When EA Sports released the full ratings for its "Madden NFL 21" video game on Friday, the Denver Broncos thought the hit-power rating for safety Kareem Jackson was off the mark, so the NFL team asked the game-makers to review Jackson's credentials. That happened, and Jackson received a better rating on Monday. The Broncos requested the review via Twitter, and they attached video evidence to make their case - a hit laid on wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins of Jackson's old team, the Houston Texans, on Dec. 8.

Playing against the Texans for the first time after spending the first nine seasons of his NFL career as a cornerback for Houston, the former Alabama standout made 11 tackles, returned a fumble 70 yards for a touchdown, intercepted a pass and broke up two passes, including one to Hopkins with a big hit, in Denver's 38-24 victory. When the game-makers responded, the Broncos supplied another clip of the safety's ability to strike a blow. Jackson's original hit-power rating had been 83 (out of a possible 99), which was tied for 35th among the NFL's strong safeties. After review, Jackson has an 88 for hit-power rating, which is tied for 10th at his position. - Birmingham News

The SEC announced Friday the conference will honor the scholarships of student-athletes who elect to not participate in sports during the fall 2020 academic semester because of safety concerns related to COVID-19. There hasn't been any developments to the upcoming season since the league announced Tuesday all fall sports - excluding football - will delay the start of the season until after Aug. 31. Commissioner Greg Sankey has said in the past week a decision on football would come later this month. The conference also announced student-athletes who decide to sit because of the pandemic will remain in good standing with their team. "SEC universities are committed to full support of its student-athletes, whether or not a student-athlete decides to participate in sports during these uncertain times," Sankey said. "SEC student-athletes have frequently expressed their desire to compete, but it is important for student-athletes and their families to know the financial support committed to them by their institutions will not be at risk because of health concerns presented by the current pandemic." - Birmingham News

The lack of organized spring practices didn't help Bryce Young's bid to win the starting job over Mac Jones. Remember Tua Tagovailoa flashed some of what was to come in that 2017 A-Day game -- an opportunity this top-ranked QB didn't have. That said, Young has the mindset and talent to make a push when he actually takes the field for his first Crimson Tide practice. Jones has the experience edge entering his fourth season in Tuscaloosa. He knows the receivers and had time to develop the chemistry that can be a difference maker. Jones also played well in a loss at Auburn and delivered a few big plays in the Citrus Bowl win over Michigan. - Birmingham News

The Alabama-USC game that was to open the 2020 football season is officially canceled. As of Thursday evening, Alabama athletics director Greg Byrne said the "current plan is to play the game," but that changed Friday evening. The Pac-12 issued an announcement at 6 p.m. CT that its members would only play conference games this fall. Byrne posted an immediate response to the Pac 12 news. "As I've said before, USC AD Mike Bohn and I had multiple conversations over the last several months, and we were both planning on playing the football game on September 5 in Arlington," Byrne said. "With the Pac-12?s decision to move to a conference-only schedule, we will do our best to adjust. What that looks like is to be determined." Alabama was to be paid $6 million to play the game in the home stadium of the Dallas Cowboys, according to the contract signed in 2018. The Pac-12 follows the Big Ten's decision released Thursday to take the same path regarding football scheduling in the coronavirus pandemic. - Birmingham News

Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian is recovering following heart surgery performed last week, the school announced Tuesday afternoon. Sarkisian, 46, had successful heart surgery in Birmingham on July 2, according to a statement released by the athletics department. It was the result of an annual physical exam that uncovered a congenital cardiovascular anomaly. "He is back home in Tuscaloosa and is expected to make a full recovery," the statement concluded. The former head coach at Washington and USC is entering his second season as Alabama's offensive coordinator. He held the same job with the Atlanta Falcons from 2017-18 after serving as an analyst with the Tide in 2016. Sarkisian was set to take the Alabama offensive coordinator job in 2017 before heading to the Falcons. - Birmingham News
