  Former Alabama offensive lineman Evan Neal chose not to participate in workout drills this week at the NFL combine, and with eight weeks before the draft, there is little left for the three-year starter to prove. Neal has long been considered a high first-round pick and could become Alabama's first No. 1 overall selection in 74 years. "We've had a whole lot of Alabama players that were worthy of having the No. 1 spot," Neal said Thursday. "If that would be me, that would be extremely special. The whole state of Alabama would be proud and the University of Alabama would definitely be proud, for sure." No Alabama player has been the first chosen in an NFL draft since Washington took quarterback Harry Gilmer in 1948.

The New York Jets also made Joe Namath the No. 1 overall pick in the 1965 AFL draft before that league merged its draft with the NFL. Neal will still have a chance to step on the field in front of scouts at Alabama's pro day March 30, in addition to meeting with teams in the weeks leading up to the April 28 draft in Las Vegas. "Had a long season," Neal said of his decision to skip combine drills. "I wanted to give myself a little bit more time to prepare. After talking with my agent, he thought that would be the best route to take for me." - Birmingham News

  Not able to participate in drills this week at the NFL combine because of January knee surgery, former Alabama wide receiver Jameson Williams believes he would have the fastest 40-yard dash time among prospects in the upcoming NFL draft. "I just know nobody could run with me," Williams said Wednesday. "I don't know no 40 time. I just know nobody could run with me. Just say whatever the fastest 40 time here is -- I'm faster." Williams said he did not have his 40-yard dash time at Alabama recorded during his lone season in Tuscaloosa. When the NFL last held its combine in 2020, former Alabama receiver Henry Ruggs ran that year's fastest 40-yard dash in 4.27 seconds. The record since the combine began electronic timing in 1999 was a 4.22-second dash by Washington's John Ross in 2017. Williams and his former Alabama teammate John Metchie will only take part in team interviews and medical evaluations this week in Indianapolis as they both recover from torn ACLs. - Birmingham News

  Of the six Alabama underclassmen who declared for the NFL draft in January, the one that might have raised the most eyebrows was wide receiver Slade Bolden. The redshirt junior had not received attention as a potential first- or second-day NFL draft pick, which historically has nudged players with eligibility remaining to turn professional. But Bolden, who played a significant role in the offense the past two seasons, announced four days after Alabama's national championship loss in January that his fourth year in Tuscaloosa was his last. "My idea was really, I felt like I accomplished a lot at Alabama," he explained Wednesday at the NFL combine. "Three-time SEC champion, I was a national champion. I felt like I played well on the field when I got the opportunity too. I felt like it was just my time." There was also little left to accomplish academically for the West Monroe, Louisiana native. "I got a masters degree in business and was kind of schooled-out, to be honest," he said. "I felt like it was time to come out and take the next step and take the next opportunity." - Birmingham News

  Almost three months after tearing his ACL in the SEC championship game, former Alabama wide receiver John Metchie said Wednesday is recovery is on schedule. "Around June, in June, I should be cleared, I should be good to go," he said at the NFL combine in Indianapolis. "Just ready to play football and run some routes." Metchie was included as a late first-round pick in some mock drafts before his injury but now is more frequently projected as a second-round pick in April's draft.

But in interviewing with NFL teams this week, Metchie has not sensed his draft stock slipping. "I don't really get that sense from them," he said. "I don't really get much concern for my injury. Everything checks off. Everything is going well. Rehab's going well, them looking at my knee is going well. "My recovery is going really well. All the doctors say it's going really well, so I shouldn't have any issues there at all." Metchie will not participate in drills this week at the combine or at Alabama's pro day later this month. That means his 40-yard dash time will remain a projection to teams that evaluate him. "They definitely ask about it," he said. "They think I would have ran a 4.4 [seconds], or low 4.4s, but it's definitely something we need to move on from here." - Birmingham News

  Alabama wide receiver Jameson Williams believes his team would not have lost January's national championship game if he had not injured his knee early in the second quarter. "I felt like we would've won the game," Williams said Wednesday at the NFL combine in Indianapolis. "Just -- things happen, you know." Williams had four catches for 65 yards, most coming on a 40-yard gain early in the second quarter when he tore the ACL in his left knee. Alabama and Georgia were tied, 3-3, when Williams was injured and the Tide finished that drive with a field goal to go ahead, 6-3. "I watched the play a lot of times," Williams said. "I don't know what the factor was. I don't know what caused the injury. I don't know what it was. I just know I turned around and tried to stick and, yeah."

