  11/07/21 - Chandler MorrisrSr/2026, Virginia, 6-0, 192 (DS#27 QB) + More +

Gary Patterson wasn't on the sideline at a TCU game for the first time since 1997. The former Horned Frogs coach was watching from somewhere, and feeling proud. Chandler Morris threw for 461 yards and two touchdowns in his first start for TCU and the Frogs beat No. 14 Baylor 30-28 on Saturday, six days after Patterson and the school mutually agreed to immediately part ways before completing his 21st season as head coach. "It was huge. I mean, I don't know a team more deserving just everything we've been through this week obviously with Coach P, and we were fighting for him," Morris said. "I mean, we deserved it. And I truly believe that." TCU (4-5, 2-4 Big 12) ended a three-game losing streak, and had lost five of its six previous games. The Frogs are now 22-22 since the start of 2018.

Baylor (7-2, 4-2, No. 12 CFP), which had its three-game winning streak snapped, was driving and past midfield after the Frogs missed a field goal attempt when linebacker Shadrach Banks intercepted a pass thrown by Gerry Bohanon with 1:03 left. "Yesssssssssssssssss! Go Frogs!," Patterson tweeted after the game. He showed up at practice this week, but said he wouldn't attend the game. Bohanon finished 14-of-20 passing for 214 yards with three TDs and two interceptions, and Abram Smith ran for 125 yards to go over 1,000 yards this season for Baylor. Tyquan Thornton had five catches for 121 yards and two TDs. - TCU/AP College Football

Kennesaw State hosts Monmouth in the season finale in two weeks. Monmouth led 31-21 at halftime before Muskett hit Moore and Wright for third-quarter touchdowns and a 45-27 lead heading into the fourth.   Tony Muskett threw for 246 yards and a pair of scores and Monmouth never trailed in a 35-16 win over North Carolina A&T on Saturday. With the win, the Hawks (5-3, 4-0) remain atop the Big South conference standing with Kennesaw State. Muskett threw a 12-yard score to Joey Aldarelli with 8:37 left in the first quarter, and then threw a 29-yard score to Lonnie Moore with 1:35 left in the first. The Aggies closed within 14-7 on Jah-Maine Martin's 3-yard scoring run, and later, within 21-16 following a safety and Jalen Fowler's 4-yard scoring pass to Nick Dobson just before halftime. But Muskett's 1-yard scoring run late in third made it a 12-point contest and North Carolina A&T (3-5, 2-3) never recovered. Fowler threw for 215 yards and a touchdown and Martin gained 97 yards on 16 carries and a touchdown. It was the first-ever meeting between the two schools. - AP College Football

  09/25/21 - Chris TyreerSr/2025, Virginia, 5-09, 192 (DS#66 WR) + More +

Chris Tyree returned a kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown and Drew Pyne threw a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter in relief of an injured Jack Coan, helping No. 12 Notre Dame beat No. 18 Wisconsin 41-13 on Saturday at Soldier Field. Brian Kelly became the winningest coach in Notre Dame history with victory No. 105, surpassing Knute Rockne in his 12th season with the Irish (4-0). Graham Mertz threw four interceptions for Wisconsin (1-2), including two that were returned for touchdowns in the final 2:30 to blow the game open.

Coan, a Wisconsin transfer, left with an apparent left leg injury in the third quarter with the game tied at 10. Pyne lost a fumble on his second possession, leading to a field goal by the Badgers, but otherwise the redshirt freshman was solid, going 6 for 8 for 81 yards. Coan played 22 games for Wisconsin over three seasons and was the starter for the 2019 team that reached the Big Ten championship game. He broke his foot in the runup to the abbreviated Big Ten season last year and Mertz claimed the starting job. A highly rated 2019 recruit, Mertz had some ups and downs in 2020, but Coan could see where things were headed and transferred to Notre Dame. The Irish were in need of an experienced quarterback as they replaced Ian Book and Coan has turned out to be a solid fit. Playing behind an offensive line that has used four left tackles so far this season, Coan completed 15 of 29 passes for 158 yards and a touchdown. He was sacked five times. He limped off the field, favoring his left leg, midway through the third quarter and went to the injury tent, and then the locker room. - Notre Dame/AP College Football

  08/16/21 - Dontayvion WicksrJr/2023, Virginia, 6-1, 206 (DS#24 WR) + More +

Marques Hagans see Dontayvion Wicks as an All-ACC-caliber wide receiver. The redshirt sophomore's stat sheet shows that he has just three catches in his college career, the last one coming on Nov. 23, 2019, but Wicks' talent is undeniable. After missing 2020 due to injury, Wicks is fully healthy, and he stole the show in the team's spring game when he torched the team's defensive backs with smooth route running and effortless speed. "I told him, 'My biggest disappointment is if I don't get him to maximize the ability that he has,'" Hagans, UVa's wide receivers coach, said. "If I don't get him to see what I see in him, then I failed him as a coach." Hagans pushes all his players to maximize their ability, but he also understands that some players possess better physical tools than others. At 6-foot-1 and 205 pounds, Wicks boasts good size and impressive speed and quickness that many receivers on the roster simply can't match.

