Jamien Sherwood didn't run as fast as he had hoped at Auburn's pro day earlier this month. The former Auburn safety clocked in an unofficial 40-yard dash time of 4.75 seconds-a full two-tenths of a second slower than he was aiming for while training for the draft at Brandon Marshall's House of Athlete facility in South Florida. He said he stumbled slightly on his first attempt at pro day, but his second one was somewhat better. Either way, Sherwood isn't too concerned with how fast he ran in front of personnel from 30 of the NFL's 32 teams on March 18. After all, 40 times may grab attention, but they aren't the end all, be all for prospects. "It says a lot, but it doesn't say everything," Sherwood said. "...My motto is, 'how do you stop speed? You hit it.' You can run a 4.1, but once you run into a wall, it comes to an end."

"Most teams just told me that they just wanted to see me move, wanted to see me run and actually get a feel for me," Sherwood said. "They saw what I could do on the field and stuff like that. Most teams weren't sure if I would be a box safety or a backside linebacker. But today (at pro day), I feel like I put on a good show, especially when we got to the drill parts. I feel like I answered any questions that they didn't have answered yet. Me, personally, I can do both of them (safety and LB). And the way that I moved today, I feel like they can think the same." - Birmingham News

Another standout Auburn player is taking his talents to the next level. Auburn safety Jamien Sherwood announced Saturday he is forgoing his eligibility and entering the 2021 NFL Draft. The news comes after Sherwood played well at safety during his junior season despite battling through injury and helped the Auburn pass defense throughout 2020. Sherwood faced the challenge of replacing the production of departed Auburn safeties Daniel Thomas and Jeremiah Dinson and did so quickly. He played in all 11 games for the Tigers in 2020 and ended the year with 75 total tackles, three tackles for loss, three pass break-ups, one sack, one quarterback hurry and one fumble return. - Opelika-Auburn News

Auburn is expected to be without at least three key players when it faces Northwestern in the Citrus Bowl on Friday. Safety Jamien Sherwood, wide receiver Anthony Schwartz and defensive back Christian Tutt are all expected to opt out of the game and haven't taken part in the team's first three bowl practices, sources told AL.com. Sherwood, who is third on the team with 65 tackles, is expected to enter the NFL draft, per sources. AL.com's sources weren't 100 percent sure as of Tuesday evening whether Schwartz and Tutt will enter the draft. - Birmingham News

The bye week came at the right time for Auburn safety Jamien Sherwood. The junior injured his ankle during the first half of Auburn's 48-11 win against LSU on Saturday and did not return to the game. Sherwood went to the locker room after exiting the game, and when he returned to the sideline in the second half he was wearing a walking boot on his right foot and moving around with the help of crutches. The severity of Sherwood's ankle injury is unclear, though Auburn coach Gus Malzahn didn't want to rule out the safety for Auburn's next game -- a Nov. 14 trip to Starkville, Miss., to take on Mississippi State after this weekend's off week.

"I don't know if he'd be able to play if we had to play this week, but there is a chance for next week," Malzahn said. "So, we're hoping that he'll heal up and be ready. Obviously he's one of our impact players on our team." Sherwood has started all six games at safety for Auburn this season and is the Tigers' third-leading tackler with 43 on the year, including two for a loss. He also has a pair of pass breakups, a fumble recovery and a quarterback hurry this season. Sherwood has been dealing with lingering ankle issues all season, according to Malzahn, and he re-tweaked his right ankle early on during the win against LSU. - Birmingham News

Auburn entered the fourth quarter Saturday with a lead just looking for the knockout punch. Thanks to a one-two shot from safety Jamien Sherwood and receiver Seth Williams, Auburn found it and fended off a game Kentucky team. Sherwood recovered a fumble on a pivotal third-down play early in the fourth and Williams reeled in a six-yard touchdown pass - his second of the afternoon - to fuel Auburn's 29-13 victory over Kentucky. Williams' touchdown, followed by Eli Stove's 21-yard reception later in the fourth, closed a 21-7 second-half scoring run for Auburn that left the Wildcats in the dust. The Tigers were clinging to a 15-13 lead over the Wildcats with just under 13 minutes left when Kentucky quarterback Terry Wilson took off running on third-and-5. Wilson, who had been cool, calm and collected for most of the afternoon, tried to juke out an Auburn defender but took a hit from Sherwood and lost the football. Sherwood recovered the ball on the Kentucky 30-yard line, setting the stage for Williams and company to put the game away. "I'm not really sure if I knocked it out. I know I was the one coming up on the tackle and then the next thing you know the ball was on the ground. I went and got it," Sherwood said. "My fumble recovery killed them. That last one we got at the end of the game was the final one. It just killed everything. Even though they were down two scores, that touchdown right there just shut the game out." - Opelika-Auburn News
