Lack of leadership was part of the problem with the UA defense last season. What shouldn't have been a surprise to anyone is that when mainstay Bubba Arslanian went down after the fourth game of the season, the defense played without direction, allowing 41.5 points per game in the conference schedule. Arslanian can be a tackling machine, but his ultimate value has always been his leadership. It was that way under coach Terry Bowden. It was that way under coach Tom Arth. And it's something, based on conv ersation, that Moorhead seems to recognize. If Arslanian can provide leadership, it could go a long way toward pointing the unit in the right direction. - Akron Beacon Journal

Whatever look the University of Akron football team's defense assumes, and based upon the comments of those tasked with assembling it, there's every reason to believe multiple fronts and versatility are on the horizon. That may be the case, but the quest ion marks will be huge, especially for the linebackers. For the sake of production, but more for the sake of leadership, Bubba Arslanian returns for a sixth season. Arslanian expects improvement this year, based on a couple of factors. He likes what he s ees in transfers Curtis Harper, a defensive lineman from Syracuse, and Victor Jones, a defensive end from Wyoming. He also mentioned that Logan Hawkins is coming on in spring practice. Those additions could help. The reality for any defense is that it helps when the various elements complement one another. A strong pass rush only serves to help defensive backs in coverage. Versatility could be key for Akron Zips defense but Arslanian appreciates something else. "I think we're going to be able to k eep the offense on their toes with our play calls and just being in certain situations, having the versatility to get different guys on the field," he said. "Guys have certain abilities and we're going to play to our strengths so I think that's going to be a really big difference this year." - Akron Beacon Journal
