 Cade Klubnik, Clemson, Player News

  03/07/23 - QB Cade KlubnikJr/2026, Clemson, 6-2, 205 (DS#5 QB) + More +

It was a quick and somewhat awkward transition from DJ Uiagalelei to Klubnik during the 2022 ACC title game. Days after the freshman took the reins in a clobbering of North Carolina, Uiagalelei was in the transfer portal and on his way to Oregon State. Bowl preparations were Klubnik's first run at being the leader of the offense, but last year's talk of a quarterback competition will stretch farther into the rearview mirror as spring and fall camps commence.

This is Klubnik's team, with transfer Paul Tyson and incoming freshman Christopher Vizzina very much expected to play supporting roles. "He's the full package," Riley said. "He's very skilled, he's very talented. But I just think between the ears, how he carries himself, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that's kind of the magic with Cade Klubnik." There are high hopes for Clemson's next era at quarterback. But what progress has Klubnik made physically since the fall? What's his comfort level with Riley's system? What steps has he taken as a leader? All eyes are on Klubnik now. - Charleston Post Courier

  02/01/23 - QB Cade KlubnikJr/2026, Clemson, 6-2, 205 (DS#5 QB) + More +

Clemson is coming off an 11-3 season which featured plenty of highs - an 8-0 record in conference play, a seventh ACC title in eight years - but some notable lows, too. The Tigers missed a second consecutive College Football Playoff after making six straight from 2015 to 2020 and were 0-3 against non-conference Power Five opponents in 2022.

Those losses to Notre Dame, South Carolina and Tennessee (in the Orange Bowl) underscored some lingering offensive issues and prompted Swinney to fire offensive coordinator Brandon Streeter after one season and replace him with former TCU OC Garrett Riley. Riley will be tasked with unlocking the full potential of sophomore quarterback Cade Klubnik, a former five-star recruit who replaced DJ Uiagalelei late in the season and - amid some growing pains - flashed undeniable star power against UNC in the ACC title game and Tennessee. - The State

  12/03/22 - QB Cade KlubnikJr/2026, Clemson, 6-2, 205 (DS#5 QB) + More +

Backup quarterback Cade Klubnik completed 20 of 24 passes for 279 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score and No. 10 Clemson reclaimed the Atlantic Coast Conference championship with a 39-10 victory over No. 24 North Carolina on Saturday night. Cornerback Nate Wiggins broke up two passes in the end zone, blocked a field goal and returned an interception 98 yards for a touchdown to help the Tigers win their seventh ACC title in eight seasons. Clemson (11-2, No. 9 CFP) won six straight ACC championships from 2015 to 2020 before failing to reach the title game last season. But coach Dabo Swinney's Tigers rebounded in a big way, going 9-0 against ACC foes this season to reach the Orange Bowl. They have Klubnik to thank for that.

With Clemson down 7-0, Swinney benched two-year starter D.J. Uiagalelei after the Tigers failed to pick up a first down on their first two possessions, Swinney turned to Klubnik, a 5-star recruit from Austin, Texas. He responded by leading the Tigers to four straight scores and a 24-10 lead at halftime. Clemson stretched it to 39-10 heading into the fourth quarter. It wasn't the first time Swinney has turned to Klubnik. He benched Uiagalelei in the second half against Syracuse and Klubnik responded by leading the Tigers to a come-from-behind 27-21 victory. Swinney also turned to Klubnik against Notre Dame, although the results were the opposite with the freshman throwing a Pick 6 in a 35-14 loss. Klubnik provided an immediate spark for Clemson. He led the Tigers on a nine-play, 71-yard drive, culminating in a 1-yard TD pass to Davis Allen. After Maye's fumble, Klubnik caught a 19-yard pass from Phil Mafah to set up Mafah's 4-yard touchdown run - Clemson's second TD in a span of 40 seconds. Klubnik then showed off his arm strength with a 68-yard pass to fellow freshman Cole Turner to set up his own 1-yard TD run for a 21-7 lead. - Clemson/AP College Football

  10/22/22 - QB Cade KlubnikJr/2026, Clemson, 6-2, 205 (DS#5 QB) + More +

Freshman quarterback Cade Klubnik rallied No. 5 Clemson to two fourth-quarter touchdowns after replacing mistake-prone starter DJ Uiagalelei and the Tigers won their ACC-record setting 38th straight game at home, 27-21, over No. 14 Syracuse on Saturday. Will Shipley ran for two touchdowns and a career-high 172 yards as the Tigers (8-0, 6-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) won their 14th straight overall - but not without a big-time scare from the Orange (6-1, 3-1). Uiagalelei was picked off twice and had a fumble Ja'Had Carter returned 90 yards for a touchdown as Clemson trailed 21-10 at the half.

