  09/05/20 - Brandon CouncilrSr/2023, Auburn, 6-3, 302 (DS#53 OG) + More +

The two players who have received the most reps on either side of Brahms at guard this fall have been grad transfer Brandon Council on the left side and redshirt junior Tashawn Manning. Council, who arrived this summer after starting 24 consecutive games (when healthy) at Akron over the last three seasons, has been lauded for his versatility this fall, with the ability to play anywhere along the line, as well as the experience he brings to the position - which is something the rest of Auburn's linemen, Brahms excluded, lack at the college level. "What impresses me the most with him, though, is his versatility," Brahms said. "He can transfer his skills to tackle, guard. It's pretty impressive to watch. He's really quick. I think that's what really makes the difference with him. And getting off the ball. I think that's a key for offensive linemen, getting off the ball, really, before the defense sets. If you can time it up before even the center starts to snap the ball, that's perfect, and I think he does a good job of that. So, I think that's really why he can play all five positions because he's so good."

Versatile grad transfer Brandon Council "feels like he has something to prove" While Council has shown flexibility in being able to move to any position on the offensive line, he has emerged as the favorite at left guard, where offensive tackle Alec Jackson has been the one primarily working behind him. Manning, meanwhile, has stepped up at right guard, where he has been competing with redshirt freshman Keiondre Jones for the starting job. - Birmingham News

  09/03/20 - Eugene AsanterSr/2025, Auburn, 6-1, 223 (DS#13 OLB) + More +

If North Carolina sophomore linebacker Eugene Asante ends up playing like Chazz Surratt did last season, it won't be a coincidence. Asante said as soon as the team got its new software for viewing game clips, he studied every single play from Surratt's performances against Georgia Tech, Duke and Temple. "I watched everything he was doing, his movements, the way he takes on blockers, the way he sheds blockers, the way he blitzes and covers," Asante said during a Zoom call with reporters. "I analyzed it and I took little notes." Asante primarily appeared on special teams last season. He'll likely see a lot of snaps this season, albeit in a backup role to Surratt, and he feels much better prepared to take on a larger role. He felt it was imperative he get mental reps in before the team began practicing again in the summer.

Asante said he spent a lot time studying the game, often quizzing coaches and also his teammates. "That was one thing I struggled with the cerebral part of football," Asante said. "I felt like I had the athletic ability but the cerebral part wasn't always there. The speed of the game changed." He feels very much up to speed now. The confidence the coaches have in playing him could allow a new wrinkle for Surratt. UNC coach Mack Brown mentioned the way Asante has looked in practice, Surratt could move to the outside when needed in specific situations to help conjure up a better pass rush. "Eugene had a big scrimmage this last one," junior Tomon Fox said on the call. "He made every play that came to him - even plays that were away from him." - Raleigh News Observer

  08/30/20 - Owen PappoeSr/2023, Auburn, 6-0, 225 (DS#5 ILB) + More +

Owen Pappoe had his eye on the No. 0 long before the NCAA approved the change to make it an eligible jersey number back in April. It's actually something Pappoe has wanted since well before he stepped foot on the Plains. "I was trying to get it in high school, but it was the same as college; it wasn't an eligible number," Pappoe said. "So, when I heard they were going to pass it, I told Coach, 'Hey, Coach, I want to one of the first guys to get dibs.'" Pappoe, who wore No. 10 as a freshman last season, heard rumors about a looming change in the legality of the No. 0 months before the NCAA voted on the change. It was back in December or January, he said, that he first became aware of the possibility and approached his coaches about it.

According to Pappoe, Auburn's coaches had not heard about the possibility of that change yet-but assured him that if it happened, he would get the opportunity to change jersey numbers Then in February, the NCAA Football Rules Committee recommended the change to allow players to wear No. 0 in response to the popularity of single-digit numbers. Two months later, in April, the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved of the new rule, opening up an opportunity for hundreds of players across the country to rock the peculiar jersey number. - Birmingham News

  08/28/20 - Brandon CouncilrSr/2023, Auburn, 6-3, 302 (DS#53 OG) + More +

Council showed some of that potential as a true freshman in 2016, but Akron redshirted the former two-star prospect - as colleges often do with offensive linemen, which is often the most difficult position to evaluate from the high school to college level. "He continued to stay hungry," Ekkens said. "...He wanted to play that first year, but he trained hard, and after that, it was like as soon as he got in, as soon as he got an opportunity, we couldn't get him off the field. He was a guy that was going to play, and he just stay committed to it in the weight room, cleaned his body up from going from a guy that was at prep school, came into a weight program and quickly adapted, and then on the field, nothing was too big for him."

That was in the MAC, but after appearing in 25 games at Akron - with 24 consecutive starts in contests in which he was healthy - Council wanted to prove the same in the SEC. He entered the transfer portal in mid-February before announcing in April that he would be transferring to Auburn, where Gus Malzahn was looking to add a grad transfer in the trenches. "He just has a commitment to doing things the right way," Ekkens said. "He's worked really hard to get where he's at, and I'm definitely proud of him for working himself into this opportunity. He's a competitive guy, and he had his options of where he could go, and he wanted to go somewhere that he could compete at the highest level." He's getting his chance to do that at Auburn this fall. It's just a matter of whether he'll earn a spot in that starting five when the season opener rolls around in a month. - Birmingham News

  08/27/20 - *Tank BigsbyJr/2023, Auburn, 6-0, 215 (DS#8 RB) + More +

Auburn updated its offensive arsenal this offseason with the addition of offensive coordinator Chad Morris, as well as a variety of new weapons for sophomore quarterback Bo Nix. Yet it is the Tigers' new Tank that seems to have fans most excited heading into the 2020, as freshman running back Tank Bigsby has generated the most buzz and anticipation since before he even stepped foot on campus. The former four-star recruit, who signed with Auburn during the early signing period last December and enrolled in classes in January, is one of the highest-rated prospects in program history and has a chance to see the field immediately in a retooled backfield that must replace the Tigers' leading rusher from a year ago.

