  03/11/21 - Zakoby McClainSr/2022, Auburn, 6-0, 227 (DS#17 OLB) + More +

Auburn's linebacker group entered last season expecting to be among the SEC's best, and despite the preseason opt-out of Chandler Wooten and an early-season injury to team captain K.J. Britt, the linebacker corps did not disappoint. That was largely due to the play of Zakoby McClain and Owen Pappoe - and it's why this group should again be among the league's bet at the position. McClain stepped up in a major way as a junior after making a name for himself in the 2019 Iron Bowl. He slid into the starting spot vacated by Britt and proceeded to lead the SEC and tie for the FBS lead in tackles, with 113. "Ricochet Rabbit," as he's known, somehow didn't earn All-SEC honors last fall - leaving a chip on his shoulder heading into his senior season. - Birmingham News

Four former Auburn players have been invited to participate in this year's NFL Combine, which is taking on a different format this year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Wide receivers Seth Williams and Anthony Schwartz, safety Jamien Sherwood and linebacker K.J. Britt were among the 323 prospects invited to participate in this year's annual scouting event, the NFL announced Wednesday. Schwartz previously announced his invite on social media last month. Williams led Auburn in receiving yards each of the last two seasons, including 760 and four touchdowns on 47 receptions as a junior last fall before declaring early for the draft. - Birmingham News

  02/04/21 - Eku LeotaSr/2023, Auburn, 6-3, 263 (DS#32 DE) + More +

While Eku Leota did not play in the Citrus Bowl, he was on the roster of the team that most recently beat Auburn, the Northwestern Wildcats. Leota played eight games in 2020 and while he made just 13 tackles, he recorded four sacks and was named to the All-Big Ten third team. In his two seasons as a Wildcat, he recorded 6.5 sacks. The 6-foot-4, 250-pound defensive end announced Saturday that he planned to graduate transfer to Auburn. Leota is originally from North Carolina. He played just two seasons at Northwestern, one of which does not count against his eligibility. "A graduate transfer here but a guy that's all about the fit, the culture and things that we talked about here, his development, being part of this program and wanting to be here," Harsin said. "It was good to get to know him and his family. We're looking forward to him being a guy on the edge for us that can provide that pass-rush. He's a very good player, developed, will have his degree and has three years to come in here and be a part of this program." - Birmingham News

Auburn is turning to the transfer portal to bulk up its defensive line. Former Northwestern defensive end Eku Leota committed to Auburn on Saturday. The 6-foot-4, 250-pound Leota just completed his sophomore season with the Wildcats. Leota appeared in eight games for Northwestern in 2020 and racked up 13 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, four quarterback hurries and one forced fumble. Leota contributed to a Northwestern defense that ranked fifth in the nation by only allowing 15.9 points during a season in which the Wildcats went 7-2. - Opelika-Auburn News

  02/01/21 - Traivon LeonardSr/2022, Auburn, 6-0, 214 (DS#999 CB) + More +

Auburn's secondary is getting reinforcements in the form of a familiar face who missed the 2020 season. Defensive back Traivon Leonard, who opted out last season following a bout of COVID-19, announced on Sunday night he plans to return to the team this year. Leonard is the second defensive player to return to the team after opting out last fall, joining linebacker Chandler Wooten. Leonard, who will be classified as a senior, previously opted out last August after revealing he was diagnosed with COVID-19 last July, making the decision to sit out the season due to underlying health issues that would have made playing a risk. - Birmingham News

  01/18/21 - *Jamien SherwoodJr/2021, Auburn, 6-2, 216 (DS#6 SS) + More +

Another standout Auburn player is taking his talents to the next level. Auburn safety Jamien Sherwood announced Saturday he is forgoing his eligibility and entering the 2021 NFL Draft. The news comes after Sherwood played well at safety during his junior season despite battling through injury and helped the Auburn pass defense throughout 2020. Sherwood faced the challenge of replacing the production of departed Auburn safeties Daniel Thomas and Jeremiah Dinson and did so quickly. He played in all 11 games for the Tigers in 2020 and ended the year with 75 total tackles, three tackles for loss, three pass break-ups, one sack, one quarterback hurry and one fumble return. - Opelika-Auburn News

