  11/20/21 - *Bryce YoungJr/2023, Alabama, 5-10, 204 (DS#2 QB) + More +

Bryce Young passed for more yards than any Alabama quarterback ever had in a game. The second-ranked Crimson Tide needed that kind of performance - and every timely deep ball to Jameson Williams, too. Young passed for a school-record 559 yards and five touchdowns and No. 2 Alabama clinched a spot in the Southeastern Conference championship game with a 42-35 victory Saturday over No. 21 Arkansas. The Tide (10-1, 7-1, No. 2 CFP) won its 15th consecutive game against the Razorbacks (7-4, 3-4), thanks largely to the Young-to-Williams deep connection that continues to be the ultimate offensive bailout.

Alabama set up a date with No. 1 Georgia in Atlanta on Dec. 4 after a visit to rival Auburn. "We left a lot of points on the board where we could have put the game away," Tide coach Nick Saban said. "And defensively, we gave up a couple of big plays but the big thing was they were like 10 of 19 on third and fourth down so when we had opportunities to get off the field we didn't get off the field." This one wasn't settled until Arkansas's onside kick went out of bounds with 1:02 left. The Razorbacks had stayed alive with Raheim Sanders' 17-yard touchdown catch from K.J. Jefferson, but took nearly five minutes to get there. Young completed 31 of 40 passes to keep himself squarely in the Heisman Trophy conversation, hitting Williams for a perfect strike for a 79-yarder in double coverage and flipping the ball to Christian Leary for another touchdown when he appeared set to run. It was the second-most passing yards in SEC history, behind Mississippi State's K.J. Costello, who threw for 623 yards against LSU last season. Williams caught eight passes for 190 yards with touchdowns of 79, 32 and 40 yards. - Alabama/AP College Football

  11/14/21 - *Will Anderson Jr.Jr/2023, Alabama, 6-4, 253 (DS#1 DE) + More +

Alabama jumped Cincinnati to No. 2 behind Georgia in The Associated Press college football poll on Sunday and Oklahoma dropped eight spots to No. 12 after losing for the first time this season. Georgia is a unanimous No. 1 in the AP Top 25 presented by Regions Bank for the sixth consecutive week and the Southeastern Conference has the top two teams in the poll for the sixth time this season. Alabama and Georgia were flip-flopped at Nos. 1 and 2 for five weeks in September and early October.

The switch from Cincinnati to Alabama at No. 2 was more about the Bearcats than the Crimson Tide, which closed the gap on UC to four points last week. Alabama took care of business against overmatched New Mexico State on Saturday. No surprise there. Cincinnati remained unbeaten after winning at South Florida 45-28 on Friday night. It was the fourth straight week the Bearcats played a team with a losing record and found themselves in a competitive game in the second half. That tipped a few more voters to drop Cincinnati. Behind the Bearcats, No. 4 Oregon, No. 5 Ohio State, No. 6 Notre Dame, No. 7 Michigan State, No. 8 Michigan and No. 9 Oklahoma State all moved up one spot after Oklahoma tumbled. - AP College Football

  11/13/21 - *Bryce YoungJr/2023, Alabama, 5-10, 204 (DS#2 QB) + More +

For 44 seconds, No. 3 Alabama actually was trailing New Mexico State. It didn't take long for Bryce Young, Jameson Williams and the Crimson Tide to change that situation dramatically. Down 3-0 late in the first quarter, Young threw a 50-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Williams and Alabama went on to romp 59-3. "I really challenged the team this week," Alabama coach Nick Saban said. "I told them it was kind of Judgment Day for us. We've been a little inconsistent. "We don't look at the scoreboard. It shouldn't affect how we play. An opponent is faceless. It's all about how we play," he said. Young passed for 270 yards and five touchdowns, including three to Williams, and completed 21 of 23 passes in just over a half for the Tide (9-1, No. 2 CFP). Alabama rattled off seven touchdowns in 20 minutes for a 49-3 halftime lead over the Aggies (1-9).

Young became the first Alabama quarterback to complete his first 13 passes in a game, playing only one drive into the second half when he lost a fumble in New Mexico State territory. The Aggies just couldn't keep up with the speedy Williams, who caught six passes for 158 yards. He had touchdowns of 50, 32 and 7 yards and had a fourth called back because he stepped out of bounds. Brian Robinson Jr. ran for 99 yards and two touchdowns - including a 63-yarder - all in the first half. Jonah Johnson completed 19 of 30 passes for 129 yards for New Mexico State, which was outgained 587-138. Will Anderson Jr. had two of the Tide's seven sacks. - Alabama/AP College Football

Alabama was living dangerously, with a missed extra point, a nonexistent running game and a lead repeatedly in jeopardy. The third-ranked Crimson Tide's defense kept turning away heavy underdog LSU late and Bryce Young passed for 302 yards to survive for a 20-14 victory on Saturday night. "Sometimes we have an expectation that we're going to win easy, but sometimes it's not so easy," Alabama coach Nick Saban said. The Crimson Tide (8-1, 5-1 Southeastern Conference, No. 2 CFP) preserved their national championship hopes in a game that was as tight as some meetings when both were nursing such ambitions. The injury-depleted Tigers (4-5, 2-4) and lame-duck coach Ed Orgeron didn't act like 29.5-point underdogs, which they were according to FanDuel Sportsbook.

