us and two years at safety," Bulldogs head football coach Skip Holtz said of Sneed. "He has position flexibility. And when you look at NFL rosters and they only carry six defensive backs, that's a huge plus. He can play anywhere on the back end." - Monroe News Star

Amik Robertson, all 5-foot-9, 187 pounds of him, earnestly believes he was born different. And once the film of his simulated Pro Day that he worked through Wednesday down in Baton Rouge gets in the hands of all 32 NFL teams, he believes they'll think the same of him, too. "You can't get these hands out the store," Robertson joked to the News-Star following his Pro Day performance, where he said he caught every ball thrown his way. "With my hands and feet, I was just born different. "(NFL scouts) will definitely be saying that - I feel like they're already saying that about me. The way I play the game, my passion, my instincts and how I run, it's different. It's willing. I'm a guy that's willing to win and never lose. I hate to lose and it shows on my film. That makes me different."

Since the NFL Combine in Indianapolis four weeks ago, Robertson has steadily climbed up many NFL teams and analysts' draft board, projecting as high as a mid-second round draft choice. A scout in attendance said the cornerback's Pro Day might have raised his stock in the NFL Draft, set be held April 23-25. "What he ran, I think it's (a second-round number) or he could be higher, depending on what a team is looking for," the scout told The News-Star. "I think he helped himself. I could see him being taken in the second or third round. Teams looks for guys who fit what they do." - Monroe News Star

Current uncertain and unprecedented times in the sports world call for unconventional methods. When college football Pro Days all around the country - including at Louisiana Tech - started getting canceled due to the growing health threat of COVID-19, or coronavirus, former LA Tech star Amik Robertson and his agent, Marlon Moore from MVA Sports, put their heads together to come up with an unusual plan. "We plan to record my drills and we'll record my 40-yard dash off the laser," Robertson told the News-Star Wednesday afternoon. "Then we're going to send it to all 32 teams to let them now that I haven't missed a step and I can still move the same."

Just more than a month from being fully cleared to resume complete workouts after surgery on Jan. 17 to repair a torn groin muscle, Robertson said they'll more than likely wait at least a couple of weeks before filming what would've been his Pro Day workout and getting it out into the right hands for each NFL team. It's not traditional, but for Robertson, a guy that's a projected third- to fifth-round draft choice where many recent mock drafts have the 5-foot-9, 190-pound cornerback being taken, it's a potential means to elevate his stock ahead of the NFL Draft. "As far as being safe, the world hasn't really seen anything like this. Since I've been living on this planet, I haven't face any adversity this complicated. This is new to everybody," Robertson said. "So we had to adjust from the traditional way. My agent came up with a gameplan and hopefully it works." - Monroe News Star
