Seth Williams doesn't think he's ever been as wide open as Anthony Schwartz was on that 54-yard touchdown catch. When he was first asked about it, Williams immediately shook his head 'no' emphatically. After further consideration the Auburn wide receiver said he might have been that open once - but never on that deep of a throw. Schwartz has now done it twice in two games. The catch, which was made in the second quarter against Tennessee, sparked the offense, but it wasn't actually the original play call. Tennessee made a mistake, and Schwartz took advantage. Williams wasn't quite sure what Tennessee was doing on that play.

"Like, they - just to leave him open like that?" Williams said. "I don't know what they was thinking. I don't know what they was thinking with that one." Schwartz, who is Auburn's second-leading receiver behind Williams, has already proved just how dangerous he can be if defensive backs give him even an inch. "You got to keep the top on the coverage at all times because he liable to burn you deep at any moment," Williams said. - Birmingham News

A trio of Auburn offensive starters are questionable for the Iron Bowl after sustaining injuries during the Tigers' 30-17 win against Tennessee. Running back Tank Bigsby, right tackle Brodarious Hamm and left tackle Alec Jackson all left Saturday's win against the Vols with various injuries, the extent of which were not disclosed by head coach Gus Malzahn. Auburn's eighth-year coach did, however, say that all three are currently "questionable" for next weekend's trip to Tuscaloosa to take on top-ranked Alabama. "All three of those guys couldn't really finish the game," Malzahn said. "All three of them, at this point, I'll say will be questionable. That's probably the best way to put it. We'll see as the week goes on as they progress." No. 22 Auburn (5-2) will face No. 1 Alabama (7-0) at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Bryant-Denny Stadium, with the game airing on CBS. Although Auburn topped Tennessee on Saturday night, the Tigers suffered a few significant setbacks along the way. The Tigers had some key players leave the victory over the Volunteers early due to injury, including true freshman running back Tank Bigsby along with junior right tackle Brodarious Hamm. Their status going forward will be crucial points of interest for Auburn with the Tigers' Iron Bowl matchup with Alabama coming next Saturday. Bigsby suffered an apparent hip injury early in the first quarter of the Tigers' game with Tennessee and wound up being limited the rest of the game.

After starting the game with a pair of carries, Bigsby only had one more carry in the second quarter before exiting the game for good. Bigsby ended the night with three carries for 24 yards. Malzahn explained during the postgame interviews he wasn't sure what Bigsby's status was going into the Iron Bowl week. "I think he tried to come back in for one play and he had to go back out. We'll have to see," Malzahn said. "We had a few injuries that took people out of the game, so we'll have to see where we're at here in just a little bit." - Opelika-Auburn News

Auburn true freshman running back Tank Bigsby has been nothing short of impressive since his first start in his second college football game. As a result, Bigsby's name has earned recognition for one of the nation's top awards. Bigsby is one of several college football players who were added to the Maxwell Award watch list, the Maxwell Football Club announced Wednesday. The award has been given annually to the outstanding collegiate football player in America since 1937; LSU quarterback Joe Burrow taking home the trophy in 2019.

The 6-foot, 204-pound Bigsby arrived in Auburn as a four-star recruit and wasted little time in proving he was well worth the hype. He started in Auburn's second game against Georgia and has not looked back since, rushing for 503 yards and five touchdowns while also reeling 11 receptions for 84 yards. He's also shown himself to be a dangerous return man, taking 13 returns for 306 yards and having a would-be touchdown against Ole Miss that was taken off the board due to a penalty. Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn spoke highly of Bigsby's play after the Tigers' 48-11 victory over LSU, a game in which Bigsby led the way with 15 carries for 71 yards and two touchdowns. - Opelika-Auburn News

Smoke Monday returned an interception 100 yards for a touchdown and No. 23 Auburn overcame a slow start to beat Tennessee 30-17 on Saturday night. Auburn (5-2, 5-2 Southeastern Conference) fell behind 10-0 to Tennessee (2-5, 2-5) and dealt with injuries to star running back Tank Bigsby and its two starting offensive tackles. The Tigers were playing their first game in 21 days after a scheduled off week and the postponement of a game at Mississippi State. Bo Nix completed 17 of 26 passes for 220 yards, with a 54-yard touchdown to Anthony Schwartz and his first career interception in a home game. Tennessee's Jarrett Guarantano started strong, but finished with only 156 yards of passing and the interception return for a touchdown that gave Auburn a two-score lead late in the third quarter. Tennessee had its best offensive outing in weeks, yet struggled after halftime. Regardless of where he has lined up, though, Wooden has gotten the job done. Through the Tigers' six games, he has recorded 29 tackles, with seven for a loss - including 1.5 sacks - and three quarterback hurries. His seven stops behind the line of scrimmage not only lead the SEC this season, but they're the most by an Auburn freshman - true or redshirt - in a single season since Carl Lawson had 7.5 in 2013. Lawson reached that mark over 14 games, while Wooden has done it in just six, with at least four remaining on the schedule this season. Wooden's 1.17 tackles for loss per game, so far, are the most by any Auburn player since Dee Ford finished with 1.21 per contest in 2013. "Colby's a great player," sophomore edge-rusher Derick Hall said. "… We knew coming into this year that he had a great opportunity to help us, but like you said, he's the best guy in the SEC-in the country, in my opinion-to get tackles for loss, and just being that key guy to help us contribute as a D-line unit. K.J. Britt plans to head to Mobile in January. The Auburn senior linebacker and team captain formally accepted an invitation to the Senior Bowl on Thursday, the Senior Bowl announced on Twitter. Britt is the first senior in this year's class for Auburn to accept an invitation to the game, which is held annually in Mobile each January. Britt has appeared in only two games this season for Auburn, as he has been sidelined since undergoing surgery on his thumb on Oct. 9. In his two games against Kentucky and Georgia, Britt totaled 23 tackles, including one for a loss. The 6-foot, 243-pound linebacker out of Oxford is expected to return late this season, though no target return date has been given by Auburn coach Gus Malzahn. For his career, Britt has recorded 119 tackles in 42 games. Last season he earned first-team All-SEC honors after totaling 69 tackles. - Birmingham News

