With the game tied 14-14 early in the fourth quarter, Irons scrambled to his left before finding room down the right sideline for a TD to give the Zips the lead.   09/02/21 - Teon DollardSr/2022, Akron, 5-10, 205 (DS#999 RB) + More +

The University of Akron football team will play Auburn Saturday at 7 p.m. in Jordan-Hare Stadium in the typical David versus Goliath non-conference game that tends to open the season. It would have been nice to have a running back with breakaway potential, who averaged 5.9 yards per carry and rushed for six touchdowns in a COVID-19 abbreviated, six-game season last year. However, Teon Dollard won't be there on the Zips' sideline anytime in the future, UA Director of Athletics Charles Guthrie said. Dollard was arrested by the Ohio Highway Patrol for suspicion of OVI Saturday in Ravenna.

Guthrie could provide no information on Dollard's status with the university off the field. On the field is a different story. "What I can tell you from a football perspective, which is an extracurricular activity, he is no longer on our football team," Guthrie said. Prior to the arrest, Dollard's situation remained in limbo in part due to a felony weapons charge from this past spring in which he was caught with a loaded 9mm pistol without a license. He was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and entered a guilty plea earlier this summer. It was held in suspension for a year with the stipulation that he join the Intervention in Lieu of Conviction diversion program. - Akron Beacon Journal

  07/23/21 - Kato NelsonrSr/2022, Akron, 6-0, 205 (DS#47 QB) + More +

There hasn't been a firm decision on who the starting quarterback will be, but it should be noted that Kato Nelson, a senior gifted with another year of eligibility, was one of two players, along with linebacker Bubba Arslanian, who attended MAC Media Day and met with the media. Nelson, who expects to be in a battle for the starting job this fall regardless of appearances, has a clear idea of what needs to happen for the Zips to enjoy success this season. He saw last year where misalignments and other communication issues put the offense in a hole. "One of the biggest things we need to do on offense is really communicate," he said. "We need to hop in the film room together - a lot more and just really work on being on the same page. We've done a better job of that this spring and I just think we'll continue to jell." - Akron Beacon Journal

  06/03/21 - Victor JonesrSr/2023, Akron, 6-5, 255 (DS#63 DE) + More +

University of Wyoming defensive end Victor Jones was reinstated to the team on Wednesday. The 6-foot-4, 245-pound junior was suspended after appearing in just three games during the Cowboys' pandemic-shortened 2020 season. Jones, who was suspended for a violation of team rules, missed UW's final three games last season as well as all of spring practice. Head coach Craig Bohl said at the time of Jones' suspension that even though Jones was not currently a member of the football team he was still enrolled at UW. Bohl also stated that Jones could rejoin the team this summer if Jones met a certain list of criteria, which included academic work. Jones has appeared in 24 games, including five starts, since he redshirted in 2017. The Sacramento, California, native had 13 tackles, 3 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks in three games last season and has 48 tackles, 6 TFL and 3.0 sacks for his career. - Casper Star-Tribune

  03/29/21 - Michael Johnson Jr.rSr/2026, Akron, 6-2, 213 (DS#999 QB) + More +

The answer to who'll be FAU's starting quarterback in the fall wasn't expected to be answered in the spring, but Michael Johnson Jr. helped his case for QB1 during the later stages of the Owls' spring game at FAU Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Johnson Jr. had a strong performance in the team's intrasquad scrimmage, with the Penn State transfer quarterback throwing two touchdowns on 4 of 5 passing for 100 yards for Team Jon Bills in their 23-18 win over Team Chris Perkins. Zuberi Mobley also stood out for Team Bills. The redshirt freshman running back out of Northwestern high school finished with 63 rushing yards on six carries and a touchdown. Bills, FAU's tight ends coach, and Perkins, the team's running backs coach, served as the head coaches while FAU head coach Willie Taggart observed the game on the field for Saturday's matchup, which was a traditional game instead of offense versus defense after players were split up among the two teams. - Sun-Sentinel

  03/22/21 - Teon DollardSr/2022, Akron, 5-10, 205 (DS#999 RB) + More +

A University of Akron football player is facing a felony weapons charge after he was accused of having a loaded gun without a license to carry it earlier this month. Teon Dollard recently was indicted in Summit County Common Pleas Court on a felony count of carrying a concealed weapon. Dollard, UA's star running back, has been suspended from athletics but is still enrolled at the university, UA officials said. "He's suspended right now, and I'm not going to say any more than that," UA Coach Tom Arth said Monday at a spring practice.

Dollard, a junior, will be subject to UA's Student Code of Conduct, which lists theft, possession of weapons, drug distribution, sexual misconduct, violent crime and chronic behavior issues as reasons for potential suspensions and dismissals. Akron police officers responded in the early morning hours of March 2 to the 600 block of Sherman Street for a call of suspicious people. A woman who called police said three people knocked on her door and one had a gun, according to an Akron police report. - Akron Beacon Journal

  03/18/21 - Kato NelsonrSr/2022, Akron, 6-0, 205 (DS#47 QB) + More +

One of the most surprising things thus far at the University of Akron's spring practice is seeing No. 1 on the field flinging passes with relative ease. Given an extra year of eligibility, quarterback Kato Nelson should have been a prime candidate to enter the transfer protocol and take his talents elsewhere. But there he is. Throwing passes on a rope, moving in the pocket and generally looking good after shoulder surgery. "It was real tough, but the biggest thing for me was trying to coach up my teammates, coach up Zach [Gibson], that's my boy and I think that's what made it easier for me," he said of missing last season. "I felt like I was still part of the team by being around the guys."

Looking good in spring practice is one thing, doing so in the fall is different and there's no guarantee that he'll reclaim the Zips' starting job with the season kicks off. Gibson gained experience the past two seasons with 10 starts and newcomer DJ Irons, all 6-foot-6 of him, promises to add to the interesting nature of the UA quarterback room. Nelson is undaunted after spending those six games of last fall's truncated season on the sideline. So far, he said, he's throwing the ball well with no soreness and the shoulder is back. - Akron Beacon Journal

  03/13/21 - Jeff Undercuffler Jr.rSr/2024, Akron, 6-5, 232 (DS#70 QB) + More +

Jeff Undercuffler passed for 192 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions and the Albany defense held off New Hampshire in the final 1:07 for a 24-20 win in the season and Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams on Friday night. The Great Danes, ranked No. 13 in the FCS Top 25, took a 21-14 lead in the third quarter on Undercuffler's 9-yard TD pass to Karl Mofor and extended it to 24-14 on Dylan Burns' 37-yard field goal early in the fourth. The Wildcats cut the deficit to 24-20 on Max Brosmer's 18-yard touchdown pass to Sean Coyne with 6:48 left. His dad played in the NFL. Being familiar with that, that NFL pedigree, is always a good thing...Great personality. He's a finance major. He's a 3.8 student. He's going to add a lot of value to our running back room. He's a consummate pro." - running backs coach Scottie Graham - Arizona Star News
