  12/05/19 - *Tua TagovailoaJr/2020, Alabama, 6-0, 217 (DS#2 QB) + More +

Tua Tagovailoa said being assured he'd likely remain a high NFL draft pick could make "the biggest decision of my life" a little easier. The Alabama quarterback is still weighing his options and going through rehab for the right hip injury that ended his junior season - and potentially his career with the 11th-ranked Crimson Tide. Once regarded as a potential No. 1 overall pick, Tagovailoa said Thursday that if he feels he'll still be a Top 10 or 15 pick, that might be too tempting to stick around. "I think that'd be tough to pass up," he said, sitting in a chair where the podium normally rests during Alabama news conferences. "But I think there's a lot more to it than that in some aspects." Tagovailoa stopped there, saying he wants to have that conversation with his family not reporters.

The quarterback doesn't have a timeline on when he will make that decision, saying it could come right before the Jan. 20 deadline for underclassmen to declare for the NFL draft. "This is probably going to be the biggest decision of my life," Tagovailoa said. "This is where I seek advice from what I believe and this is where I seek advice from my parents. But truly at the end of the day, the decision comes down to me, whether I feel like it's right for me to stay or whether it's right for me to go. "It's just a really, really big decision, and everybody just wants to know. That's what makes it even bigger, I'd say." - AP College Football

  12/01/19 - *Jerry JeudyJr/2020, Alabama, 6-1, 193 (DS#2 WR) + More +

Alabama dropped to No. 9 in The Associated Press college football poll, snapping the Crimson Tide's record streak of 68 appearances in the top five. The top four teams in the AP Top 25 presented by Regions Bank were unchanged, with LSU at No. 1, followed by Ohio State, Clemson and Georgia. The Buckeyes gained on LSU after their blowout victory at Michigan, receiving 19 first-place votes. The Tigers had 40, down 10 from last week. Clemson received three first-place votes. Utah moved up to No. 5, followed by Oklahoma, Florida and Baylor.

The Crimson Tide lost to Auburn in a wild Iron Bowl on Saturday to give it two regular-season losses for the first time since 2010. The four-spot drop by Alabama broke a string of top-five appearances that began Nov. 8, 2015. The week before the Tide's run started it had been seventh, and it had been as low as 12th earlier that season. Alabama passed the old record for consecutive top-five appearances of 55 by Miami (Oct. 8, 2000-Oct. 26, 2003) last season. Wisconsin moved up three spots to No. 10 after routing Minnesota. The Gophers dropped six spots to No. 15. - AP College Football

  11/23/19 - *Mac JonesrJr/2021, Alabama, 6-3, 217 (DS#3 QB) + More +

Mac Jones passed for 275 yards and three touchdowns in little more than a half and No. 5 Alabama began life without Tua Tagovailoa with a 66-3 romp Saturday over FCS Western Carolina. With Tagovailoa watching much of the game from a cart behind the bench, the Crimson Tide (10-1) treated its injured quarterback to a one-sided show against the Catamounts (3-9). Alabama is ranked fifth in the College Football Playoff rankings and hoping to somehow make the field despite failing to win the SEC West. This one was about taking care of business five days after Tagovailoa underwent surgery on his right hip. It wasn't the type of game for impressing the selection committee.

Alabama forced five turnovers, including Xavier McKinney's 81-yard interception return for a touchdown, and got big plays from Jones and wide receivers DeVonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle. Jones completed 10 of 12 passes with only one attempt after halftime in his second career start. Smith had four catches for 94 yards and two touchdowns, including a 57-yarder when he juked a defender before sprinting to the end zone. Waddle produced 101 yards and took a screen 54 yards for a touchdown, then returned a punt 49 yards to near the goal line on his next touch. Tagovailoa's absence gave his younger brother, Taulia, a chance for his most extended action. The freshman came into the game with 12:12 left in the third quarter and threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Smith on his first attempt. Alabama scrapped plans to redshirt the four-star recruit, who already had played in four games. - Alabama/AP College Football

The parents of Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa say the support the family has received "is nothing short of amazing." Galu and Diane Tagovailoa issued a statement Tuesday through Alabama's athletic department and on Facebook. Tua Tagovailoa had surgery Monday in Houston for a dislocated right hip suffered in the Mississippi State game. The team's surgeon, Dr. Lyle Cain, predicted a full recovery for the Crimson Tide star, who has been projected as a high NFL draft pick. The statement thanks "all of the Alabama family and everyone across the world for the prayers and outpouring of love and support for our son and our family." It also says the family has "felt the unceasing prayer, and words can't express how overwhelming and uplifting that has been for us." - AP College Football

Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has had surgery on his right hip. Alabama team surgeon Dr. Lyle Cain said Monday the procedure in Houston was successful. Cain described Tagovailoa's prognosis as "excellent" and reiterated that he is expected to make a full recovery. He says Tagovailoa will return to Tuscaloosa “in the next several days” to begin the rehab process. The fifth-ranked Crimson Tide's star, a potential top pick in April's NFL draft, was injured while being dragged down by two defenders late in the first half of Saturday's 38-7 win over Mississippi State. Tagovailoa has been projected as a potential No. 1 overall NFL draft pick. The junior had Alabama in playoff contention again and has already set the school record for total touchdowns, with 87 passing and nine rushing. - AP College Football

Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is scheduled to have hip surgery in Houston. Team surgeon Dr. Lyle Cain said in a statement Sunday that Tagovailoa will have surgery on his dislocated right hip Monday. An Alabama spokesman declined to disclose where he was having the surgery citing privacy reasons. Cain says the medical team "consulted with multiple orthopedic experts across the country, who specialize in hip injuries and surgeries." He reiterated that they expect Tagovailoa to make a full recovery.

The fifth-ranked Crimson Tide's star, a potential top pick in April's NFL draft, was injured while being dragged down by two defenders late in the first half of Saturday's 38-7 win over Mississippi State. Tagovailoa had been nursing an ankle injury and Alabama was considering holding him out of this game. Defensive linemen Phidarian Mathis and Raekwon Davis posted a picture with a smiling Tagovailoa in his hospital bed Sunday. He passed for 418 yards and four touchdowns in a loss to No. 1 LSU less than three weeks after right ankle surgery. - Alabama/AP College Football

Tua Tagovailoa injured his hip while being dragged down by tacklers late in the first half on what was likely his last series and No. 4 Alabama went on to bear Mississippi State 38-7 Saturday in a game that might have cost the Crimson Tide its star quarterback. Tagovailoa was injured after a scramble when he was taken down hard by Bulldogs linebacker Leo Lewis. Tagovailoa needed help getting to his feet and was carted off the field with 3:01 left in the second quarter. The junior had been nursing an ankle injury that needed surgery four weeks ago, but Alabama coach Nick Saban said it was unrelated. Saban called it "freak injury."

Alabama officials confirmed Tagovailoa was flown by helicopter to the St. Vincent's Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama. The junior was 14 of 18 for 256 yards and two touchdown passes, giving him 31 on the season. He was replaced in the second half by Mac Jones. The Crimson Tide (9-1, 6-1 Southeastern Conference) jumped out to a 14-0 lead on a touchdown run and a touchdown catch by Najee Harris, who finished with four TDs. Mississippi State (4-6, 2-5) cut the lead to 14-7 on a 1-yard scoring run by Kylin Hill. The Bulldogs must now win out to be bowl eligible. Harris finished with 88 yards rushing and 51 yards receiving. Jerry Jeudy had seven catches for 114 yards to pace the Alabama passing attack. Tommy Stevens was 12 of 21 passing for Mississippi State and had just 82 yards passing. Stevens did rush for 96 yards on 10 carries. - AP College Football

The junior and former five-star recruit has had to wait his turn to become Alabama's feature back. Now, he has developed into one of the most complete backs in the country, adding 19 receptions and five touchdown catches to 788 yards rushing and six scores. - AP College Football

Saban has been cautious, or maybe just coy, in public comments about Tagovailoa's status. The 2018 Heisman Trophy runner-up has missed the past six-plus quarters since getting injured against Tennessee and had a surgical procedure on his right ankle. Mac Jones took his place. "Tua's worked hard to try to get back where he has an opportunity to play," Saban said Wednesday night. "He's been able to practice some. We still don't know what his status for the game is going to be. We'll make it when the game comes. We don't know what kind of setbacks he's going to have and how he's going to continue to progress. So, there's nothing else I can really say about it." - AP College Football

Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has returned to practice on a limited basis, but tight end Miller Forristall could be out for the next six weeks. Coach Nick Saban says Tagovailoa could be "a game-day decision" with a sprained right ankle but he took snaps and went through some work "on air" in Wednesday's practice. He didn't go through team drills as the second-ranked Crimson Tide prepares for the Nov. 9 game against No. 1 LSU. "This is going to be a day-by-day, game-day decision," Saban said. "And there's nothing really else that I can say about it. I can tell you that his mentality has been really good in terms of how he's working, the things he's doing and how he's progressing and his attitude of trying to get back on the field and trying to progress. "That's always a good sign." Tagovailoa underwent a "tightrope" procedure on Oct. 20. The high ankle sprain is the same injury the 2018 Heisman Trophy runner-up suffered in the Southeastern Conference championship game last season, just to the other ankle. He returned in time to play in the College Football Playoffs against Oklahoma, but this would be a quicker comeback. Mac Jones started for the Tide against Arkansas last weekend. - AP College Football

Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has returned to practice on a limited basis, but tight end Miller Forristall could be out for the next six weeks. Forristall got hit in the throat in the Arkansas game and had surgery to repair an injury to his voice box. Forristall has 12 catches for 131 yards and three touchdowns. Saban says it didn't initially seem like a serious injury and Forristall was able to return to the game. Backup tight end Major Tennison has 21 yards and a TD on three catches. - AP College Football
