Texas A&M wide receiver and punt returner Ainias Smith is returning for a fifth season, according to Smith's father, Maurice Smith. Ainias Smith later announced his decision on social media Thursday. "I have made many prayers and have had a plethora of thoughts, but after everything, I had to make an important decision that will set up my future," Smith said on the post. "With that being said, I will be returning to school for one more year. Aggie nation, let's run it back."

Smith spent the last several months weighing his options as he worked to rehabilitate a leg fracture suffered during the Aggies' 23-21 win over Arkansas at AT&T Stadium in Arlington on Sept. 24. He had until Saturday to decide if he wanted to enter this year's NFL draft. His social media post Thursday included a video of Smith running drills on a what appears to be a healed leg. It concludes with Smith tossing A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher a football and telling him, "Let's run it back." Smith has 127 receptions for 1,612 yards and 17 touchdowns in four years at A&M. He also has rushed for 384 yards and four TDs on 67 carries. - Bryan/College Station Eagle

02/02/23 - QB Shedeur Sanders, Sr/2025, Colorado + More +

Shedeur Sanders had yet to play his final game at Jackson State before Fox Sports in December labeled him as a favorite to win the 2023 Heisman Trophy for Colorado. Throwing that type of hype on Sanders right away might be a bit much, but the fact that CU has a quarterback being talked about nationally is rare and it's a big deal for the Pac-12 Conference. "The conference will have the greatest collection of quarterbacks going into the season, as far as athletes ready to make sure their universities are in contention," Merton Hanks, the Pac-12's senior associate commissioner for football operations, said to BuffZone in a recent interview.

Without having played a snap at the FBS level, Sanders may not be at the top of that list yet, but he's one of the most intriguing quarterbacks in the country going into next season. In two seasons at Jackson State, Sanders threw for 6,963 yards, 70 touchdowns and only 14 interceptions. He added nine rushing touchdowns, including six this past season. In 2022, he ranked third in the FCS in passing touchdowns (40) and fourth in passing yards (3,732) and completion percentage (70.6%). "I'm looking forward to seeing Shedeur against the Pac-12 defenses," Hanks said. "That's going to be something that I'll be certainly paying close attention to." - Daily Camera

Former Arizona safety Jaxen Turner announced on Wednesday that he's transferring to UNLV to play for first-year head coach Barry Odom. Turner, a three-year starter for the Wildcats, joined Arizona in 2019 under the Kevin Sumlin regime and played 33 games at the UA - 23 in the last two seasons.

Turner, a 6-2, 210-pound Moreno Valley, California native, started in 11 games this past season for Arizona and tallied a team-high 79 tackles, along with two interceptions (UA had four as a team), three pass breakups, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. Turner made a career-high 13 tackles in Arizona's loss to Oregon. Turner was part of Arizona's safety tandem alongside Christian Young, who is out of eligibility and preparing for the NFL draft. - Arizona Star News

Ohio State football finally found the cornerback help from the transfer portal it has needed for two seasons. Davison Igbinosun, a freshman starter at Ole Miss last season, committed to Ohio State on Tuesday, as first reported by On3?s Hayes Fawcett. The freshman All-American per College Football News recently visited Columbus, as well as Michigan, Tennessee and UCLA. With his combination of starting experience and performance, he immediately jumps into starting consideration for a fairly inexperienced Buckeye cornerback group. "I've been an Ohio State fan my entire life and everything worked out in my favor to get there," Igbinosun told On3. "They have a history of producing first-round cornerbacks and I want to be next. Another huge reason is their receiving core. They're the best wideouts in college football and competing against the best everyday will only make me better."

Unlike some of OSU's most successful portal additions, Igbinosun can provide long-term help with three years of eligibility remaining. The Buckeyes were also able to pick up a player Michigan also pursued. Igbinosun visited Ann Arbor after visiting Columbus last week. The 6-2, 185-pound Igbinosun posted 37 tackles, five pass breakups. A former four-star, top-200 prospect out of Union, N.J., he started 10 of 13 games. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Tulane posted its spring football roster this week-a 71-scholarship-player list that includes eight newcomers from the transfer portal, two earlier arrivals from the 2023 freshman class and leaves no room for any pickups when the late signing period begins Wednesday. A year after having phenomenal success in the portal on the way to a breakthrough 12-2 season, the Green Wave hopes to take the same route as it defends its first conference title since 1998. The latest additions are former Texas A&M wide receiver Yulkeith Brown, former South Florida tight end Chris Carter and former Marshall safety Andre Sam, who join offensive lineman Cameron Wire (LSU), linebacker Tyler Grubbs (Lousiana Tech), safeties AJ Hampton (Northwestern) and Darius Swanson (Nebraska-Kearney) and wide receiver Dontae Fleming (UL).

Brown, a 4-star prospect who was ranked the No. 176 recruit in the nation by Rivals.com out of Miami Central High in 2021, could bolster a wide receiver group that loses Shae Wyatt and Duece Watts, a duo that accounted for 68 catches and 15 touchdowns. As was the case with many of Texas A&M's high-profile signees, Brown made little impact in two years with the Aggies (zero receptions in 2021; six this season). - New Orleans Times Picayune

Mississippi State has its first tight end and a new volleyball player to boot. Georgia tight end Ryland Goede committed to transfer to MSU on Monday, and he'll bring his fiancée - volleyball player Alexa Fortin - to Starkville as well. Goede did not record any statistics during the 2022 season on a national champion Georgia team featuring a pair of standout tight ends in Brock Bowers and Darnell Washington. The fourth-year junior played in 13 games in 2019 and 2021, missing the 2020 season while recovering from shoulder surgery. Bowling Green State University's football team quickly turned its biggest offseason need into perhaps one of its biggest strengths for the upcoming season. Connor Bazelak was a big reason why. Bazelak, a former Indiana and Missouri signal-caller who was the 2020 Southeastern Conference co-freshman of the year, has bolstered a Falcons' quarterback room that has plenty of talent and potential.