  01/13/21 - Roger McCrearySr/2022, Auburn, 5-11, 191 (DS#6 CB) + More +

Auburn's top cornerback will return for his senior season on the Plains. Roger McCreary, who took over the No. 1 corner role for Auburn in 2020, announced on Monday morning that he will return for his senior season instead of declaring early for the NFL Draft. McCreary is the second member of Auburn's secondary to announce a decision to return in 2021, joining fellow rising senior Smoke Monday. Two other defensive backs, Jordyn Peters and Christian Tutt, have already declared for the NFL Draft. Auburn is still waiting for safety Jamien Sherwood to make his final decision for 2021. - Birmingham News

  01/13/21 - Christian TuttJr/2021, Auburn, 5-10, 180 (DS#48 CB) + More +

An Auburn starting defensive back has decided to enter the NCAA transfer portal. Christian Tutt, the Tigers' starting nickel back the last two seasons, went into the portal Tuesday morning, AL.com has learned. It's an interesting development considering Tutt had planned on turning pro, had signed with an agent and had started prepping for the NFL draft. However, the former four-star recruit is apparently now considering a return to college for another season. - Birmingham News

  01/13/21 - Chandler WootenrSr/2022, Auburn, 6-3, 224 (DS#40 ILB) + More +

After opting out of the 2020 season, Auburn linebacker Chandler Wooten will be back in 2021. Wooten announced Tuesday he was returning to the team after sitting out in 2020, which would have been his senior season. Wooten's return is a considerable one for a linebacker corps that lost senior K.J. Britt but returns top tacklers Owen Pappoe and Zakoby McClain from this fall. Wooten announced in August he would not play football during the pandemic-altered 2020 season as he awaited the birth of his son. That decision came after a 2019 season in which Wooten was a crucial reserve linebacker for the Tigers who recorded 27 tackles with 4.5 tackles for loss. - Opelika-Auburn News

  01/12/21 - Roger McCrearySr/2022, Auburn, 5-11, 191 (DS#6 CB) + More +

Auburn cornerback Roger McCreary was a standout on the Tigers' defense in 2020, and he's not done yet. McCreary announced Monday that he will return to Auburn in 2021 for his senior season. That news is a major victory for the Tigers, which will have their top cornerback return for Bryan Harsin's first season at the helm of the program. The Tigers truly needed someone to step up in the secondary in 2020 after losing several key players from the previous season, and McCreary answered that call. The junior was often locked on the opponent's top receiver, and he ended the season with 45 tackles, seven tackles for loss, six pass break-ups and three interceptions. - Opelika-Auburn News

  01/08/21 - Zakoby McClainSr/2022, Auburn, 6-0, 227 (DS#17 OLB) + More +

The SEC's leading tackler will return to Auburn for his senior season. Linebacker Zakoby McClain, who led Auburn and the SEC with 113 total tackles in 2020, announced on Thursday that he will return to the Plains for "one last ride" rather than declare early for the NFL Draft. McClain is the second draft-eligible Auburn player to announce a decision to return in 2021, joining fellow junior Smoke Monday. McClain's decision to return means Auburn is set to bring back its two leading tacklers and starting linebackers next season. Open Pappoe, a sophomore in 2020, was second on the team and eighth in the SEC with 93 tackles. - Birmingham News

  01/06/21 - Eli StoveSr/2021, Auburn, 5-11, 194 (DS#57 WR) + More +

After a productive five-year run at Auburn, wide receiver Eli Stove is turning his attention to the NFL. Stove announced Tuesday he will not use his extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA and will instead turn his attention to the 2021 NFL Draft. Stove's decision comes after a productive tenure with the Tigers during which he recorded the fifth-most receptions in program history. Stove leaves Auburn with 136 receptions for 1,186 yards and six touchdowns. His decision means the Tigers' top three receivers from 2020 - which includes Seth Williams and Anthony Schwartz - will not return for 2021. - Opelika-Auburn News

  01/05/21 - Roger McCrearySr/2022, Auburn, 5-11, 191 (DS#6 CB) + More +

The Tigers desperately needed someone to step up in the secondary after losing several key players from 2019, and McCreary answered that call. The junior was often locked on the opponent's top receiver, and he ended the season with 45 tackles, seven tackles for loss, six pass break-ups and three interceptions. "He's had an excellent year," then-Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn said in November. "He's played with a lot of confidence. He's usually covering their top guy. We've got a lot of confidence in Roger." McCreary did not play in the bowl game against Northwestern - interim head coach Kevin Steele didn't explain the reason for McCreary's absence - but his potential return would be a major victory for what would be a much-more experienced Auburn defense in 2021. - Opelika-Auburn News
