 Dontayvion Wicks, Virginia, Player News

He was disappointed, but not deterred. Still, Dontayvion Wicks said he needed a pause on the heels of his underwhelming first half of the fall. "There was a lot of reflection and I knew I had to hold myself accountable," the standout Virginia wide receiver said Tuesday. The subdued feeling Wicks had earlier this month during the Cavaliers' bye week and at the midway point of their season was unfamiliar to him, especially considering he spent the previous year as one of the nation's premier pass-catchers while setting the school record for receiving yards in a campaign and having his 21.1 yards per reception top the Atlantic Coast Conference. He logged six 100-yard games, and was a key cog in the Hoos' then pass-happy offense. All he knew was success, so his struggles through transition into UVa's new balanced attack, which requires more attention to detail from its wide receivers, challenged Wicks.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pounder, who was an All-ACC first-team selection in 2021, labored to adapt, but didn't find the same level of production or impact as he experienced the year before, and uncharacteristically, he had trouble catching the ball. "At that point we had 39 drops," Cavaliers offensive coordinator Des Kitchings said, "and I think he had a large number of those, so there [was] some self-reflection and trying to eliminate that." Said Wicks: "It was just clearing my mind, like letting everything go and putting everything behind me to just focus on what's next and having to get better. I had to not worry about what happened and what was going on. I just had to play." - Charlottesville Daily Progress

Marques Hagans see Dontayvion Wicks as an All-ACC-caliber wide receiver. The redshirt sophomore's stat sheet shows that he has just three catches in his college career, the last one coming on Nov. 23, 2019, but Wicks' talent is undeniable. After missing 2020 due to injury, Wicks is fully healthy, and he stole the show in the team's spring game when he torched the team's defensive backs with smooth route running and effortless speed. "I told him, 'My biggest disappointment is if I don't get him to maximize the ability that he has,'" Hagans, UVa's wide receivers coach, said. "If I don't get him to see what I see in him, then I failed him as a coach." Hagans pushes all his players to maximize their ability, but he also understands that some players possess better physical tools than others. At 6-foot-1 and 205 pounds, Wicks boasts good size and impressive speed and quickness that many receivers on the roster simply can't match.

Wicks might not headline UVa's group of receivers, but he's an obvious choice for a breakout season. He's so talented that head coach Bronco Mendenhall expects him to fill the shoes of 6-7 Lavel Davis Jr., who will miss at least most of the 2021 season as he recovers from an ACL injury. Davis Jr. snagged 20 receptions for 515 yards and five touchdowns as a freshman. The uber-athletic wide receiver served as the team's best downfield threat, averaging 25.75 yards per reception. "We don't have anyone else that's 6-7," Mendenhall said Friday, "but we do have Dontayvion Wicks back, so we basically traded. He had two or three or four long catches today. I like that. I'd rather have them both." - Charlottesville Daily Progress

When Lavel Davis Jr. suffered a torn ACL this spring, Virginia's football team lost its most-anticipated deep threat at wide receiver. Saturday, during the Cavaliers' spring game, the team showed it has a replacement getting ready. Sophomore Dontayvion Wicks, who missed last season with a Lisfranc fracture in his right foot, had a breakout day at Scott Stadium, showing off his speed and athleticism during the two-hour practice. "We always knew he was special," said quarterback Brennan Armstrong. "Now, it's just him getting on the field. Obviously today, he made a lot of good plays down the field."

Wicks's big day included hauling in a 40-yard deep ball, making a jumping catch for a reception on a slant route over the middle and toasting a defensive back with a double move for a 20-yard touchdown. UVa coach Bronco Mendenhall said the offensive coaching staff went into Saturday planning to get Wicks heavily involved. Wide receiver Ra'Shaun Henry, who's been one of the team's top receivers this spring, was unavailable, and the Cavaliers didn't use receiver Billy Kemp IV or tight end Jelani Woods extensively during the scrimmage periods. Wicks said he knew that was the plan going into the spring game. "It's just normal to me because I know I can go out and make plays," said Wicks. "And that's what I have to do to get to where I want to be." - Roanoke Times
