  10/12/20 - Najee HarrisSr/2021, Alabama, 6-1, 232 (DS#1 RB) + More +

There was a lot of discussion of the Najee Harris fumble near the goal line. It was one of those true borderline calls that could've gone either way. Forward progress has so much gray area and can work both ways when an RB gets an extra push or burst near the goal line. At least to me, this was a moment that either judgment call would have been right. Harris' school-record five rushing TDs in Oxford pushed him to the national lead with 10 rushing touchdowns. The next three on the list have played four games to Harris' three. Brian Robinson also ran the ball with a purpose, netting 76 yards on 10 carries while getting the bulk of the looks on the drive that tied it at 14. - Birmingham News

If a No. 2 vs. No. 3 matchup can be a Game of the Century, this might be it. No. 2 Alabama hosts No. 3 Georgia on Saturday after the Crimson Tide and Bulldogs held their spots behind No. 1 Clemson in the latest AP Top 25. The Tigers received 59 first-place votes, but don't be surprised if that changes dramatically after Georgia and Alabama square off. In college football history, the No. 1 vs. 2 regular-season matchups usually get the Game of the Century moniker. There have been 24 of those in the history of the AP poll, dating to 1936, including LSU-Alabama last year.

The 2-3 game has been even more rare. This will be the 17th in the regular season, not including conference championship games, and the first since Ohio State and Michigan played one in 2016. You might remember it for an overtime spot on a critical fourth down that went the Buckeyes way. Some of the other notable 2-3 games include: 1992 Miami-Florida State, aka Wide Right II; Colorado's breakthrough victory against Nebraska in 1989; and Minnesota beating Michigan 7-6 on the way to the 1940 national championship in the first 2-3 game. - AP College Football

Najee Harris' career game for Alabama also saw one of the most impressive streaks in the college game end. The senior had never fumbled as a rusher or receiver in his 466 career touches (423 rushes, 43 catches) before Mississippi's Jakorey Hawkins stripped the ball from him at the Rebels' 1 on a run in the first quarter. - AP College Football

Alabama's defensive problems seem more fundamental than simply Kiffin knowing what the Tide would do. There were plenty of reasons why the defense struggled last season under defensive coordinator Pete Golding. Injuries devastated Alabama, leaving the Tide with little depth and forcing unproven freshmen into key roles. Players said Golding had to simplify his defensive concepts, and ultimately, it didn't work. There aren't those ready-made excuses available this season. Linebacker Dylan Moses eschewed the NFL to come back and lead this defense. There is talent all over that side of the ball including multiple likely first-round draft picks in Patrick Surtain and Christian Barmore. Talent shouldn't be the issue with all of the five-star and four-star players stacked across the defense.

I've never seen an Alabama defense look worse than it did Saturday, and yet the Crimson Tide still somehow won. That's a positive though most Alabama fans will likely be focused on the defense's poor performance. Ultimately, if Alabama is going to achieve what it is capable of, it will need a lot more from its defense than it got against the Rebels. Maybe it will be as simple as changing the signals and calls, and we'll see a great defensive performance next week against Georgia. It's fair to say Alabama might not play an offense as good as Ole Miss' for the remainder of its SEC slate, and it can only go up from here. But excuse me if I'm skeptical that's all it will take for a defense that struggles as much as it did Saturday night. - Birmingham News

Alabama defensive back Jordan Battle was ejected for targeting in the fourth quarter against Mississippi football on Saturday, Oct. 10. He hit Ole Miss receiver Elijah Moore with 2:14 left in the fourth quarter after Moore caught a 46-yard pass from quarterback Matt Corral. Since the targeting penalty occurred in the second half, Battle will miss the first half of the Alabama game against the Georgia Bulldogs on Oct. 17. Battle had 11 tackles and one pass breakup before leaving the game. Alabama led 56-45 at the time Battle left the game. Alabama went on to win 63-48. - Montgomery Advertiser

Najee Harris ran for 206 yards and five touchdowns and No. 2 Alabama beat Mississippi and former Crimson Tide assistant Lane Kiffin 63-48 on Saturday night in the highest-scoring Southeastern Conference regulation game ever. Matt Corral passed for 365 yards for Ole Miss (1-2) and the Rebels put up 647 yards on the Tide. The teams combined for an SEC-record 1,370 yards. Alabama and Ole Miss traded touchdowns for much of the night, but with the Tide (3-0) leading 49-42 the Rebels misfired in Alabama territory and had to settle for a field goal. That was as good as a stop in this game. Receiver DeVonta Smith went 14 yards for a touchdown run to make it 56-45 with 3:16 left. After another Ole Miss field goal, Alabama recovered an onside kick and Harris busted a 39-yard touchdown run moments later to seal it. - Alabama/AP College Football

Coach Lane Kiffin said the offensive line play has been "very up and down" early on. "I think the center and the tackles have played well at times," Kiffin said Monday. "We struggled at guard so we're gonna have to play a lot better." That's good news for the interior pass rush and players like Christian Barmore. The defensive lineman missed the opener with a minor knee injury but was back against the Aggies and Saban said he continues to progress. "He makes a big impact, you know just to have a person who wreaks havoc, just makes big plays," Ray said. "Just to have him back in the huddle as well, it's definitely good to have. Just to work across from him, see how he works, you know, I think that his energy he feeds, other people feed off it too." - Birmingham News

Mac Jones' career performance earned him another honor Tuesday morning. After being named SEC offensive player of the week Monday, the Alabama quarterback was announced as the Maxwell player of the week. The national honor is selected by the Maxwell Football Club, the same group that presents the Maxwell Award to the nation's best college football player in December. Tua Tagovailoa was the Maxwell player of the week for his 2018 performance against Texas A&M, then again last year in a win at South Carolina. He also won the Maxwell player of the year in 2018 when finishing second in the Heisman voting.

