  09/29/19 - *Tua TagovailoaJr/2020, Alabama, 6-0, 217 (DS#2 QB) + More +

Alabama is No. 1 in The Associated Press college football poll for the first time this season, replacing preseason No. 1 Clemson after the Tigers had a close call. Alabama received 29 of 61 first-place votes Sunday from the media panel as the Tigers' one-point victory at North Carolina gave the AP Top 25 presented by Regions Bank the first shake-up at the top this season. Clemson slipped to No. 2 and received 18 first-place votes. The last time a No. 1 team won and dropped was Ohio State on Nov. 7, 2015, after the Buckeyes beat Minnesota 28-14 at home. It has happened 74 times previously since the poll started in 1936.

No. 3 Georgia received four first-place votes. Ohio State moved up to No. 4 and received seven first-place votes. LSU was No. 5 and Oklahoma sixth. No. 7 Auburn received three first-place votes. At the other end of the rankings, No. 24 SMU is ranked for the first time since the program received the so-called death penalty for NCAA rules violations in 1987 and did not compete for two seasons. Alabama has now been ranked No. 1 at some point in each of the last 12 seasons, extending its own record. The second-longest streak belongs to Miami, which had a string of seven consecutive seasons with an appearance at No. 1 from 1986-92. This is the 119th time Alabama has been No. 1, most of any school since the AP poll started in 1936, and the 88th time it has been top-ranked under coach Nick Saban since he took over in 2007. Only Ohio State, Oklahoma, Notre Dame and Southern California have more total appearances at No. 1 than Alabama has under Saban. - AP College Football

  09/28/19 - DeVonta SmithSr/2021, Alabama, 6-0, 170 (DS#2 WR) + More +

Tua Tagovailoa and DeVonta Smith hooked up for five touchdown passes and a few school records while No. 2 Alabama ran away from Mississippi 59-31 on Saturday. The Crimson Tide (5-0, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) actually trailed for the first time this season before flexing its muscles against the 37 1/2-point underdogs. The Rebels (2-3, 1-1) couldn't even slow down Smith, who sometimes gets overshadowed in a loaded receiving group. Not this game. Smith had 11 catches for school records of 274 yards and five TDs, all by early in the third quarter. He had 221 yards by halftime, and added a 27-yard score to punctuate the biggest game of any Tide receiver.

Tagovailoa passed for a school-record six touchdowns and rushed for a seventh. He had matched the record of five TD passes in two straight games but finally eclipsed it in the fourth quarter. He completed 26 of 36 passes for 418 yards. It wasn't all smooth sailing for the Tide, even with a blocked punt for a touchdown tossed in. Ole Miss turned a muffed punt into a score and then took a 10-7 lead on Luke Logan's 33-yard field goal. Alabama's first deficit of the season lasted 3: 44. Then Alabama scored 31 points in the second quarter. - Alabama/AP College Football

Tua Tagovailoa passed for 293 yards and five touchdowns in just three quarters and Alabama rolled past Southern Miss. Tagovailoa had his second straight five-TD game and the Crimson Tide (4-0) raced to a 28-0 lead in the first 19 minutes in yet another lopsided victory. Last season's Heisman Trophy runner-up completed 17 of 21 passes. The Golden Eagles (2-2) couldn't keep up with speedy Tide receiver Henry Ruggs III early. Ruggs had a career high in receiving yards even before the first quarter ended, with touchdowns of 45 and 74 yards in the opening nine minutes.

He finished with four catches for 148 yards, all in the first half and all on four targets. He sprinted to the end zone on a slant pattern for the 45-yarder, then topped that after slowing down to catch the ball before accelerating to the end zone. Najee Harris gained 110 yards on 14 carries to become the Tide's first 100-yard rusher since last season's LSU game. Jerry Jeudy caught a pair of TD passes and finished with 96 yards on six catches. - Alabama/AP College Football

  09/21/19 - *Tua TagovailoaJr/2020, Alabama, 6-0, 217 (DS#2 QB) + More +

The glaring sun was the only thing that slowed down Alabama receiver Henry Ruggs III early, and that was only for an instant. Ruggs held up momentarily before pulling in his second long touchdown catch in the second-ranked Crimson Tide's 49-7 victory over Southern Miss on Saturday. He collected it and was off to the races again for a 74-yard score. Ruggs said it wasn't an underthrown ball by Tua Tagovailoa, who had another huge game. "The sun caught in my eye," he said. "The ball was right in the sun, so I actually turned around to make sure I secured the catch instead of catching it over the shoulder."

Tagovailoa passed for 293 yards and five touchdowns in just three quarters, including a 45-yarder and 74-yarder to Ruggs in the first nine minutes. He had his second straight five-TD game and the Tide (4-0) raced to a 28-0 lead in the first 19 minutes in yet another lopsided victory. Last season's Heisman Trophy runner-up completed 17 of 21 passes. The Golden Eagles (2-2) couldn't keep up with the speedy Ruggs, despite a little help from the sun. He had a career high in receiving yards even before the first quarter ended. Ruggs finished with four catches for 148 yards, all in the first half and all on four targets. He sprinted to the end zone untouched on a slant pattern for the 45-yarder. - Alabama/AP College Football

  09/21/19 - Terrell LewisrJr/2020, Alabama, 6-5, 262 (DS#4 DE) + More +

Alabama's injuries continue to pile up. Linebacker Terrell Lewis missed the game with a hyperextended knee, but Saban said he's expected back to practice by Tuesday. Christopher Allen started in his place. Nose guard DJ Dale was helped to the locker room late in the first half with a patella tendon strain. "Doc thinks he may be OK," Saban said. Placekicker Will Reichard left the game after a kickoff in the first quarter with a pulled hip flexor and Joseph Bulovas handled the duties after that. Saban labeled him as questionable against Mississippi next weekend. - AP College Football

