2022 ALL-MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE FIRST TEAM: Linebacker - Bubba Arslanian, Akron,...A team captain, Arslanian earned all-conference accolades for the second time, as he was tabbed a First-Team All-MAC honoree after turning in a dominant season as one of the premier linebackers in both the MAC as well as the NCAA in 2022, leading the defensive efforts for the Zips. Becoming the fifth Akron linebacker to earn first-team league recognition, he is rated fifth in the NCAA in total tackles per contest (8.36), seventh in total tackles (376), eighth in assisted tackles (194) and 18th in solo tackles (182) and solo tackles per tilt (4.04).

Additionally, he ranks 15th among active career leaders in the NCAA across all divisions in total tackles (376) and in assisted tackles (194), 36th in solo tackles (182) and 57th in total tackles per game (8.36). In MAC play, Arslanian ranks second in the league in assisted tackles (44), third in tackles per game (10.7) and fifth in overall tackles (75), while adding 31 solo tackles. Arslanian has had 10 or more total tackles in 24 of the last 33 games he has played in overall. Arslanian surpassed the 300-tackle plateau for his career against Bowling Green on Oct. 1, 2022. - Akron Football

Lack of leadership was part of the problem with the UA defense last season. What shouldn't have been a surprise to anyone is that when mainstay Bubba Arslanian went down after the fourth game of the season, the defense played without direction, allowing 41.5 points per game in the conference schedule. Arslanian can be a tackling machine, but his ultimate value has always been his leadership. It was that way under coach Terry Bowden. It was that way under coach Tom Arth. And it's something, based on conversation, that Moorhead seems to recognize. If Arslanian can provide leadership, it could go a long way toward pointing the unit in the right direction. - Akron Beacon Journal

Whatever look the University of Akron football team's defense assumes, and based upon the comments of those tasked with assembling it, there's every reason to believe multiple fronts and versatility are on the horizon. That may be the case, but the question marks will be huge, especially for the linebackers. For the sake of production, but more for the sake of leadership, Bubba Arslanian returns for a sixth season. Arslanian expects improvement this year, based on a couple of factors. He likes what he sees in transfers Curtis Harper, a defensive lineman from Syracuse, and Victor Jones, a defensive end from Wyoming. He also mentioned that Logan Hawkins is coming on in spring practice. Those additions could help.

The reality for any defense is that it helps when the various elements complement one another. A strong pass rush only serves to help defensive backs in coverage. Versatility could be key for Akron Zips defense but Arslanian appreciates something else. "I think we're going to be able to keep the offense on their toes with our play calls and just being in certain situations, having the versatility to get different guys on the field," he said. "Guys have certain abilities and we're going to play to our strengths so I think that's going to be a really big difference this year." - Akron Beacon Journal

DEC 7 MAC EAST DIVISION DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Bubba Arslanian, Akron, LB, R-Junio, Aurora, Ohio,...Arslanian had a dominant performance to help lift the Zips to a 31-3 victory over Bowling Green on Saturday, Dec. 5, with a 16-tackle performance. His 16 total tackles represented a season-high mark, while he equaled a career-high mark with 11 solo stops, to go along with five assists. He also played a key role on special teams, forcing a fumble in the third quarter that was recovered by Corey Thomas. On a second-quarter punt, he knocked the ball back off the goal line to see the ball downed at the two-yard line.