"He's a one-play drive type of guy," Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said on signing day. "I mean, from anywhere on the field he can take it to the house. He's got receiver-type skills with his hands. Very excited about Tank. We think he's an impact player. We think he could help us immediately." Since arriving on campus in January, Bigsby has done nothing to make Auburn question that belief, either. "Tank Bigsby is a good worker, and that's the exciting part about it," Auburn strength and conditioning coach Ryan Russell said in April. "He's a talented kid, obviously, but a good worker. (He) loves the game. This game is a lifestyle to him; it's not just a game. He's all about it." - Birmingham News

A third Auburn player has opted out of the 2021 season. Josh Marsh, a redshirt sophomore linebacker, has decided to opt out of the upcoming season, he announced on Twitter. Marsh joins fellow linebacker Chandler Wooten and defensive back Traivon Leonard as Auburn players who have chosen to sit out the season amid health and safety concerns due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A source told AL.com that Marsh informed Gus Malzahn and the team of his choice on Friday before making his announcement. Marsh revealed in his announcement that he contracted the coronavirus and is still experiencing complications from the disease. - Birmingham News

  08/20/20 - Smoke MondayrSr/2022, Auburn, 6-2, 207 (DS#7 FS) + More +

When Noah Igbinoghene declared for the draft, the only starter in the secondary who could return as a senior disappeared from the 2020 roster, leaving a quartet of rising juniors as the most experienced defensive backs on the team. Luckily for Auburn, Jamien Sherwood, Roger McCreary, Christian Tutt and Smoke Monday each played in all 13 games of 2019 and have experience to draw on. They combined for 131 tackles, two sacks and four interceptions. Sherwood and Monday also played in all 13 games of their freshmen seasons, while McCreary gained seven games of experience and Tutt appeared in 11 games.

"We were put in the fire real fast," Monday said. "So I feel like it's better for us to be the leaders we are today and we can lead the defense in a really good way this year." With safeties Jeremiah Dinson and Daniel Thomas and cornerbacks Javaris Davis and Igbinoghene gone, Monday said he's had to step up "in a big way." "I know a lot of the young guys are depending on me to be a leader and show them the way," Monday said. Others are moving into those vacated leadership roles, too. Sherwood is a lot quieter and doesn't say much, Monday said, but he's become a leader through his actions. Despite his lack of words, he has the ability to get the team's energy up. - Birmingham News

Chandler Wooten has become the first Auburn player to opt out of the 2020 season amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Wooten, a senior linebacker who is set to become a first-time father in the next couple of months, announced his decision on Twitter on Thursday afternoon. Wooten will redshirt this season and plans to return in 2021 as a fifth-year senior. Although Wooten was not a starter in the linebacker corps last season, he appeared in all 13 games and finished the year with 27 tackles. He has appeared in 30 games over the last three seasons, totaling 45 tackles, an interception, a fumble return and a pass breakup. - AL.com

  08/03/20 - Kassidy WoodsrSr/2024, Auburn, 6-2, 211 (DS#239 WR) + More +

For the past few months, wide receiver Kassidy Woods has contemplated whether to suit up for Washington State's football team this fall as the coronavirus pandemic raged through his home state of Texas and much of the West Coast, where he'd be playing the majority of his games in the Pacific-12 Conference. When Woods was a freshman, athletic trainers discovered he possessed the sickle cell trait - something that could cause complications if Woods was ever exposed to COVID-19, or contracted the virus himself.

The redshirt sophomore maintains the Pac-12 hasn't done enough to address health and safety concerns since inviting players back to campus for voluntary workouts, and worries he'll be compromised when the Cougars travel to play games outside of Pullman. "Because I do have sickle cell trait, and with this COVID it affects the respiratory system, so I just wasn't comfortable playing at all," Woods told The Spokesman-Review on Sunday. "And I haven't heard any plans ensuring we'd be safe." - The Spokesman-Review

  07/28/20 - Nick CurtisrSo/2023, Auburn, 6-4, 208 (DS#999 OLB) + More +

A former three-star linebacker from the MAC and Hoover grad is making his way to the Plains. Nick Curtis, who spent his freshman season at Kent State in 2019, announced his plans to transfer to Auburn on Sunday night. Curtis made his decision public via Twitter. "Thank you Kent State for the opportunity to play football at the next level, but I will be transferring to Auburn University. #WarEagle," Curtis posted in a note on Twitter. After graduating from Hoover in 2019, Curtis appeared in just one game for Kent State last season, seeing the field during the team's game at Wisconsin. The 6-foot-5, 205-pounder did not record a stat for Kent State. Curtis was rated as a three-star prospect out of high school, according to 247Sports. - Birmingham News
