Tyler Badie is gone. Now Missouri has to figure out what to do next. Of all the losses after the 2021 season, the SEC's leading rusher graduating and heading to the Baltimore Ravens might have hurt the most for the Tigers. Badie was the centerpiece of MU's offensive attack, and replacing him will be no easy feat. With fall camp and the season coming up fast, here's a look at the Missouri running backs group as it currently stands.

One of the leading contenders for Badie's spot is Nathaniel Peat, a Rock Bridge product who transferred to Missouri from Stanford during the offseason. Peat played in the Tigers' spring game, rushing for 30 yards and a touchdown. Last season with the Cardinal, he led the team in rushing yards with 404, also scoring three touchdowns on the ground. He also led the Pac-12 with 663 yards on kickoff returns. Peat left Rock Bridge as the program's leading rusher, with 4,448 total yards. - Columbia Daily Tribune

Luther Burden III has been in Columbia for several months now, adapting to his new surroundings. He'd be like every other college freshman, a little nervous to be away from his family. It's different for Burden, though. He's the hope of Eli Drinkwitz and Missouri football, the wide receiver from St. Louis who fans expect to become an all-time Tigers great after spurning Oklahoma, Georgia and Alabama for MU.

Burden said he doesn't go out much around Columbia, but when he does, he sometimes gets recognized by the public. For some, the attention could get stressful, but Burden said he's handling it well. "It's a good feeling," he said. "Just for you to go outside and someone knows you and recognizes who you are, everybody wants that. It's a good feeling." His name is already renowned as the anticipation grows toward his first collegiate football game on Sept. 1 at home against Louisiana Tech. Tigers fans understand the potential is limitless. Todd and Ashley Good were the first to arrive at Burden's signing event with their six-year-old son Breven in tow for a chance to meet Missouri's fourth-ever five-star recruit. Ty'Ron Hopper transferred to Missouri from Florida this offseason, after being expected to earn a starting spot with the Gators for 2022. He joined his cousin Tyrone Hopper, a defensive lineman for the Tigers who transferred from North Carolina. Hopper made 65 tackles last season for Florida, starting four starts. Ten of the tackles were for loss. The 6'2", 220 pound senior from Shelby, North Carolina also had 3.5 sacks and forced a fumble. Chad Bailey started eight games last year for the Tigers, earning more time on the field after Jamie Pettway transferred out of the program. Bailey showed an ability to shed blocks, an area where other Missouri players struggled last season. The senior from Missouri City, Texas finished the 2021 campaign with 46 total tackles, 5.5 of them for loss. He also contributed a sack and two fumble recoveries.

Bailey is expected to maintain his starting spot on the weak side. He and Ty'Ron Hopper will be key contributors as the Tigers look to improve their overall defensive performance under new coordinator Blake Baker, formerly Missouri's safeties coach. Missouri has added another Power 5 reinforcement from the NCAA transfer portal, securing a commitment Tuesday from former Oregon defensive tackle Kristian Williams. The 2019 recruit entered the portal in May and visited Mizzou's campus this past weekend. The Memphis native was a three-star prospect in 2019 and held a Mizzou scholarship offer from former coach Barry Odom's staff. He comes to MU with three years of remaining eligibility. With Missouri beginning individual skill instruction and with fall camp opening July 31, the time is coming for him to decide on the team's starting quarterback. With four-star freshman Sam Horn in town after completing his high school baseball season, Drinkwitz finally has the pieces in place to make an informed choice. The contenders: Horn and fellow newcomer Jack Abraham, plus Brady Cook and Tyler Macon, who each started games for the Tigers last season in place of 2021's regular starter Connor Bazelak. "I think I've been very clear since the start of spring that I would not name a starter until Sam Horn had the opportunity to compete for that position," Drinkwitz said during a Thursday press conference. "That is ongoing and starting right now." The complicating factor for Horn is the upcoming Major League Baseball Draft.

A two-sport star in high school, who didn't enroll early at MU due to his roundball obligations, Horn will be taken at some point in the July 17-19 draft. Depending on how high he goes and the money involved, Horn may well choose baseball. "I am not naive to the fact that Sam is going to have a difficult decision in front of him in mid-July," Drinkwitz said. With last year's primary starter, Connor Bazelak, gone after transferring to Indiana in the offseason, Tiger head coach Eli Drinkwitz will have a choice to make. As it currently stands, Drinkwitz will have five quarterbacks on the roster to choose from. After Bazelak threw for just 65 yards and an interception against Arkansas, Eli Drinkwitz reopened Missouri's quarterback competition. When the Tigers lined up against Army in the Armed Forces Bowl, it was Cook who got the start. Cook performed adequately in the loss, showing off a mobility Bazelak never did. He completed 27 of 34 passes and a touchdown and ran for 53 yards and another score on nine carries.