Wicks might not headline UVa's group of receivers, but he's an obvious choice for a breakout season. He's so talented that head coach Bronco Mendenhall expects him to fill the shoes of 6-7 Lavel Davis Jr., who will miss at least most of the 2021 season as he recovers from an ACL injury. Davis Jr. snagged 20 receptions for 515 yards and five touchdowns as a freshman. The uber-athletic wide receiver served as the team's best downfield threat, averaging 25.75 yards per reception. "We don't have anyone else that's 6-7," Mendenhall said Friday, "but we do have Dontayvion Wicks back, so we basically traded. He had two or three or four long catches today. I like that. I'd rather have them both." - Charlottesville Daily Progress

  08/05/21 - Cam RossrSr/2026, Virginia, 5-10, 186 (DS#70 WR) + More +

On a young UConn football team two years ago, freshman wide receivers Cam Ross and Matt Drayton stood out as promising newcomers. Ross, now a 5 foot 9 sophomore, led the Huskies with 60 catches and 723 receiving yards. The Delaware native was second nationally among freshman in catches per game and total receptions. Drayton, a 6-1 native of Jacksonville, Fla., caught 21 balls for 278 yards and two touchdowns. Now in their second seasons, and third year overall at UConn after the Huskies opted out of the 2020 season, both are likely to be leaned on as top playmakers on offense.

"The big thing is, we were young two years ago," wide receiver coach Aaron Smith said. "We've aged a little bit, a little bit more maturity from the Xs-and-Os standpoint, and they understand how to work. That comes with age, and they've done it together. For the past two years, they've grown together, they've worked together, they've studied football together. That's been a big deal with the cohesion of that group and the development of that group - they've all done it together." Ross played largely out of the slot in 2019, and made plays in between the hashes using quick feet and speed. Against Eastern Carolina, he scored on a 94-yard catch-and-run pass from classmate Jack Zergiotis after gaining separation across the middle and outracing a defender down the field. In the year since he last played, Ross said he's been working to improve "everything." "Any weakness that I had, I tried to correct," he said. "Whether it's my game, whether it's mental, I've just been trying to get on everything. Every day, you at least want to come to this facility and do something. Every day you want to work on some kind of aspect." - Hartford Courant

  08/02/21 - Mandy AlonsorSr/2022, Virginia, 6-2, 285 (DS#77 DT) + More +

Agrueling nine-week summer conditioning period came to an end Friday morning for the Virginia football team when redshirt senior defensive lineman Mandy Alonso pulled a sledgehammer over his head and slammed it down to "break the rock." Teammates showered Alonso in Gatorade at the center of the McCue practice field, enjoying a moment of celebration after an offseason focused on hard work and improvement.

Alonso, who opted to return for a final season of eligibility, was chosen as the player to break the rock thanks to a productive offseason. "Mandy is unbelievable," junior linebacker Nick Jackson said. "If you could watch him every workout, you'd be in awe." Alonso is among the contingent of players that UVa coaches want to take a step forward. The team returns key upperclassmen at nearly every position, but the Cavaliers went just 5-5 last season and ended the year with a disheartening 33-15 loss at Virginia Tech. Alonso, like many of his peers, has been a solid option for UVa in his career. He's looking to go from solid to dynamic. Everyone inside the program expects a leap forward from the defensive end with 27 career starts to his name. "That dude has come back with a purpose," Virginia strength coach Shawn Griswold said. - Roanoke Times

  07/25/21 - Keytaon ThompsonrSr/2023, Virginia, 6-4, 218 (DS#47 WR) + More +

Keytaon Thompson's first season at UVa ended with a loss to Virginia Tech. To make matters worse, he also suffered a meaningful injury in the team's 33-15 loss to the Hokies. "I broke my ribs in that last game," Thompson said Wednesday at the ACC Kickoff. "That was really painful. I couldn't move. I couldn't work out for a nice amount of time after the game." Thompson shared that he returned to 100% health about a month ago. He's been able to work out while less than 100%, but he feels fully healthy now as the final remnants of pain fade away.

"I've been able to work out for a long, long time," Thompson said. "I've been working out and doing stuff. Still had a little pain. No surgery, so they have to heal naturally. It's just dealing with the pain. It's pretty much subsided all the way." The second-year UVa player, who transferred to Virginia from Mississippi State, is expected to play an important role within Virginia's offense this fall. The Cavaliers plan to use Thompson at numerous offensive positions, including quarterback and wide receiver. He accounted for over 300 yards of total offense and six touchdowns last season. "I can do whatever you need me to do," Thompson said. "That's the whole idea." - Charlottesville Daily Progress

  06/09/21 - Artie HenryrSr/2022, Virginia, 5-11, 178 (DS#238 WR) + More +

It may be the offseason, but the past week was a fairly busy one for the Virginia football team's roster construction. Bronco Mendenhall and company received two verbal commitments from high school prospects in the last seven days and officially added Artie Henry III, a graduate transfer wide receiver from Marshall. Henry III, who has one year of eligibility remaining, played in 22 games for Marshall. He finished his career with the Thundering Herd with 42 receptions for 504 yards and six touchdowns. Prior to playing at Marshall, Henry III spent two seasons at San Diego Mesa Junior College, where he caught 25 passes for 505 yards and four touchdowns. A three-star receiver coming out of high school, Henry III returned kicks in high school, junior college and one year at Marshall due to injuries at punt returner. He ran track in high school, and speed and agility seem to be his strengths. - Charlottesville Daily Progress
