"He just has a commitment to doing things the right way," Ekkens said. "He's worked really hard to get where he's at, and I'm definitely proud of him for working himself into this opportunity. Auburn updated its offensive arsenal this offseason with the addition of offensive coordinator Chad Morris, as well as a variety of new weapons for sophomore quarterback Bo Nix. Yet it is the Tigers' new Tank that seems to have fans most excited heading into the 2020, as freshman running back Tank Bigsby has generated the most buzz and anticipation since before he even stepped foot on campus. The former four-star recruit, who signed with Auburn during the early signing period last December and enrolled in classes in January, is one of the highest-rated prospects in program history and has a chance to see the field immediately in a retooled backfield that must replace the Tigers' leading rusher from a year ago.

"He's a one-play drive type of guy," Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said on signing day. "I mean, from anywhere on the field he can take it to the house. He's got receiver-type skills with his hands. Very excited about Tank. We think he's an impact player. We think he could help us immediately." Since arriving on campus in January, Bigsby has done nothing to make Auburn question that belief, either. "Tank Bigsby is a good worker, and that's the exciting part about it," Auburn strength and conditioning coach Ryan Russell said in April. "He's a talented kid, obviously, but a good worker. Marsh joins fellow linebacker Chandler Wooten and defensive back Traivon Leonard as Auburn players who have chosen to sit out the season amid health and safety concerns due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A source told AL.com that Marsh informed Gus Malzahn and the team of his choice on Friday before making his announcement. When Noah Igbinoghene declared for the draft, the only starter in the secondary who could return as a senior disappeared from the 2020 roster, leaving a quartet of rising juniors as the most experienced defensive backs on the team. Luckily for Auburn, Jamien Sherwood, Roger McCreary, Christian Tutt and Smoke Monday each played in all 13 games of 2019 and have experience to draw on. They combined for 131 tackles, two sacks and four interceptions. Sherwood and Monday also played in all 13 games of their freshmen seasons, while McCreary gained seven games of experience and Tutt appeared in 11 games.

"We were put in the fire real fast," Monday said. "So I feel like it's better for us to be the leaders we are today and we can lead the defense in a really good way this year." With safeties Jeremiah Dinson and Daniel Thomas and cornerbacks Javaris Davis and Igbinoghene gone, Monday said he's had to step up "in a big way." "I know a lot of the young guys are depending on me to be a leader and show them the way," Monday said. Others are moving into those vacated leadership roles, too. Sherwood is a lot quieter and doesn't say much, Monday said, but he's become a leader through his actions. For the past few months, wide receiver Kassidy Woods has contemplated whether to suit up for Washington State's football team this fall as the coronavirus pandemic raged through his home state of Texas and much of the West Coast, where he'd be playing the majority of his games in the Pacific-12 Conference. When Woods was a freshman, athletic trainers discovered he possessed the sickle cell trait - something that could cause complications if Woods was ever exposed to COVID-19, or contracted the virus himself.

The redshirt sophomore maintains the Pac-12 hasn't done enough to address health and safety concerns since inviting players back to campus for voluntary workouts, and worries he'll be compromised when the Cougars travel to play games outside of Pullman. "Because I do have sickle cell trait, and with this COVID it affects the respiratory system, so I just wasn't comfortable playing at all," Woods told The Spokesman-Review on Sunday.
