Oregon's defense has struggled in back-to-back-to-back weeks to stop the run, most recently allowing a career-best performance to UCLA running back Demetric Felton in last week's victory at Autzen Stadium. The culprit is as obvious to the casual observer as it is to the Ducks in the locker room. "We're going to have to work on tackling," linebacker Isaac Slade-Matautia said Tuesday afternoon before offering an honest assessment. "That's our biggest downfall right now." The No. 9 Ducks (3-0) better figure out a way to shore it up quick because this week could be their biggest challenge of the season when they take on Oregon State (1-2) and running back Jermar Jefferson at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Reser Stadium in Corvallis.

Jefferson is the leading rusher in the Pac-12 and ran roughshod against California last week to help the Beavers record their first win of the season. Jefferson, a 5-foot-10, 217-pound junior, opened the game with a 75-yard touchdown run on the first play. He finished with 196 yards on 18 carries in the 31-27 victory to bring his season total to 449 yards. He is averaging 149.7 yards per game, 7.2 yards per carry and has five rushing TDs. "He's got everything the great backs have," Oregon coach Mario Cristobal said. "It starts with great vision and then you go and start talking about his speed, his power, his explosiveness. He sets up blocks really well, he can make you miss, he can run over you, he can run through you." - Register Guard
