Saturday was the first chance BYU coaches and players got a first-hand look at what running back Ty'Son Williams can do against a live defense. The grad transfer from South Carolina obviously made an impression during a 107-play scrimmage at LaVell Edwar ds Stadium, as did fellow backs Lopini Katoa and Emmanuel Esukpa, another grad transfer. "I had him (Williams) break the team (huddle) because he stuck out today," BYU head coach Kalani Sitake said. "He's really starting to feel more comfortable in the p rogram. He did some really good things today. Lopini, Ty'Son and Emmanuel all did some good things today. From what I can tell and how I can evaluate, I think the guy is a special player."Offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes gave his evaluation of Wi lliams' performance. "He's exactly what we're looking for in a back," Grimes said. "He's an all-purpose back. He can run, he can catch, he can block and he's a willing blocker. A lot of tailbacks don't like that. He showed the ability today to break a ta ckle or make a guy miss. You think you have that in a back but you don't really know until you go live. A couple of the other backs did the same thing, but he (Williams) certainly did a nice job." - Daily Herald

Shai Werts said the last 10 days have been the most trying of his entire life. Given what he's gone through prior, that's saying something. "It's been difficult," Werts said after a team scrimmage Saturday, Aug. 10, at Paulson Stadium in discussing his J uly 31 arrest on charges of misdemeanor possession of cocaine and speeding in Saluda County, South Carolina. "I stayed down and I knew that the truth was eventually going to come out. Just didn't know how long it would take. It's definitely been hard to deal with."The truth - the substance found on the hood of Werts' car that night in Saluda County which tested positive for cocaine on the scene - was actually not cocaine. In fact, it wasn't a controlled substance of any kind, according to the Aug . 8 test results from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED). "SLED received the substance and completed the drug analysis," read the official report from The Eleventh Circuit Solicitor's Office. "The forensic scientist determined that no con trolled substance was detected." - Savannah Morning News

With depth questions for KU at wide receiver, however, Charlot enters this year with preseason hype, a familiar feeling but one that could prove accurate if the pass catcher's own prognostications come true - asked Saturday whether he has the ability to compete for a spot as a No. 1 receiver in the Big 12, Charlot went even further. "Oh yeah - No. 1 receiver in the country," Charlot said. "Yeah, yeah. I'm competing for the No. 1 receiver in the country." He continued. "So I mean, like I said, it's going to be a great year after all the adversity I've faced. I just prayed about it," Charlot said. "So I'm really competing with the No. 1 receiver in the country." Some who have experienced similar setbacks to what Charlot has endured wouldn't carry as much swagger.Charlot has most notably battled a litany of injuries throughout his collegiate career, the most severe coming in preseasons. Those ailments - Charlot said he suffered a knee injury a week before last year's season opener, for example - p ut him behind the eight ball from the outset. While there's still practices to be had ahead of the Jayhawks' 11 a.m. Aug. 31 season opener against Indiana State at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, Charlot believes those woes are in the past, now labe ling himself "very healthy." "Now I'm ready to roll and the season is just right around the corner," Charlot said. - Topeka Capital Journal

The 6-foot-2, 310-pound Truesdell was a rotational piece along Auburn's deep defensive line in each of his first two seasons, but the Tigers hope to be able to lean on him more this fall to help fill the massive hole left by Russell's departure. Sorting out that role has been the biggest question for Auburn's defense this offseason, and it has been exacerbated by injuries to Daquan Newkirk (Achilles) and Coynis Miller (shoulder), the former of whom may miss a good portion of the season and the latter of whom could return before the season opener against Oregon. That leaves Truesdell as one of Auburn's top options, though Nick Coe and Marlon Davidson both have the ability to move inside and play defensive tackle as well. It was Truesdell, however, who finished spring atop the depth chart at defensive tackle-though it remains to be seen if he can take on a considerable amount of snaps on gamedays. "This offseason, I've seen a lot of improvement out of Tyrone," Coe said. "He's been getting there fu ndamentally. He just needs to keep going and going and fight through adversity." - Birmingham News