The Tigers caught fire with the five-star Klubnik behind center. He led a 15-play, 80-yard series that ended with Phil Mafah's 1-yard TD run on fourth-and-goal to cut the deficit to 21-16. After a Syracuse punt, the Tigers and Klubnik got going again. He started with an 11-yard run before Shipley burst through the line for the go-ahead, 50-yard touchdown run for a 22-21 lead. Clemson went for two and Klubnik escaped one tackler in the backfield before finding Joseph Ngata for the final points. Klubnick pumped his fist and the once-subdued Death Valley crowd broke into hysterics. Clemson held Syracuse to 119 yards with no points the final two quarters. Shrader took Syracuse to the Clemson 30 with 32 seconds left but was picked off by safety R.J. Mickens on his fnal throw. Syracuse entered as the ACC's biggest surprise with a dynamic offense led by Shrader and the league's No. 1 defense. Both showed up in the first half. - Clemson/AP College Football

  08/29/22 - QB Cade KlubnikJr/2026, Clemson, 6-2, 205 (DS#5 QB) + More +

D.J. Uiagalelei is Clemson's starting quarterback. But that doesn't mean Cade Klubnik will only be holding a clipboard early this season. Clemson offensive coordinator Brandon Streeter reiterated after an Aug. 22 preseason camp practice that Klubnik will have a chance to play. Of course, the opener with ACC foe Georgia Tech is followed by non-conference games with Furman and Louisiana Tech, and should afford the Tigers an opportunity to bring the five-star freshman into the mix. "Cade's gonna play, there's no doubt about it," Streeter said. "How much is hard to tell. We're still a couple weeks away, and that's always based on what we're doing on offense, and how we're moving the ball, and all those things, take a big part of it, too." Clemson's coaches have been careful to buttress comments about Klubnik by reaffirming Uiagalelei is atop the depth chart.

The junior from California threw more interceptions, 10, than touchdowns, nine, during the 2021 season and completed 55.6 percent of his passes. He finished 15th in the ACC in passing efficiency, but there is hope Uiagalelei has refined his mechanics and can produce better results in his second year as starter. Klubnik, though, continues to make progress as the Tigers' No. 2. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney has raved about Klubnik's speed as a runner, calling him a "problem" for defenses as a scrambler. While Klubnik has suffered from some "purple jersey syndrome," failing to get the ball out of his hands because he can't be hit by defenders, he's being coached out of that habit. If coaching won't do it, playing in a game certainly will. "Once he gets lit a few times, he'll get rid of it," Swinney said. - Charleston Post Courier

Though DJ Uiagalelei remains the No. 4 Tigers' clear starter, Cade Klubnik's performance across two preseason camp scrimmages have further emphasized just how ready the backup is. "The game has slowed down for him," Swinney said Wednesday. "Cade has done an awesome job," offensive coordinator Brandon Streeter added Monday. "He's done nothing but continue to get better and better and better." Klubnik looked mostly sharp in his unofficial Clemson debut in the Tigers' April spring game, completing 15 of 23 passes for 106 yards and a touchdown to Uiagalelei's 17 of 36, 175-yard stat line. But the early enrollee also took five "sacks" - plays whistled dead since defenders weren't allowed to hit the purple jersey-wearing quarterbacks - and, as is frequent with freshmen, needed to bulk up for transition from high school to college football.

Consider the latter point solved. The 6-foot-2 Klubnik jumped from 185 pounds in January to 197 in August, making up a frame that the 6-4, 234-pound Uiagalelei doesn't quite dwarf. And though Klubnik's "purple jersey syndrome" is still a lingering issue, Swinney said he's playing smarter - and more dynamically - in the pocket. Added weight also hasn't done anything to slow down the former No. 6 national recruit. "Cade, he's a problem in the pocket because he's really, really fast," Swinney said. "It's just awesome, because he can really create. It's good for Clemson. It's also good for our defense to see some speed like that, because he can really, really run." - The State

FRESHMEN WITH HIGH EXPECTATIONS TO WATCH IN 2022: CADE KLUBNIK, QB, CLEMSON,...A Texas native rated among the top three quarterback prospects in 2022, Klubnik might not take the job away from DJ Uiagalelei right away, but any hint of struggle - Uiagalelei threw 10 interceptions and nine touchdown passes last season - could find the freshman warming up and ready to be thrown in the fire. At Westlake High School in Austin, he became the first quarterback to lead his team to back-to-back unbeaten seasons and state championships in Texas' highest classification since Kyler Murray. - AP College Football
