  08/20/20 - *Dylan MosesrJr/2021, Alabama, 6-1, 225 (DS#7 ILB) + More +

Everything was on track for Dylan Moses a year ago as the junior linebacker prepped for his statement season. All-American hype came with Butkus Award talk and a sure first-round pick should he leave early. Everything changed Aug. 27, just days before opening the season with Duke in Atlanta. A torn ACL on Tuesday of game week sent a shock through a Crimson Tide defense that would be decimated by injuries all season. So, instead of participating in his first NFL training camp, Moses is back in Tuscaloosa for a senior season few predicted this time last August. The Baton Rouge product is again healthy and itching for redemption in this unconventional season.

At times, Moses admits, he might have been too eager to get back out there. "I was trying to rush my process, but my body kept telling me no," Moses said Tuesday. "As time went on and I got more and more strong there were times I would go out on the field without a brace. And I feel great." There's no hesitation to test the knee two practices into his return. "I don't think about it, don't have any second thoughts or do second guessing when I'm on the field," he added. "I actually feel really good. I feel once it's game time, I'll be ready." - Birmingham News

Alabama wide receiver DeVonta Smith said Tuesday he is not opting out of the upcoming fall football season. "I believe if I was thinking about not playing, I wouldn't be here right now," Smith said during a video news conference, which was his first organized media availability since the Citrus Bowl in January. Smith chose to return to Alabama in January for his final season of eligibility after leading the Tide with 1,256 receiving yards and 14 touchdown catches in 2019. "[It was] just really [about] getting my degree and wanting to come back and finish things the right way," he explained Tuesday. "I didn't like the way we did things last year and the way we finished. Just coming back to finish things the right way this year." - Birmingham News

  08/18/20 - *Bryce YoungJr/2023, Alabama, 5-10, 204 (DS#2 QB) + More +

In a return to something resembling normalcy, a few on-field questions were asked when Alabama football players did interviews Tuesday afternoon. And if there's one non-pandemic storyline that's peeking its head above the crowd, it's the quarterback dynamic. Mac Jones is the returning veteran while Bryce Young is the mystery blue-chip recruit whose yet to be seen publicly in a crimson jersey. Senior receiver DeVonta Smith got a good look at the No. 1 QB recruit from southern California. He's impressed. "He's going to be a great quarterback," Smith said via video conference. "With him not having a spring and just coming during the summer, he learns quick."

Young was the No. 2 overall recruit in the 2020 signing class who enrolled early for spring practice. Only the 15-date rehearsal was canceled a few hours before the first pads were set to pop in March. The 6-foot, 194-pound rookie still had a chance to work out with teammates away from the official workouts. "I like what I'm seeing. He's ready," Smith said. "Just the way that he approaches the game and handles himself, he's going to be a great quarterback." - Birmingham News

  08/15/20 - Najee HarrisSr/2021, Alabama, 6-1, 232 (DS#1 RB) + More +

Reserved by nature, Alabama running back Najee Harris took a step outside his comfort zone earlier this week when he became one of the leading social-media voices in college football promoting the #WeWantToPlay movement for the upcoming season. He explained his reasoning in a videoconference with local reporters Friday, the first time that the school has held player news conferences since before the Citrus Bowl in January. "I am a pretty closed-in guy, but it's just so much, like, uncertainty going around," he said. "Now I'm not in a position to be quiet. I have to speak up for others who can't speak."

Harris made his plea for college football to be played this fall, in part, because of concerns about how missing the upcoming season would affect the NFL futures of him and other players. "Us athletes want to play to create value for ourselves," he said Friday. "We're kind of iffy about the season, [but] age and time still moves on. We can't take that back. We probably could run back the season but we can't take back age and time. "For a running back, age plays such a factor in the next step, I guess if you want to go to the NFL and whatnot. They look at age so much nowadays...I came back [for a senior season] and I'm already 22. Then if I come back another season and I'll be 23, they can probably use that as something against me. It probably won't but it's just another thing to say about it." - Birmingham News

The SEC will require football players to be tested at least twice each game week during the upcoming season. That is among multiple protocols related to covid-19 that were announced by the SEC on Friday. In a news release, the conference said it made the decision in consultation with a 14-member medical task force that was assembled in April. Football players and anyone in close contact with the team will typically be tested six days and three days prior to scheduled games. The league's medical task force recommends exploring ways to conduct a third test with a rapid response closer to the time of a game. Game officials will be tested once each week. The SEC will use a third party to conduct the testing. According to the task force, team medical personnel must have "unchallengeable autonomous authority" related to determine when players can return to play, consistent with NCAA rules. - Northwest Arkansas Times

For the first time since 2015, the SEC will enter the college football season without a team ranked No. 1 in the Amway Coaches Poll. Alabama owned that spot each of the past four years. This year, that honor went to Clemson. But that doesn't mean the best conference in the sport isn't well-represented at the top. Six SEC teams were ranked in the preseason poll, which was released Thursday. Three of those - Alabama, Georgia and defending national champion LSU - rounded out the top five behind Clemson and No. 2 Ohio State, in that order. Florida came in at No. 8, Auburn at No. 11 and Texas A&M at No. 13. No other conference had more than four teams ranked in the top 15 (No. 2 Ohio State, No. 7 Penn State, No. 12 Wisconsin and No. 15 Michigan represent the Big Ten). - Montgomery Advertiser