Jones set career records with 435 yards and four touchdowns in Alabama's 52-24 win over Texas A&M. His 94.1 QBR was the second-best nationally among quarterbacks playing Saturday. "Well, Mac's matured," Nick Saban said Monday. "And that, I think there's a lot more confident now. I think he knows what he has to do to stay focused and play the next play. And he's, you know, he played within himself very well in the first two games and that's something that we want him to continue to do so I was pleased with the way he responded after the tip ball interception on Saturday." - Birmingham News

  10/06/20 - *John Metchie IIIJr/2022, Alabama, 5-11, 189 (DS#12 WR) + More +

Metchie was periodically mentioned as a standout behind the scenes last year, including after he scored two touchdowns in the team's first 2019 spring scrimmage, but he didn't play much during the season because of the Tide having a top four at wide receiver that featured not only Waddle and Smith but also two 2020 first-round draft picks - Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs. This year is different. Jeudy and Ruggs are gone. That's left Metchie with a chance to be that third option in the Crimson Tide passing game. So far, so good. Saban commended Metchie throughout fall camp. Now, he's off to a good start to the season and showing off that sneaky speed. Which didn't go unnoticed with Waddle. "I told ya'll about his sneaky speed," Waddle joked after the game on Saturday. "He got to showcase that today." - Birmingham News

Offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian has an embarrassment of weapons to work with. But with SEC level defenses to fend with each week, the best offense can be temporarily neutralized without good quarterback play. While Harris is a legit Heisman Trophy candidate, the Tide running game has yet to be a threat. Thus, Alabama's more dependent on the junior from Jacksonville, Florida. He's more than up to the task. He's confident, and it shows. What else would you expect from a four-star prospect who stayed committed to Nick Saban even after Alabama landed Tua Tagovailoa in the same signing class? Since taking over for Tagovailoa at the end of the 2019 season, Jones has grown into the role while evolving from caretaker to incumbent to unquestioned leader. The Bryce Young Era awaits. But this is Mac Jones' team now. And in a year off the unexpected, his eye-popping performances are becoming the norm. - Montgomery Advertiser

  10/05/20 - *John Metchie IIIJr/2022, Alabama, 5-11, 189 (DS#12 WR) + More +

John Metchie III entered Saturday with six career catches for 65 yards, having failed to reach the end zone. He was a high-profile signees in Alabama's 2019 recruiting class, but one faced with the logjam of four wide receivers with first-round potential. Metchie's first opportunity came on Saturday; he turned in a performance that will earn him many more in weeks and years to come. Metchie's five catches for 181 yards and two touchdowns were a catalyst for both quarterback Mac Jones' 435-yard performance and Alabama's 52 points in a 52-24 win over Texas A&M. "I told you about his sneaky speed," fellow wide receiver Jaylen Waddle said. "He got to showcase that today." Metchie's speed helped him be the most explosive player in UA's offense, with three of his five catches going for 35 or more yards and two going for more than 60. His first was a 78-yard touchdown on third-and-8, when Metchie found a way past his defensive back and provided Jones an easy, albeit well downfield, target. Metchie's performance will have an impact beyond a win over the Aggies. It comes after a week in which 22 of UA's 32 pass attempts were intended for the two returning receivers of note, DeVonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle. - Montgomery Advertiser

Mac Jones passed for a career-high 435 yards and four touchdowns, including a pair of deep throws to John Metchie III and an even longer one to Jaylen Waddle, and No. 2 Alabama romped past No. 13 Texas A&M 52-24 on Saturday. Briefly threatened early, Jones and the Crimson Tide (2-0) flexed their considerable big-play muscle in the passing game to put away the Aggies (1-1). Jones topped that with an 87-yard TD to Waddle, who had sprinted past two Aggies defenders to make the grab with nothing but green in between himself and the end zone. Metchie and Jones hooked up for a 63-yarder in the fourth, giving the sophomore five catches for 181 yards.

Jones finished 19-of-26 passing for a second straight surgically precise performance marred by one interception off a deflection. Waddle had 142 yards receiving and his touchdown catch was tied for the fifth longest in program history. It came after three Alabama penalties in four plays. Jones' three career pass touchdowns of 85-plus yards are the most by a Tide quarterback. Najee Harris rushed for two short touchdowns and safety Daniel Wright scored on a 47-yard interception return against Kellen Mond. - Alabama/AP College Football
