Whatever look the University of Akron football team's defense assumes, and based upon the comments of those tasked with assembling it, there's every reason to believe multiple fronts and versatility are on the horizon. That may be the case, but the question marks will be huge, especially for the linebackers. For the sake of production, but more for the sake of leadership, Bubba Arslanian returns for a sixth season. Arslanian expects improvement this year, based on a couple of factors. He likes what he sees in transfers Curtis Harper, a defensive lineman from Syracuse, and Victor Jones, a defensive end from Wyoming. He also mentioned that Logan Hawkins is coming on in spring practice. Those additions could help.

The reality for any defense is that it helps when the various elements complement one another. A strong pass rush only serves to help defensive backs in coverage. Versatility could be key for Akron Zips defense but Arslanian appreciates something else. "I think we're going to be able to keep the offense on their toes with our play calls and just being in certain situations, having the versatility to get different guys on the field," he said. "Guys have certain abilities and we're going to play to our strengths so I think that's going to be a really big difference this year." - Akron Beacon Journal