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound senior, who has two years of eligibility left, is one of the team's five quarterbacks who have head coach Scot Loeffler excited about the future of the position. The coaching staff was Bazelak's biggest reason for picking the Falcons. "My goal is to play at the next level, so how much they can develop me in the areas I need improvement in is important," Bazelak said. "Obviously, I'm ready to put the work in. I feel like I'm a good player right now, and I feel like this coaching staff can take me to that next level and get me ready for the next level." - Toledo Blade

Clemson is coming off an 11-3 season which featured plenty of highs - an 8-0 record in conference play, a seventh ACC title in eight years - but some notable lows, too. The Tigers missed a second consecutive College Football Playoff after making six straight from 2015 to 2020 and were 0-3 against non-conference Power Five opponents in 2022.

Those losses to Notre Dame, South Carolina and Tennessee (in the Orange Bowl) underscored some lingering offensive issues and prompted Swinney to fire offensive coordinator Brandon Streeter after one season and replace him with former TCU OC Garrett Riley. Virginia's Nick Jackson is a three-time all-conference linebacker who entered the NCAA transfer portal after last season. He's still there. Jackson is just one of over 120 players who entered the NCAA transfer portal this offseason and have not found a new program yet going into Wednesday's national signing day, per a source with access to the database. Many of those, including the contingent from UVa and Virginia Tech, are backups and role players. But a few, like Jackson, were starters in 2022, while others, including Artis and Virginia running back Ronnie Walker, the former Hopewell High star, and defensive back Chayce Chalmers, saw decent playing time. Jackson was a three-time All-ACC selection who posted over 100 tackles each of the past three years. - Roanoke Times

Walter Rouse was a big late win in the portal, as the Sooners secured his commitment after Rouse had already committed to Nebraska. Bill Bedenbaugh had plenty of success last season in the portal, grabbing McKade Mettauer from Cal and Tyler Guyton from TCU. 02/01/23 - CB Jakorian Bennett, rSr/2023, Maryland + More +

Jakorian Bennett doesn't know what his life would be like without football. Maybe he would've stuck with track, but his answer didn't seem definitive. He spent a minute trying to envision a scenario where he wasn't the starting cornerback at Maryland, and nothing came to mind. Football has meant everything to Bennett, but life without it was almost a reality. He was an undersized defensive back who rarely touched the field through three years at McGill-Toolen High School in Mobile, Alabama. Bennett was on the verge of walking away from football when his former defensive backs coach, TJ McCord, told him "if you start quitting now, you are gonna quit everything for the rest of your life."

A spark was ignited. Bennett starred as a senior and then went on to play at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas, where he garnered 27 Division I offers before choosing Maryland. Three years after arriving in College Park, he can sit back and say his long journey has paid off. Bennett, who leads all Power Five players in passes defended (27) since 2021, is a two-time All-Big Ten honorable mention and has a chance to go to the NFL, a goal he didn't realize was possible until his last year of junior college. "He's such a hard worker," redshirt senior wide receiver Jeshaun Jones said. "He's getting what he deserves." - Baltimore Sun

Fifth-year senior and safety Otis Reese transferred from the University of Georgia but came to Ole Miss his junior year and played three seasons with the Rebels. Reese was smooth with his hands and can get in contact with the ball without drawing flags. For the Rebels, he showed natural balance, quick feet, excellent awareness and was skilled at reading routes and quarterbacks. Reese showed great talent during his final year as an Ole Miss Rebel and is a promising prospect for the 2023 NFL Draft. - Daily Mississippian

Cade McNamara was not only the highest-profile addition at Iowa this winter, but one of the highest-profile additions via the transfer portal across the country. The former Michigan quarterback lost the starting job to J.J. McCarthy in 2022, but he was a third-team all-Big Ten honoree on a 2021 team that went to the College Football Playoff. McNamara completed 63 percent of his passes and threw 21 touchdowns and seven interceptions in his Michigan career. Iowa also added ex-Wisconsin quarterback Deacon Hill from the portal. Hill appeared in one game with the Badgers but did not attempt a pass.

It's no secret McNamara is the presumed No. 1 quarterback next year, barring unforeseen circumstances. "Cade is going to be - well, we'll see how Joe and the rest of the guys do - but Cade's likely going to be our quarterback next year," Petras said last month. As McNamara recovers from knee surgery, Labas and Hill should have no shortage of spring practice reps. The biggest question facing McNamara will be how much support will he have around him. He has two tight ends who could potentially play in the NFL, but question marks remain at wide receiver, offensive line and play-calling. - The Gazette

Former Oregon defensive tackle Keanu Williams is staying in the Pac-12. Williams, who entered the transfer portal earlier this month, committed to UCLA on Saturday. He'll reunite with former Ducks Moliki Matavao, Jaylin Davies and Jaylan Jeffers with the Bruins. The 6-foot-4, 300-pound Williams had two tackles and a pass breakup while appearing in six games as a redshirt-freshman this season. He had three tackles in four games while redshirting in 2021. He's the 16th former UO player to commit to or sign with a new team this offseason. - The Oregonian
