Alabama has broken its own record for first-team selections on the preseason media All-SEC team. The Crimson Tide has 12 first-team selections on this year's preseason media All-SEC squad, which was released Friday. The previous record was 10, which was set by Alabama in 2017. Of the 12 first-team selections, six are offensive players - quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, running back Najee Harris, wide receivers Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs and offensive linemen Alex Leatherwood and Jedrick Wills. The other six first-team picks are defensive lineman Raekwon Davis, cornerback Trevon Diggs, linebackers Anfernee Jennings and Dylan Moses and then wide receiver Jaylen Waddle as a return specialist and all-purpose player. In addition, the Tide has three second-team selections - Waddle as a wide receiver as well as defensive backs Patrick Surtain and Xavier McKinney. - Birmingham News

It's easier for Alabama to be humble now. The Crimson Tide can thank Clemson for that, at least. There's nothing like a 44-16 drubbing in the national championship game to strip away any feelings of invincibility and self-satisfaction that come from scarcely getting challenged during the regular season on the way to another Southeastern Conference title.

"I know it sounds bad, but I'm glad I had that opportunity to feel a loss like that, because what can you learn from winning?" Tide quarterback and Heisman Trophy runner-up Tua Tagovailoa said Wednesday at Southeastern Conference media days. "You can't learn as much. But when you lose, you start appreciating things a lot more. Many lessons have been learned from that loss." It's a silver lining of sorts from a painful performance that rattled Nick Saban's dynasty and made it clear Clemson is a challenger for the label of college football's dominant program. - AP College Football

The Davey O’Brien Foundation has revealed the 2019 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award Watch List today, a group that includes 30 of the nation’s top returning college quarterbacks. Compiled by a subset of the Davey O’Brien National Selection Committee, this year’s list was selected based on player performance during the previous year and expectations heading into the 2019 college football season. All nominees are required to have previously started at least one game at their current institution.

Tua Tagovailoa of Alabama, a finalist for the Davey O’Brien Award in 2018, is among the players on the watch list. Tagovailoa is joined by eight semifinalists from last year: Notre Dame’s Ian Book, Mason Fine of North Texas, Georgia’s Jake Fromm, Justin Herbert of Oregon, Houston’s D’Eriq King, Trevor Lawrence of Clemson, Utah State’s Jordan Love and Shea Patterson of Michigan. - The Davey O’Brien Foundation

Las Vegas is on the clock for the 2020 NFL draft, which will take place April 23 to 25 on the Strip. The 2020 NFL draft prop for the first overall selection has been on the board at the Westgate sportsbook since shortly after the 2019 NFL draft ended. Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa opened as the minus 200 favorite to be the No. 1 pick, and his odds haven't moved.

Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert also is holding steady as the 4-1 second choice. Georgia QB Jake Fromm's odds have improved from 6-1 to 5-1, and every other player is at least 20-1. "Mostly everybody is betting long shots right now because it's so far out," Westgate oddsmaker Cameron Coombs said. "We have a little liability on Herbert, but our major liability is on these long shots. - Las Vegas Review-Journal
