Jermar Jefferson likely played his final Oregon State game against Arizona State, as the junior running back is expected to enter his name in the 2021 NFL draft. Where is Jefferson's place in the history of OSU running backs? Clearly there are five contenders, between Jefferson, Ken Simonton, Jacquizz Rodgers, Steven Jackson and Yvenson Bernard. In another era, perhaps Bill Enyart makes it six.

It's hard to deny Simonton the top spot. He is the school leader in carries, yardage and touchdowns. Simonton was a leading force in helping OSU escape its three-decade dark period. But who is No. 2? Of the top five, Jefferson had by far the best yards-per-carry average at 5.69. But if that were a leading indicator, then we'd have to consider Artavis Pierce (5.80 ypc) and Ryan Nall (5.76). Rodgers was a touchdown machine, scoring 46 over three seasons. By comparison, Jefferson had 27. Jackson was a physical beast who towers over the five. - The Oregonian

Taking his first college snap after starting quarterback Tristan Gebbia limped off, Chance Nolan scored on a 1-yard, fourth-down run with 33 seconds left to give Oregon State a 41-38 upset victory over No. 9 Oregon on Friday night. Jermar Jefferson ran for 226 yards and two touchdowns to help the Beavers (2-2) win their second straight game. Jefferson has run for at least 100 yards in each of Oregon State’s four games and is on pace to hit 1,000 despite the short season.

Oregon (3-1) had won seven in a row and three straight over the rival Beavers. The loss dashed any slim hopes the Ducks had of a spot in the College Football Playoffs. The Ducks were ranked No. 15 in the first CFP rankings released Tuesday. Tristan Gebbia threw for 263 years and a score and had a touchdown run during the foggy game at Reser Stadium. While no fans were allowed in the game, cars passing near the stadium honked for the home team in the aftermath. Tyler Shough threw for 266 yards and two touchdowns for Oregon. - Oregon State/AP College Football

Oregon's defense has struggled in back-to-back-to-back weeks to stop the run, most recently allowing a career-best performance to UCLA running back Demetric Felton in last week's victory at Autzen Stadium. The culprit is as obvious to the casual observer as it is to the Ducks in the locker room. "We're going to have to work on tackling," linebacker Isaac Slade-Matautia said Tuesday afternoon before offering an honest assessment. "That's our biggest downfall right now." The No. 9 Ducks (3-0) better figure out a way to shore it up quick because this week could be their biggest challenge of the season when they take on Oregon State (1-2) and running back Jermar Jefferson at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Reser Stadium in Corvallis.

Jefferson is the leading rusher in the Pac-12 and ran roughshod against California last week to help the Beavers record their first win of the season. Jefferson, a 5-foot-10, 217-pound junior, opened the game with a 75-yard touchdown run on the first play. He finished with 196 yards on 18 carries in the 31-27 victory to bring his season total to 449 yards. He is averaging 149.7 yards per game, 7.2 yards per carry and has five rushing TDs. "He's got everything the great backs have," Oregon coach Mario Cristobal said. "It starts with great vision and then you go and start talking about his speed, his power, his explosiveness. He sets up blocks really well, he can make you miss, he can run over you, he can run through you." - Register Guard

These days, it seems like Jefferson is capable of scoring every time he touches the ball. He took the first handoff of the game 75 yards to the house. He could have done the same on his last carry, but made a smart play to run out of bounds and set the Beavers up to kneel out the game. After the damage he did Saturday, Jefferson is now the Pac-12's leading rusher. His 449 yards are 118 more than any other player has. He is averaging 7.2 yards per carry, good for 13th in the nation. Of the 12 players ahead of him, only two have a similarly high number of carries.

Jefferson said that before his long first-quarter touchdown, Gebbia checked the play to the weak side. As soon as the quarterback did that, Jefferson said he knew he was going to score because of what he saw in the defense. He has always been a smart, physical runner who is capable of delivering big plays out of nowhere. But at the moment, it seems Jefferson is playing with more confidence than ever and has taken his game to another level. - Gazette Times

Oregon State's Jermar Jefferson is coming off a sophomore season where he ran for 685 yards and eight touchdowns. Not terrible, but not what Jefferson had in mind following a record-setting freshman year in 2018. Injuries and health played a big role in Jefferson's production decrease. So shortly after the 2019 season ended, Jefferson went to work on a game plan. Jefferson's big problem, it turned out, was simple. Eat. Eat more. What college boy doesn't like to eat, and eat a lot? Jefferson, for one. It's not that he was opposed to food. Just wasn't a priority. "I was barely eating twice a day," Jefferson said of his diet in 2019. "Honestly, I don't know why. I just wasn't hungry, I guess."

Jefferson said it's ideal for him to weigh around 215 to 217 pounds during the season. Jefferson struggled to maintain that weight last season, which he felt went back to his eating habits. OSU's strength and conditioning staff reviewed Jefferson's food intake, and told him it's simply not enough. What Jefferson was eating was OK - he says fast food was only a meal or two a week, though he's trying to cut that to zero - he just needs more of it. Now Jefferson is eating three meals a day, and then some with addition of snacks. His calorie intake has increased significantly. - The Oregonian

Jefferson opened his career with 1,380 rushing yards as a freshman in 2018, setting the Oregon State single-season record for a true freshman. His 254 yards that season against Arizona State stands as the second-best single-game mark in program history. - Oregon State Football

Few Beavers have a clearer path to a starting role than Jermar Jefferson. The junior running back is a two-year starter, who when healthy, is one of the Pac-12?s top offensive threats for 2020. During the 2018 season, Jefferson ran for a freshman school-record 1,380 yards. Last year Jefferson battled injuries, but still had moments on the way to a 685-yard season. With Artavis Pierce gone to the Chicago Bears training camp, Jefferson becomes the centerpiece to OSU's offense. Jefferson is a proven runner who only needs to improve his blocking and pass receiving skills to become one of the country's top running backs. - The Oregonian

2019 PRESEASON DOAK WALKER AWARD CANDIDATE: Jermar Jefferson (So.), Oregon State,...Jefferson, who was added to the Doak Walker Award candidate list last year during the course of the season, earned Freshman All-America honors in 2018. The Harbor City, Calif., native rushed for an NCAA freshman leading 1,380 yards, which also marked the sixth-most overall in a single season in OSU history.

The sociology major amassed 254 yards, the second-highest total in Beaver football history for a game, at Arizona State. Additionally, he posted the fourth-best mark in school history with a 238-yard outing vs. Southern Utah. He also became the first player in OSU history to score four touchdowns in two games in a single season. Jefferson, the 2018 Pac-12 Conference Offensive Freshman of the Year, is one of 14 sophomores on the 71-player initial Watch List. - Oregon State Football