Okwara is garnering plenty of national attention based on who he was last year (team-leading 8 sacks and school-record 21 QB hurries). But the old script isn't nearly as impressive as the new one. He's now 6-5, 248 pounds, up from the 241 he was listed a t last season. The may not sound like a lot, but it certainly looks like it. What that looked like Thursday was Okwara relentlessly bursting past Notre Dame's best offensive lineman in 2018, right tackle Robert Hainsey, in 11-on-11 practice periods on pa ssing downs. "He's way more physical," said senior Khalid Kareem, Okwara's book end at the other end of the Irish defensive line. "He's using a lot more technique too this year. "He's always been a good technician, but he's honing that skill so much more . Watch out for Julian Okwara." - South Bend Tribune

The NCAA will move forward without the use of standardized player availability reports this college football season. The organization's Board of Governors made the decision on Wednesday, stating that player availability reporting "is not a viable option at this time." It was part of a larger discussion centered on the impact of legalized sports gambling and its impact on amateur athletics and the NCAA. The availability reports would have been a similar concept as injury reports used by professional leag ues like the NFL or NBA.The group also reaffirmed its support of current legislation that forbids coaches and athletes from wagering on sporting events or providing information to others who are involved in sports wagering. "The ad hoc committee g athered thorough feedback from conference commissioners, athletics administrators, athletic trainers and student-athletes across all three divisions about potential player availability reporting," said Michael Drake, chair of the Board of Governors follo wing the group's meeting Tuesday in Indianapolis. "The membership has significant concerns about the purpose, parameters, enforcement and effectiveness of a player availability reporting model." - Orlando Sentinel

Tracking/Logging/Cross checking CFB Player injuries, especially important for the yearly Draft pool is a full-time job within many other categories of information gathering. It's VERY vital information for Team Scouting Director's and Area Scouts gather it up best they can until the end of season reports, which the NCAA does help. By then though, it's more vital to the Draft process and the gambling issues they claim play no part, really. There are still folks who help track it pretty well (Injury Porta l style) including the teams, but the information is very fluid.

Arkansas' offensive line is pushing forward after losing a piece during the first weekend of preseason practices. Razorbacks coach Chad Morris confirmed Monday afternoon in a brief meeting with the media that redshirt freshman offensive lineman Noah Gatl in, a native of Jonesboro, tore the ACL in his right knee on Friday in the team's first practice of the fall. The plan is for Gatlin, who played in four games last season, to undergo surgery on the knee toward the end of this week, Morris added."I t's unfortunate," Morris said. "But that happens. It's football. You move on. He'll become a better person and a better player because of it. It's just some adversity that he'll have to go through." Morris is hopeful Gatlin will recover in time to partic ipate in some spring practices in 2020. - Northwest Arkansas Times

The Tua Tagovailoa-Steve Sarkisian connection goes back to a different time in a much different place than Tuscaloosa. Then head coach at USC, the current Alabama offensive coordinator was in Hawaii watching a young high school talent whizzing the footba ll around with his left arm. Meeting with reporters at Alabama's annual media day, Sarkisian recalled the first time he saw the 2018 Heisman runner-up. "I'll never forget," Sarkisian said Saturday, "he was in high school, the 10th grade, and it was a rea lly windy, windy day in Hawaii, and he was cutting the wind. I mean it was extremely accurate, not only stood out to me and still does to this day."Over the next few years, that kid became one of the most explosive passers in college football. And after recruiting him to Los Angeles, Sarkisian now gets a shot at leading Tagovailoa deep in SEC country. The progress is evident while the strong-armed throws remain. "Now after watching him play college football, studying the tape, being attentive in spring ball, he's a very instinctive player," Sarkisian said. "He has a natural feel for passing the football and the passing game. Just on that note, I think those two things stand out to me - his ability to stay accurate regardless of the elements and his quick release, and then the instincts he plays with." - Birmingham News
