Alabama will head into the postseason the same way it started the regular season: No. 1 in the nation. The Crimson Tide reclaimed the top spot in The Associated Press college football poll on Sunday after beating previously top-ranked Georgia. Defending national champion Alabama, which was No. 1 for the first six weeks of this season in the AP Top 25 presented by Regions Bank, jumped three spots after dominating Saturday's Southeastern Conference title game. Alabama received 50 of 62 first-place votes from the media panel. The Bulldogs fell to No. 3.

In between, Michigan was No. 2 for a second straight week after winning the Big Ten Conference championship for the first time since 2004. The Wolverines received 9 first-place votes. Cincinnati slipped a spot to No. 4, though it is only four points behind Georgia and received three first-place votes. The Bearcats are the only remaining unbeaten FBS team in the country. The College Football Playoff field was to be set later Sunday, with those same teams expected to hold the top four spots. - AP College Football

  12/04/21 - *Bryce YoungJr/2023, Alabama, 5-10, 204 (DS#2 QB) + More +

Bryce Young stunningly carved up the nation's top-rated defense, giving Nick Saban and Alabama a shot at another national championship. Young threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as the fourth-ranked Crimson Tide rolled over No. 1 Georgia 41-24 in the Southeastern Conference championship game Saturday, a result that likely sends both powerhouse programs to the four-team College Football Playoff. Young set SEC championship records with 421 yards passing and 461 yards total offense.

Georgia (12-1, No. 1 CFP) cruised through the regular season, barely challenged and a unanimous choice as the nation's No. 1 team for the past two months. The Bulldogs boasted a fearsome defensive unit that had allowed only 6.9 points a game. Young made them look like a scout team, surely bolstering his Heisman Trophy chances as well as moving on to an even bigger game on the final day of 2021. The playoff field will be announced Sunday, with the semifinals set for the Orange and Cotton bowls on Dec. 31. Alabama (12-1, No. 3 CFP) had six offensive scoring drives - five covering at least 75 yards, the other 62 - and finished with a staggering 536 yards against a team that was giving up just under 231 per game. - Alabama/AP College Football

  11/29/21 - *Jahmyr GibbsJr/2023, Alabama, 5-09, 199 (DS#2 RB) + More +

Georgia Tech running back Jahmyr Gibbs, who finished third in the nation in all-purpose yards, announced plans on Monday to enter the transfer portal. Gibbs made the announcement on his Twitter account. "After a long and hard process and talks with my family, I have decided to enter the transfer portal," Gibbs wrote, adding "I have loved my time here at Georgia Tech." Gibbs said he has made "life long friends" with teammates and coaches, including running backs coach Tashard Choice. “Thank y'all for believing in me and showing me nothing but love through the good and bad times." Gibbs also thanked Georgia Tech fans for their support. Gibbs made the announcement two days after Georgia Tech completed a 3-9 season with a 45-0 loss to No. 1 Georgia. Gibbs ran for only 1 yard on two carries before suffering an undisclosed injury that prevented him from returning in the second half. - AP College Football

  11/27/21 - *John Metchie IIIJr/2022, Alabama, 5-11, 189 (DS#12 WR) + More +

John Metchie caught a scoring pass from Bryce Young in the fourth overtime to give No. 3 Alabama a 24-22 comeback victory over rival Auburn on Saturday, rescuing the Crimson Tide's national title hopes. It was the first overtime in the Iron Bowl. Freshman Kool-Aid McKinstry tipped away T.J. Finley's pass in the final OT and Young hit Metchie just as he did in the previous one. Alabama (11-1, 7-1 Southeastern Conference) moves on to face No. 1 Georgia in the league championship game with its College Football Playoff hopes on the line. The Tigers (6-6, 3-5) dropped their fourth straight game after smothering Young and the Tide's prolific offense most of the way. Young capped a 97-yard drive with a 28-yard touchdown to freshman Ja'Corey Brooks - his third catch and first touchdown this season - with 24 seconds left in regulation.

Young converted a fourth-and-7 to Jahleel Billingsley, followed by two incompletions under pressure for an offense that had been held in check for 59 minutes. The teams traded touchdowns and field goals in the first overtime and both delivered scoring passes after lining up from the 3. The Tigers had been trying to win their third straight Iron Bowl at Jordan-Hare Stadium, and nearly pulled it off. Alabama was without two of its top offensive players in the overtime periods. Tailback Brian Robinson was on the sideline with an apparent leg injury sustained earlier in the game. Star receiver Jameson Williams was ejected for targeting on punt coverage in the first half. Bottled up most of the game, Young finished 25 of 51 for 317 yards and two touchdowns with an interception. Metchie caught 13 passes for 150 passes. - Alabama/AP College Football
