The wait is over for Laviska Shenault. After questions about his health and durability forced his first-round talent out of the opening round of the NFL draft, Colorado's standout receiver did not have to wait long to hear his name on Friday, as the Jack sonville Jaguars selected Shenault with the 10th pick of the second round (42nd overall). Shenault becomes the Buffs highest selection in the draft since both Nate Solder and Jimmy Smith were selected in the first round in 2011. Shenault is the 10th unde rclassman from CU to get selected in the NFL draft and the 273rd NFL draft pick overall that called CU home. He is just the second Buffs player to be selected by Jacksonville and the first since the Jaguars took former CU cornerback Chris Hudson in the t hird round of the 1995 draft.The Buffs enjoyed another big moment before Friday night's second and third rounds were complete, as speedy outside linebacker Davion Taylor went to Philadelphia late in the third round (103rd overall). "Definitely had first round hopes, but, I mean, at the end of the day it is what it is," Shenault said following the draft. "I understand everything happens for a reason, but I'm just ready to work, to be honest. That's really all there is to that." Shenault caught 142 passes for 1,775 yards and 10 touchdowns over the past two seasons, adding another 276 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground. - Daily Camera

There are several Colorado Buffaloes hoping to hear their names called during the draft, but Shenault is expected to be the first off the board. Throughout the history of the NFL Draft, CU has had 24 first-round picks, but none since 2011 when tackle Nat e Solder (No. 17 overall to New England) and Jimmy Smith (No. 27 to Baltimore) were first selected. Four CU receivers have been first rounders, with Rae Carruth (No. 27 to Carolina in 1997) being the most recent. Shenault, who skipped his senior season a t CU to enter the draft, certainly has the ability to hear his name on Thursday night, but his health has been his biggest obstacle. It didn't help his draft status when he aggravated a core muscle injury at the NFL Combine in February.Shortly aft er the combine, Shenault had surgery. On Saturday, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, reported that Dr. William Meyers of Vincera Core Physicians in Philadelphia sent a letter to all 32 teams about Shenault. "I watched Laviska go through regular football drills ye sterday at 5 ½ weeks postop and he looked terrific," Meyers wrote in a letter sent Tuesday. A lingering core muscle injury prevented Laviska Shenault from showcasing his skills and speed at the NFL scouting combine, where the former University of Colorado superstar posted a slower-than-expected 4.58 seconds in the 40-yard dash. What was instead on display in Indianapolis last week was Shenault's off-the-charts ambition, the same desire that drove him to play through pain most of last season. Following his combine cameo, Shenault flew straight to Philadelphia, where noted surgeon Dr. William My ers on Tuesday performed a bilateral pelvic repair, said Shenault's agent, Damarius Bilbo. Although Shenault was disappointed in his 40 time, Bilbo said Myers told him he was stunned Shenault ran as fast as he did given the injury. Shenault will need abo ut six weeks of rehab and recovery, meaning he'll miss CU's pro day later this month and he won't be able to work out for teams ahead of the April 23-25 NFL draft. Dynamic Colorado wide receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. will skip his final season and declare for the NFL draft. Shenault is a top prospect after a career with the Buffaloes that included plenty of big catches while facing plenty of double coverage. He also was hampered by injuries as he finished with 149 catches for 1,943 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also had 280 yards rushing and seven scores. Over the last two seasons, the Buffaloes took advantage of Shenault's power and speed by lining him up at differe nt spots. He played outside receiver, in the slot, h-back, tailback, some tight end and even ran the wildcat position. He posted big numbers in 2018 when he had 86 receptions for 1,011 yards and six touchdowns. He missed three games that season with an i njury."Laviska Shenault represented our relentless culture and was one of the most dynamic, dominant and versatile players that I have ever coached," Buffaloes coach Mel Tucker said. "He embodies the true `show me, don't tell me' competitive spiri t. I look forward to watching him develop and compete at the elite level and thank him for his contributions on and off the field." Laviska Shenault Jr., one of the most dynamic players ever to play at the University of Colorado, is forgoing his senior year to enter the NFL draft. Shenault announced the decision on his Twitter page. "Laviska Shenault represented our relentless cultur e and was one of the most dynamic, dominant and versatile players that I have ever coached," said CU coach Mel Tucker. Those bowl thoughts by the Colorado Buffaloes are still distant. At least they're still flickering. For that, they can thank a banged-up Laviska Shenault Jr. picking up a late fourth down with a powerful surge, a maligned defense digging in and of course a fill-in freshman kicker coming up clutch with the biggest boot of his life. Evan Price made a 37-yard field goal with no time remaining as Colorado beat Stanford 16-13 on Saturday to snap a five-game skid. "Finally," Shenault said. "Finally, we got th is one. Shout-out to our kicker -- freshman, too." Price was promoted this week with James Stefanou dealing with a hip injury. Price was instantly mobbed by teammates, briefly falling to the ground and losing his helmet. It was Colorado's first game-winn ing field goal as time expired since Sept. 29, 2007, against Oklahoma.Shenault and the offense did the rest for the Buffaloes (4-6, 2-5 Pac-12), who need to win their final two games to become bowl eligible. Quarterback Steven Montez methodically drove the Buffaloes down the field to set up the winning score. The drive was aided by a pass interference call on Stanford's Kyu Blu Kelly, who reached out to slow down Tony Brown on a deep pass. Colorado also went for it on fourth-and-short at the Stan ford 34, with Shenault Jr. taking a handoff and churning for the yardage -- banged up knee and all. "I live for moments like this," Shenault said. Shenault briefly went to the Colorado locker room late in the second quarter with a knee injury only to ret urn for the second half. Colorado's Laviska Shenault was held to three receptions for 18 yards, a week after he had nine catches for 172 yards against USC. "It's a group effort when you have something like that. We had to be conscious of where he was at all times," Kelly said. " We did a lot of in-and-out on him and top-down coverage on him. I thought that Darnay (Holmes) did a nice job when he was iso'd on him one-on-one. Shenault set 12 school records a season ago, bursting onto the nation scene as one of the top receivers and overall threats in the nation. In the midst of a go-route during a 7-on-7 drill before his senior year of high school, Laviska Shenault noticed out of the corner of his eye that he was rapidly approaching a set of bleachers resting on the sidelines, just outside of the white lines of the field. "I'm just running and, as the ball gets closer and closer, I realize the bench is right there," he said. A crash was inevitable, but Shenault put his forearm up to block his face just in time. He was left with a cut under his eye, a nasty scar that still remains on his right forearm and the wind knocked out of him. "I barely blocked myself in the right way," Colorado's star receiver said recently in recalling that scary moment. "I've got a lot of scars and some of the scars could have ended m y career."Shenault also has scars on his leg and chest and he has spent this offseason recovering from toe and shoulder surgeries. No, the best football player CU has had in years is not invincible, but he is determined and he hasn't been fazed by anything that's left its permanent mark on his body. "Yeah, I'm a soldier," he said. "I'm never nervous, regardless of what I'm doing. I go out thinking I'm about to just be me. I don't think about getting hurt.
