  07/22/21 - *Bryce YoungJr/2023, Alabama, 5-10, 204 (DS#2 QB) + More +

It appears the quarterback play at Alabama won't fall off anytime soon. That's quite a statement considering the recent run of Crimson Tide quarterbacks, but SEC Network analyst - and former Alabama quarterback - Greg McElroy said redshirt freshman quarterback Bryce Young has the tools for the trade. "He's a stud," McElroy said Monday, per 247 Sports. "And there's no denying his pedigree, there's no denying his physical attributes. The guy's unbelievable. Can run around, can create, is accurate, and does a pretty good job of going through his progressions. You talk to anybody that was on that staff last year, they'll tell you he has a really good foundational understanding of how to have his feet where they need to be, when they need to be there. So, he's already far ahead of where he needs to be."

McElroy did, however, have one question that still needs to be answered. "But, here's the but, until the lights are bright and it's your gig, it's still a little bit of an unknown," he explained. "Now, I'd love to have the starting point that he has with the physical attributes and all the other things I just talked about, but can he step into the shoes of a vacated first-round pick in Mac Jones - who had one of the best years we've ever seen at the quarterback spot - that's to be determined. I'm still very optimistic about it, that's for sure." Young was 13-of-22 passing for 156 yards and a touchdown in limited action over nine games last season. - Birmingham News

In a canary yellow tux, DeVonta Smith added a new trophy to his case Saturday night. The former Alabama receiver took home an ESPY from the prime-time broadcast on ABC. The Heisman winner claimed the ESPY for best college athlete, men's sports. It was the first time an Alabama athlete claimed that award after Mark Ingram (2010) and Derrick Henry (2016) were previously finalists. After accepting the honor, Smith said this was an experience he only could've dreamed of as a kid. Alabama was also a finalist for best team and Smith was a finalist for best record-breaking performance. The only other ESPY for Alabama went to Tyrone Prothro when he won in 2006 for best play ESPY for his legendary catch against Southern Miss. - Birmingham News

  07/07/21 - Brian Robinson Jr.rSr/2022, Alabama, 6-2, 224 (DS#7 RB) + More +

For the first time since 2015, a man with the last name of Harris won't lead Alabama football in rushing attempts. Former Alabama running back Najee Harris is now with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Damien Harris has been with the Patriots since 2019. The Steelers' Harris leaves behind a colossal job opening. He finished with 251 of the team's 414 carries given to running backs this past season, or 60.6%. That's the third-most for a running back during coach Nick Saban's time in Tuscaloosa. Derrick Henry's 72.21% of Alabama's carries when he won the Heisman in 2015 ranks as the highest.

Redshirt senior Brian Robinson Jr., who had 21.9% of running back carries this past season, is expected to have the first crack at replacing Harris. He's never been the main back, but not because he's incapable. "When he did play last year, he played extremely well for us," Saban said in March. "I was really pleased. He just didn't play that much, and it really wasn't his fault. Najee was one of those guys, the more he played, the more he ran the ball, the better he got. So, he really wasn't one of those guys you wanted to take in and out of a game all the time. He would get on a roll." The Crimson Tide could take the same approach with Robinson in 2021. Or, Alabama could decide not to give one back a majority of the carries. Even with Keilan Robinson and Kyle Edwards entering the transfer portal this offseason, the Crimson Tide still has plenty of talent at running back with players such as Roydell Williams, Jase McClellan, Trey Sanders and incoming five-star freshman Camar Wheaton. - Montgomery Advertiser

DeVonta Smith added another honor to his collection Wednesday when the SEC announced he was the Roy F. Kramer SEC Male Athlete of the Year recipient. The award is voted upon by the league's athletics directors and Kentucky volleyball player Madison Lilley was named female athlete of the year. Smith is the 12th from Alabama to win an athlete of the year honor and the fourth from the football team. Mark Ingram was the most recent male athlete of the year from his Heisman season in 2009. Derrick Thomas (1988-89) and Cornelius Bennett (1986-87) were the previous football winners of the award first presented in 1976 for men and 1984 for women. It was named for former SEC commissioner Ray Kramer in 2004. - Birmingham News

  07/04/21 - *Bryce YoungJr/2023, Alabama, 5-10, 204 (DS#2 QB) + More +

In the new world of college sports that began Thursday, Alabama's likely starting quarterback this season will have an agent. Bryce Young has signed with CAA Football for his marketing deals, Yahoo Sports reported Friday. On3 Sports added Young will be represented by agent Ed Berry. Later Friday evening, Young announced his first endorsement deal with CashApp. Under new state laws and NCAA rules allowing athletes to profit off their names, Images and likenesses, college athletes can be represented by agents in striking endorsement deals -- but not future professional contracts.

The NFL Players Association reminded its agents this week that "an NIL contract should not include any terms that require or condition any NIL terms on the player later hiring that Contract Advisor for NFL contract services." A freshman last season, Young is not eligible for the NFL draft until 2023. Nonetheless, Alabama's starting quarterback now has a business relationship with one of the most powerful agencies in professional football, headlined by well-known agents Jimmy Sexton and Tom Condon. Former Alabama quarterback Mac Jones is among a long list repped by CAA in the NFL. There is significant money on the table for Young in possible social-media marketing, as he has the most Instagram followers and third-most Twitter followers of any Tide player. Before Friday, Young had not tweeted since 2019. - Birmingham News