  09/14/19 - *Tua TagovailoaJr/2020, Alabama, 6-0, 217 (DS#2 QB) + More +

Tua Tagovailoa threw for a career-high 444 yards and tied his personal best with five touchdowns to help No. 2 Alabama open Southeastern Conference play with a 47-23 victory over South Carolina on Saturday. Coach Nick Saban improved to 12-1 at Alabama in SEC openers and wiped away some bad memories of his last visit to Williams-Brice Stadium nine years ago. Tagovailoa and his receivers quickly got the Crimson Tide (3-0, 1-0) rolling with first-quarter TD passes of 24 yards to Najee Harris and 81 yards to Henry Ruggs III. Whenever the Gamecocks (1-2, 0-1) drew within range, Tagovailoa came right back to restore Alabama's edge.

Harris added a 42-yard catch-and-run score where he broke two tackles and leaped over defensive back R.J. Roderick on the way to the end zone. DeVonta Smith caught Tagovailoa's last TD pass, also for 42 yards. Saban reminded his players, about all who were in middle or elementary school in 2010, of the Tides' previous game here when the top-ranked Tide were soundly beaten 35-21. And the Gamecocks tried anything they could to pull off another miracle, but little worked - especially with Tagovailoa in complete control. Parker White's fake field goal run to the end zone was called back because of holding. Alabama snuffed out a fake punt to stop the Gamecocks well short of a first down. And when South Carolina drove to Alabama's 1 on the final play of the half, freshman Ryan Hilinski's pass to the back of the end zone was off target. Tagovailoa's passing yards were the third most in school history. He bettered his previous mark of 387 yards against Texas A&M and tied his personal best for touchdowns set against Auburn, both of those coming in 2018. - Alabama/AP College Football

  09/07/19 - *Tua TagovailoaJr/2020, Alabama, 6-0, 217 (DS#2 QB) + More +

Tua Tagovailoa's first throw went backward to Henry Ruggs III, who sprinted 75 yards to the end zone. That's about how the day went for No. 2 Alabama. Tagovailoa passed for three touchdowns and ran 25 yards for a fourth, all in the first half of the Crimson Tide's 62-10 victory over New Mexico State Saturday. The Crimson Tide (2-0) was off to the races starting with the game's first play, when Ruggs collected the lateral in a play that was initially ruled a pass. "We knew we wanted to start fast and what's the best way to start than first play a 75-yard touchdown," Ruggs said. It didn't get any better for the Aggies (0-2) after that in sweltering conditions that contributed to thousands of empty seats at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Alabama receiver Jerry Jeudy tied the school record with three touchdown catches, covering 21, 23 and 19 yards. He caught eight passes for 103 yards in his second straight big game.

Ruggs also caught a 10-yard touchdown pass in a game that started under a 95-degree temperature with a triple-digit heat index. There was just the right amount of drama for a Tide team facing 55 1/2-point underdogs: Zero. Tagovailoa played one series into the third quarter before exiting, but not before becoming the eighth Tide quarterback with 5,000 career passing yards. He also darted up the middle for the scoring run and finished 16-of-24 passing for 227 yards. The first play, he didn't mind giving up the passing stat. "I didn't expect us to score on the first play," Tagovailoa said. "It was a little bubble throw. It just shows what kind of guys we've got. You can throw something as short as that and they turn it into a big play." - AP College Football

Now that's more like it, Alabama. Playing for the first time since its crushing loss to Clemson in the national championship game, the second-ranked Crimson Tide overcame a sluggish start to blow out Duke 42-3 Saturday in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game. Tua Tagovailoa threw for 336 yards and four touchdowns before calling it a day late in the third quarter. "The goal we had in this game was to try to re-establish our identity as a team in terms of the discipline that we played with, the kind of toughness and accountability, and everybody putting the team first," coach Nick Saban said.

It didn't quite start out like he was hoping. Returning to the stadium where it won the Southeastern Conference title last December and the national championship two seasons ago, the Tide (1-0) was held scoreless in the first quarter - which happened only one time in 2018. But the Blue Devils (0-1) merely delayed the inevitable. Tagovailoa, whose brilliant sophomore season ended with a thud, completed 26 of 31 passes before giving way to backup Mac Jones with the Tide up 35-3. The left-hander spread the ball all over the field, going to his tight ends early on before turning to his dynamic receiving corps. "Tua played really well," Saban said. "He usually plays well when he's patient and takes what the defense gives." - AP College Football

  08/27/19 - *Dylan MosesrJr/2021, Alabama, 6-1, 225 (DS#7 ILB) + More +

Alabama middle linebacker Dylan Moses has sustained a knee injury that requires surgery. Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban said Wednesday Moses was injured in Tuesday's practice and is "out for an indefinite period of time." Saban says the loss is "certainly a character check for our team." Moses was likely the second-ranked Crimson Tide's top defender after the loss of a number of standouts to the NFL, including inside linebacker Mack Wilson. Alabama opens the season Saturday against Duke in Atlanta. Moses was a finalist last season for the Butkus Award given to the nation's top linebacker. He led the team with 86 tackles. The Tide had already another projected starter at inside linebacker, Joshua McMillon, to a preseason knee injury. That left freshman Christian Harris topping the depth chart going into the season at an already thin position. - AP College Football