Despite his best efforts, Missouri lost the game on an Army field goal as time expired. "I thought he played really well. Very calm, collected," Drinkwitz said of Cook after the bowl game. "I thought he had great composure, did a really nice job on that last drive to give us a chance to win the game." Cook came to Missouri from St. Louis, where he attended Chaminade High School. He left high school as a three-star prospect before seeing action in three games as a true freshman in 2020 before playing in five during the 2021 campaign. He finished last season with 345 passing yards and two touchdowns through the air. He rushed for 93 total yards. In Missouri's spring game, he threw for 191 yards, three touchdowns and an interception, completing 16 of 20 passes according to the unofficial stats. - Columbia Daily Tribune

Missouri football needed to add a veteran quarterback this offseason, coach Eli Drinkwitz felt. Sifting through the NCAA transfer portal, Drinkwitz and his staff landed former Mississippi State and Southern Miss quarterback Jack Abraham. "Our quarterback room has two younger guys on it," Drinkwitz said at the SEC spring meetings. "We were looking for somebody with some experience...In our first six games, we have three on the road and three in really difficult environments." When it comes to experience, Abraham has a significant amount across college football.

Abraham didn't play at Mississippi State because he was out all year with a concussion. He received a medical hardship waiver to be immediately eligible for this season. Abraham will be part of a quarterback competition at Missouri ahead of a schedule that will include road trips to Kansas State, Auburn and Florida in about the first month of the 2022 season. "I felt like for the sake of our team, we needed to make sure we have enough firepower in that room, and look forward to seeing all four of those guys really compete," Drinkwitz said. - The Clarion Ledger

Jack Abrahams was granted a medical hardship by the NCAA after the season and entered the transfer portal. After flirtations with Ole Miss and Maryland, he landed in Columbia. "I've seen Jack just stay positive throughout all of it and just keep on believing that good things were going to happen for him and keep working at it," Cutcliffe said. "I think he's got an unbelievable opportunity at Missouri to finish the story of his college career." Still, nothing will come easy for Abraham in Columbia. Even with his years of experience, the 24-year-old remains a walk-on and will have to compete for any playing time he receives.

Abraham has not shied away from the competition and told the Tribune he wants to win the job. According to his former coaches, he will be helped by his experience and accuracy as a passer, plus the ability to anticipate how a play will work. Cutcliffe and Hill said they wouldn't bet against Abraham leading Missouri through the 2022 season. However it goes, they said he will have Oxford behind him. He might even be easier for his hometown to cheer for, now that he's not playing for a hated in-state rival. "He was going to convert a lot of Ole Miss fans to Mississippi State fans if he were to land that job," Hill said. "That really speaks to his character. Drinkwitz was bound and determined to add another arm to Mizzou's QB room and he did that by grabbing the well-traveled Abraham as a preferred walk-on. It's been a circuitous career for Abraham, who signed with Louisiana Tech in 2016, later transferred to Northwest Mississippi Community College, started two seasons at Southern Miss and then sat out last year at Mississippi State due to post-concussion syndrome. Get all that! Abraham led the nation in completion percentage in 2018 (73.1 percent) and threw 41 touchdowns over three years. He also tossed 29 picks and battled multiple injuries. Missouri's quarterback competition has a new arm. A much older arm. But a better arm? That answer will reveal itself soon enough. Former Louisiana Tech, Southern Miss and Mississippi State quarterback Jack Abraham committed to the Tigers on Sunday after visiting the campus over the weekend, he told the Post-Dispatch. He formally announced his transfer plans Monday on social media. Abraham, Southern Miss' starter from 2018-20, will initially join Mizzou as a walk-on with a chance to earn a scholarship for the 2022 season, his seventh season in college football. "Whether or not (a scholarship) works out, that's not what I'm coming for," Abraham said. "I'm coming for the opportunity to compete and play at the next level. So that's the opportunity I was given. I think it's the best decision that I've made up to this point. I'm fired up."

A Missouri staff that struck out three times with established transfer quarterbacks this offseason delivered a simple message to Abraham: "They're looking for a guy to come in with experience," he said. There's no doubt he delivers experience. Abraham attempted 859 career passes over three seasons at Southern Miss (2018-20), compared to 82 career passes for Mizzou's two returning quarterbacks, Brady Cook and Tyler Macon. - Post-Dispatch

Mississippi State quarterback Jack Abraham has a new home. The former Southern Miss signee announced on Monday that he is headed to Missouri. Abraham will be a walk-on with an opportunity to earn a scholarship after making the second move of his career, according to St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Dave Matter. Abraham transferred to Mississippi State this season after three years at Southern Miss. He didn't play a game after suffering a concussion and facial laceration during a "freak accident" in 2021. During his three years at Southern Miss, Abraham completed 69.3% of his passes for 7,067 yards and 41 yards. Now, he's transferring for the second time in his career. He arrived at Southern Miss as a three-star recruit and the No. 29 recruit in the state of Mississippi. Mississippi State returns Will Rogers, one of the nation's top passers, for the 2022 season. Former Baylor defensive lineman Josh Landry made the announcement on his Twitter page that he'll be transferring to the Missouri Tigers. Last year, the Houston, Texas native tallied five tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and one sack for the Bears. He suited up in 10 games during the 2021-2022 season. During his sophomore season with Baylor, Landry started four out of seven games during the 2020 season. He racked up 12 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, one sack, and a blocked kick in his sophomore campaign. In high school, he suited up for Lamar High School (Houston, Texas). As a senior, he guided the team to a 9-2 overall record and racked up 46 tackles and 5.5 sacks during the 2017 season.