Asked why he has re-watched the play so much, Williams responded, "Shit, I was trying to see what happened. I just couldn't believe it happened to me. It was something I never thought could happen to me." The injury happened when Williams tried to plant his left cleat in the artificial turf at Lucas Oil Stadium, just steps away from where Williams spoke to reporters Wednesday at the Indiana Convention Center. "It had a little memory but it wasn't pretty much anything," Williams said of returning to the scene of his injury and Alabama's loss. "I just looked at it, like, yeah, it could've been different.   Brian Robinson Jr. grew up near the Alabama campus watching the Crimson Tide win championships, and wanting to play a big part in one. With the fifth-year senior and first-year featured back running for a career-high 204 yards and Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young throwing three touchdown passes, the Crimson Tide earned the chance to play for yet another national title with a 27-6 victory over Cincinnati on Friday in the College Football Playoff semifinal at the Cotton Bowl.

It was a bitter finish for Desmond Ridder and for the Bearcats, the first non-Power Five team ever to get a taste of the CFP. They were physically overwhelmed on the big stage. "B-Rob was huge for us all night," Young said. "Making that first guy miss, falling forward fighting for those extra yards. He was a constant." "As a young kid, just always wanted to be a part of this program. Just always wanted to play for a national championship," Robinson said. "Just being able to go out there and just lead this team in this big game on this big stage...it's like a dream come true." Alabama (13-1) has missed the four-team playoff only once and will try to win its second national title in a row and fourth in the eight seasons of the CFP format. The Crimson Tide will play No. 3 Georgia, the previously undefeated team Alabama beat for the SEC title, in the national championship game Jan. 10 in Indianapolis after the Bulldogs beat No. 2 Michigan 34-11 in the Orange Bowl on Friday night. - Alabama/AP College Football

  Hours after adding four high schoolers to the class of 2022 on Wednesday, Alabama wasn't done. Former five-star cornerback Eli Ricks confirmed his transfer to the Crimson Tide on Twitter. The former Louisiana State-standout started as a freshman and was the only true freshman named to the AP Al-America Team in 2020 (third-team). "I never visited Bama out of high school but my senior year when I was at IMG, I talked to coach Saban almost every day," Ricks told 247Sports. "I was already locked in with LSU at the time but he's a great coach for sure. My family knows Bryce (Young) and his family really well and my parents have been talking with Craig (father) a lot about what it's like there." Alabama's other defensive backs in the class of 2022 include four-stars Earl Little Jr., Tre'Quon Fegans, Antonio Kite and three-star Jake Pope.   2021 HEISMAN TROPHY WINNER: Bryce Young didn't just meet the standard set by the star quarterbacks who preceded him at Alabama, he exceeded it. Young became the first Crimson Tide quarterback to win the Heisman Trophy on Saturday night, making Alabama the fifth school with consecutive winners of college football's most prestigious player of the year award. Young received 684 first-place votes and 2,311 points to easily outdistance Michigan defensive end Aidan Hutchinson (78,954).

Pittsburgh quarterback Kenny Pickett (28, 631) finished third and Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud (12, 399) was fourth. Alabama linebacker Will Anderson Jr. (31, 325) was fifth, putting two defensive players in the top five for the first time since 1962. Young has passed for 4,322 yards and 43 touchdowns, leading No 1 Alabama to a Southeastern Conference title and a spot in the College Football Playoff.   After wide receiver John Metchie was lost for the season because of a torn ACL, Alabama will be down another starter for the College Football Playoff. Cornerback Josh Jobe underwent foot surgery this week and is expected to miss the remainder of the season, On3 Sports reported Thursday. Rivals.com reported the surgery was on Jobe's toe. Kool-Aid McKinstry and Jalyn Armour-Davis, who missed the past two games with a hip injury, would presumably serve as Alabama's starting cornerbacks for the Cotton Bowl against Cincinnati on Dec. 31. - Birmingham News