It certainly wasn't this time for a team left with no margin for error after a loss to No. 13 Texas A&M. It wasn't over until the final play, a Hail Mary that fell incomplete in the end zone. The Tigers came up empty in three fourth-quarter trips into Alabama territory, including that quick venture to the 30 in the final minute. Young, the Heisman Trophy front-runner, completed 24 of 37 passes with a couple of touchdowns, including a 58-yarder to Jameson Williams. Williams caught 10 passes for 160 yards. LSU harried Young all night and held Brian Robinson Jr. to 18 yards on 13 carries for a team that netted 6 yards on the ground thanks largely to sacks. But Alabama returned the favor with Will Anderson Jr. racking up 12 tackles, 1 1/2 sacks and four tackles for loss. "Relentless effort, that's all I can say," Anderson said about the defensive performance. "It was relentless effort." - Alabama/AP College Football

Alabama inched up to No. 3 in The Associated Press college football Sunday behind top-ranked Georgia and No. 2 Cincinnati. The Bulldogs (63 first-place votes) are a unanimous No. 1 for the third straight week in the latest AP Top 25 presented by Regions Bank, and the Bearcats remain second. The Crimson Tide jumped up a spot past Oklahoma after blowing out Tennessee. The now fourth-ranked Sooners were shut out in the first half against Kansas before scoring 35 in the second half and pulling away late. No. 5 Ohio State and No. 6 Michigan both held their spots. Oregon moved up three spots to No. 7. No. 8 Michigan State, No. 9 Iowa and No. 10 Mississippi round out the top 10. In a week with no games matching ranked teams, five ranked teams lost, including two in the top 10. Penn State dropped 13 spots to No. 20 after losing in a record nine overtime periods to Illinois. Oklahoma State fell from No. 8 to 15th after losing at Iowa State. - AP College Football

  10/24/21 - Brian Robinson Jr.rSr/2022, Alabama, 6-2, 224 (DS#7 RB) + More +

Alabama players once again got to light up those celebratory cigars after another win over border rival Tennessee. This one just didn't come quite so easily for the first three-plus quarters. Bryce Young passed for 371 yards and two touchdowns, ran for two more scores and led No. 4 Alabama to a dominant fourth quarter and a 52-24 victory Saturday night over the Volunteers.

Brian Robinson ran for 107 yards and three touchdowns, helping the Crimson Tide (7-1, 4-1 Southeastern Conference) score 21 of their 28 fourth-quarter points in a little over six minutes. "It's a special rivalry to the Alabama fans and the players so we wanted to just have fun with it while we can," Robinson said. That fourth-quarter flurry turned a mostly competitive game against the Volunteers (4-4, 2-3), fueled by Hendon Hooker's 282-yard passing performance, into another lopsided final score. "The offense answered and we kept putting up points," Tide coach Nick Saban said. The result was Alabama's 15th consecutive win in the border rivalry, with the previous five having an average margin of 33 points. And the players got to return to the field after it was over to light up and celebrate. The Tide monopolized the ball for more than 40 minutes and converted 15 of 20 third-down plays. Tennessee was 2 of 13. Young, a leading Heisman Trophy candidate, completed 31 of 43 passes and turned five of his frequent scrambles into first downs or touchdowns. John Metchie caught 11 passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns. Jameson Williams gained 123 yards on six catches. - Alabama/AP College Football

Nick Saban and his Alabama Crimson Tide had a long week. Seven days filled with doubt, disgust and uncharacteristic angst. But a week after Alabama lost at Texas A&M, Bryce Young threw for 348 yards and four touchdowns and the No. 5 Crimson Tide rebounded to to rout Mississippi State 49-9 on Saturday night. Alabama (6-1, 3-1 Southeastern Conference) had 543 yards of total offense and the Crimson Tide had seven sacks. Alabama converted 12 of 16 third-down opportunities. "I was really, really proud of the way our players competed," Saban said. "We played a 60-minute game, and sort of dominated in the game. That's the way we like to play, and it's the way you want to play on the road." Mississippi State (3-3, 1-2) had 24 first downs but managed only 299 total yards and had three turnovers. Mike Leach's team finished with minus-1 yards rushing.

Alabama scored first against the Bulldogs and never trailed, leading 21-6 at the half. On the opening play of the third quarter, Young shaved the baby to hit Jameson Williams for a 75-yard touchdown strike and the rout was on. "This is really the first time all year that we really have done this the way we'd like to do it," Saban said. Roydell Williams ran for 78 yards. Brian Robinson Jr. rushed for 73 yards and two touchdowns and caught five passes for 68 yards and another touchdown. John Metchie had seven catches for 117 yards and a touchdown. Traseshon Holden also caught a touchdown pass. "We have some dynamic guys," Young said. "My job is just to find a way to get them the ball, and to try to get them the ball in a place where they can run and be special after (the catch). I think all of them did that tonight." Safety Jordan Battle had two of the Tide's three interceptions. - Alabama/AP College Football

  10/13/21 - *Eli RicksJr/2023, Alabama, 6-2, 190 (DS#23 CB) + More +

LSU starting cornerback Eli Ricks has decided to have season-ending surgery to repair an injury that has nagged him for much of the season, coach Ed Orgeron said Wednesday. The injury leaves LSU without its top two cornerbacks, with former All-America defensive back Derrick Stingley also sidelined indefinitely. "He kept on playing with it, and it kept on recurring. So he and his family decided they were going to get operated on." The injury comes shortly after the Tigers, who host No. 20 Florida on Saturday, learned that they also would have to play the rest of their 2021 campaign without a top offensive player, receiver Kayshon Boutte, who had a season-ending ankle injury at Kentucky last weekend. "It does make it tough," Orgeron conceded on a weekly Southeastern Conference-hosted conference call with the league's coaches on Wednesday. "Somebody's got to rise up to the occasion. We've lost several players, especially starters on defense. We've got some young guys that have to step up." Without Ricks, who had one interception this season, LSU plans to move Cordale Flott to cornerback and freshman Sage Ryan to the nickel slot in five- or six- defensive back formations, Orgeron said. - AP College Football