McCreary came into the season as a dependable cornerback, but he quickly established himself as one of the best in the league. In addition to his 26 tackles, he has two interceptions, three pass breakups and a forced fumble. He's under a lot of pressure, Steele said, but he's taken it upon himself to study and make himself into a smarter player. He understands his own job as well as how offenses try and attack. "So he's kind of taken it to the next level in that regard, and with that his confidence is very, very high," Steele said. "And so when you've got a skill set like he's got and you have high confidence, then you tend to play pretty well." - Birmingham News

Malzahn heaped praise on junior left tackle Alec Jackson, who was tasked with slowing down LSU's B.J. Ojulari. Ojulari was coming off a tremendous showing against South Carolina in which he had four tackles and a career-best three sacks, which netted him SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week honors. Against Jackson, however, Ojulari was a non-factor, ultimately ending the game with three tackles while the Auburn offense put up six touchdowns. Malzahn said Jackson did a god job of handling the LSU pass rush on third down and excelled in blocking for Auburn's running backs. He added that Jackson looks more and more confident and that his understanding of offensive line coach Jack Bicknell Jr.'s expectations is growing.

Jackson had his struggles to start the year as he rotated in and out at left tackle with fellow junior Austin Troxell. Saturday's performance showed just how far he has come as a key piece on the line. "It means a lot. In the beginning of the season, we struggled a little bit. But as time's gone on, we're getting better and better each game," said Jackson, whose play earned him a helmet sticker from Malzahn on Sunday night. "I think we grew a lot since the Georgia game, every single week. We've got a bye week coming up, so we'll get some guys rested up and ready." Jackson's play was pivotal in protecting Nix's blindside against the Bayou Bengals, but he was just one piece of the puzzle up front for the Tigers. After winning the starting job, Simpson won SEC freshman of the week and then had to sit out the next two games because of injury. Helped by Hall and his four tackles, Auburn's defense held LSU to just 11 points, its lowest score since 2018. LSU also only rushed for 32 yards, which was also its worst rushing performance since 2018. The 32 rushing yards were the fewest by an SEC opponent since Arkansas rushed for 25 yards in 2016. Hall ended the day with four tackles, two tackles for loss, two sacks and a forced fumble. It was his best career performance. After the game, Hall also earned Auburn's defensive helmet sticker, along with the rest of the defensive line. "We've harassed the quarterback better than we've done the entire year," coach Gus Malzahn said. "So they really took a step forward." LSU coach Ed Orgeron also made a comment about Auburn's defensive line play. He knew they were good, but he didn't know quite how good. "Well, you know, you asked me why we couldn't run the ball?" Hall said. "We tried. We couldn't block those guys. I saw other people block their fronts. I really was surprised we couldn't block them. I thought we could run the football." - Birmingham News

The bye week came at the right time for Auburn safety Jamien Sherwood. The junior injured his ankle during the first half of Auburn's 48-11 win against LSU on Saturday and did not return to the game. Sherwood went to the locker room after exiting the game, and when he returned to the sideline in the second half he was wearing a walking boot on his right foot and moving around with the help of crutches. The severity of Sherwood's ankle injury is unclear, though Auburn coach Gus Malzahn didn't want to rule out the safety for Auburn's next game -- a Nov. 14 trip to Starkville, Miss., to take on Mississippi State after this weekend's off week.

"I don't know if he'd be able to play if we had to play this week, but there is a chance for next week," Malzahn said. "So, we're hoping that he'll heal up and be ready. Obviously he's one of our impact players on our team." Sherwood has started all six games at safety for Auburn this season and is the Tigers' third-leading tackler with 43 on the year, including two for a loss. He also has a pair of pass breakups, a fumble recovery and a quarterback hurry this season. Sherwood has been dealing with lingering ankle issues all season, according to Malzahn, and he re-tweaked his right ankle early on during the win against LSU. - Birmingham News