  07/04/21 - Malachi MoorerSr/2025, Alabama, 5-11, 196 (DS#6 FS) + More +

One day after Tigers quarterback Bo Nix announced a paid endorsement of Milo's Sweet Tea on Thursday, defensive back Malachi Moore became the first Tide player to strike a deal with the Birmingham-based company. Moore announced the marketing partnership Friday afternoon on Instagram. Moore has one of the largest audiences on social media of any Tide player, which could potentially earn him more than most of his teammates in paid endorsements. He ranks fifth on the team in his number of both Instagam and Twitter followers. Moore played at Hewitt-Trussville and became a popular name among Alabama fans last season after starting 11 games in the slot as a freshman. He became the first Alabama player to endorse a well-known product after Thursday's NIL floodgates opened. - Birmingham News

  07/01/21 - *Bryce YoungJr/2023, Alabama, 5-10, 204 (DS#2 QB) + More +

Will Alabama go back to back for the Heisman this year? The odds aren't too shabby. Alabama quarterback Bryce Young is sitting at +600 to win the Heisman Trophy this football season, according to SuperBook Sports. He has the second-best odds, behind Oklahoma's Spencer Rattler. Young, entering his second season with the Crimson Tide, is the only Alabama player on SuperBook Sports' 2021 Heisman odds. Last year, Mac Jones, Najee Harris and Jaylen Waddle were on the board, but DeVonta Smith took home the hardware.

Young saw time on the field as a freshman in 2020, but only for cleanup duty. Come Sept. 4, Young is predicted to be the starter vs. Miami. At Alabama's A-Day spring game, Young was named MVP after finishing 25-of-44 for 33 yards and a touchdown. "I think he's done a really good job all spring," coach Nick Saban said after the game. "We continue to work on him kind of having a presence out there that affects other people in a positive way, and I think he's starting to get more and more respect from the other players by the way he plays." - Montgomery Advertiser

Sending 10 players to the NFL Draft is usually not a recipe for an encore. In Alabama's case, the defending SEC and national champion just might defy the odds. The Crimson Tide placed nine players on the 75th Annual AL.com Spring Football All-SEC team chosen by the league's 14 football information directors. The offense that had five players taken in the first round of the draft - wide receivers Jaylen Waddle and DeVonta Smith, quarterback Mac Jones, running back Najee Harris and tackle Alex Leatherwood - put three on the All-SEC first team. They were wide receiver John Metchie III, guard Emil Ekiyor and tackle Evan Neal. Texas A&M also had three named to the first team - tight end Jalen Wydermeyer, guard Kenyon Green and running back Isaiah Spiller. - Birmingham News

  06/21/21 - Henry Too TooSr/2023, Alabama, 6-1, 227 (DS#3 ILB) + More +

New Alabama linebacker Henry To'o To'o checks a few uncommon transfer boxes. He's an intraconference transfer from Tennessee, a rarity in the SEC in the past. He's also someone who had an offer from the Crimson Tide in high school, decided to play somewhere else, then transferred to Alabama during college. There aren't many of those either, in part because coach Nick Saban doesn't whiff much in recruiting. To'o To'o is a bit of a unicorn right now, but with new transfer rules, this type of transfer might become less of a unicorn and more of a quarter horse.

The NCAA's new one-time transfer waiver that allows a player to switch schools without sitting out a year has already interrupted the status quo. The SEC agreeing to follow suit will also contribute to changes in trends. Alabama has already taken part in those changes, adding players such as To'o To'o and Ohio State receiver Jameson Williams this offseason. Both had offers from Alabama in high school, and both will be immediately eligible. The rules have changed, but to understand what To'o To'o, Williams and any other future transfers to Tuscaloosa will go through, a look to the past provides a few insights for the future. - Montgomery Advertiser

Alabama had five unanimous first-team All-Americans last season, but all will be playing in the NFL this fall. Who might be next? The first look at how Alabama players are viewed nationally entering the 2021 season came Thursday when the Walter Camp Football Foundation released its preseason All-America lists. Junior left tackle Evan Neal and sophomore outside linebacker Will Anderson were both preseason first-team All-Americans, while senior cornerback Josh Jobe was on the second team. Alabama's three selections matched Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas A&M and LSU but fell short of Clemson, Iowa State and Georgia's four picks each to the preseason list. - Birmingham News

  06/13/21 - Brian Robinson Jr.rSr/2022, Alabama, 6-2, 224 (DS#7 RB) + More +

Redshirt senior Brian Robinson has been in the room with elite running back talent for years. Now, he has the best chance he's had while in Tuscaloosa to be the lead back. He rushed for six touchdowns in 2020 while playing behind Harris, Alabama's all-time leader in touchdowns, rushing touchdowns and rushing yards. But just because Robinson has waited patiently for this opportunity doesn't mean he is guaranteed most of the work. He is joined by some talented young backs, such as sophomores Roydell Williams and Jase McClellan. Incoming five-star freshman Camar Wheaton could also receive some carries. Redshirt sophomore Trey Sanders, who's recovering from an injury suffered in a November car accident, could also contribute if healthy. Even with some recent transfers, this group remains one of Alabama's deepest. - Montgomery Advertiser

  06/13/21 - Kool-Aid McKinstryJr/2024, Alabama, 6-0, 199 (DS#5 CB) + More +

Ga'Quincy McKinstry has long been known as "Kool-Aid" McKinstry, but the nickname has reached another level. The Alabama football roster now has dropped Ga'Quincy and lists the freshman defensive back as Kool-Aid McKinstry. He received the nickname from his grandma when he was born because he came out smiling, he told AL.com in 2019. McKinstry also told his kindergarten teacher that was his name when asked. His name isn't the only thing about him that is flashy. A Pinson Valley grad, McKinstry received the No. 1 CB ranking in the country for the class of 2021 from the 247Sports Composite. He also was ranked the No. 17 overall prospect for the class and the top player in Alabama as a five-star prospect. - Montgomery Advertiser
