  10/22/20 - Carlo KempSr/2021, Michigan, 6-3, 281 (DS#23 DT) + More +

Michigan's football team has its captains for the 2020 season. Head coach Jim Harbaugh revealed the seven players selected as captains Monday night on the "Inside Michigan Football" radio show: fifth-year senior defensive tackle Carlo Kemp, senior defensive end Kwity Paye, fifth-year senior center Andrew Vastardis, fifth-year senior tight end Nick Eubanks, redshirt junior linebacker Josh Ross, senior fullback Ben Mason and junior defensive end Aidan Hutchinson. The seven captains are the most in program history. "All those guys are just very deserving, top-shelf players and leaders," Harbaugh said. Kemp has started 25 games during his Michigan career and is entering his second season as a team captain. - Ann Arbor News

  10/22/20 - Nico CollinsSr/2021, Michigan, 6-4, 215 (DS#13 WR) + More +

Michigan's football team isn't ready to close the door on a potential return, but receiver Nico Collins won't be suiting up this week for the Wolverines. Nor, it appears, anytime soon. Head coach Jim Harbaugh told reporters on Monday that Collins, a two-time all-Big Ten honorable mention who was forecasted to be Michigan's top option in 2020, "is not participating in football right now." "And I don't have a crystal ball as to if his mind would change or not," Harbaugh said. "But I know he's not currently on the team." Michigan recently updated its roster to reflect changes, including Collins' decision not to play in 2020. Reports say the 6-foot-4, 222-pound wideout hired an agent and has started the process required to declare for the 2021 NFL Draft. - Ann Arbor News

  10/22/20 - Charles ThomasrSo/2024, Michigan, 5-11, 238 (DS#999 ILB) + More +

The Michigan football team could have another departure on its hands, this time at the already inexperienced linebacker position. Redshirt freshman Charles Thomas has entered his name into the NCAA's transfer portal, indicating a preference to leave Michigan, team spokesman Dave Ablauf confirmed to MLive on Monday. Thomas, who appeared in two games for the Wolverines in 2019, is no longer listed on Michigan's team roster for 2020. The 6-foot, 238-pound Thomas was a three-star recruit after attending St. Thomas More (Oakdale, Conn.), IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) and Langston Hughes High School in Fairburn, Ga. He has four years of eligibility remaining. Entering the transfer portal allows coaches from other schools to pursue Thomas, who could decide to return. Should Thomas depart, it'd leave Michigan with 11 scholarship linebackers, four of them true freshmen. He is the first player from Michigan's highly-ranked 2019 recruiting class to enter the the transfer portal, and third player this offseason, joining 2020 members Aaron Lewis and Osman Savage, a four-star linebacker from Baltimore, Md. - Ann Arbor News

  10/16/20 - Kwity PayeSr/2021, Michigan, 6-3, 261 (DS#1 DE) + More +

The 2020 season is sure to present its own set of challenges, with the Wolverines set to debut a new starting quarterback and four new starters up front. Growing pains could be in the forecast again for the offense. But the defense, particularly up front, is emerging as a potential strength of the team, head coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday night. "Kwity Paye and Aidan Hutchinson, two wow-tremendous players," Harbaugh said on the "Inside Michigan Football" radio show. "They're having great camps. When I kind of look over, that's what I see the identity for our defense."

Paye and Hutchinson, both defensive ends, have received heavy praise from coaches and teammates this offseason for their improved play and smash mouth style. Hutchinson, a junior and third-team all-Big Ten selection in 2019, says he's trying to become "a matchup nightmare." Paye, a second-team all-conference selection, has made a concerted effort to improve his edge rushing. "Just those two talented, great, high-effort type of players," Harbaugh continued, describing the depth of Michigan's defensive line. "Caro Kemp and Chris Hinton, and now Donovan Jeter also is really, really surging and doing great. Just a natural, great football player." - Ann Arbor News

  10/16/20 - Shea PattersonSr/2020, Michigan, 6-1, 212 (DS#18 QB) + More +

Shea Patterson will be returning to a TV screen near you soon. The former Michigan quarterback who went undrafted in 2020 and failed to catch on with an NFL team has agreed to play this fall in The Spring League, a developmental football league launched in 2017. The six-team league is set to begin a five-week schedule beginning Oct. 27, with a handful of games selected to air nationally on Fox Sports 1. Patterson is one of two quarterbacks on the "Blues" roster, and opens against the "Alphas" and former Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett ... well known to Michigan fans. Patterson, who has family in the San Antonio area, was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in May. He was waived in July, and has since had a workout with the Houston Texas. At Michigan, Patterson threw for 5,661 yards and 45 touchdowns (and 15 interceptions) while completing 60 percent of his throws. He was a third-team all-Big Ten selection in 2019 and earned an invite to the Senior Bowl. - Ann Arbor News

  10/11/20 - Chris EvansrSr/2021, Michigan, 5-11, 211 (DS#21 RB) + More +

This is where the 5-11, 216-pound Evans could be the difference-maker. Not only can he run for big yardage, but he adds his pass-catching dimension. "Chris is just different than a standard back," Harbaugh said. "A guy like Chris, who can beat the majority of linebackers or safeties he runs a route on and then who can make the play and catch the ball, that adds a little bit different element to where you can start including the running back in a progression for the quarterback of having that ball go to him first or second and be excited about it. "That part is different and really being able to run different types of runs. He's so comfortable in space that the different perimeter-type of stuff, he's not the fastest guy ever, but he plays fast and he's elusive in space. Being able to have a guy who excels outside the tackles helps balance out Zach and Hassan, who are good out there, but they're special inside the box." - Detroit News

  10/10/20 - Quinn NordinrSr/2021, Michigan, 6-1, 193 (DS#4 K) + More +

How Michigan kicker Quinn Nordin finished last season was a perfect 10. Nordin was on a hot streak making his final 10 field goals after he had emerged as the starter for good late in the season at Maryland. He kicked the final five games, taking over for Jake Moody, who had taken over the job from Nordin late in the 2018 season. Those final 10 kicks last season by Nordin included a 57-yarder against Alabama in the Citrus Bowl. But as the Wolverines prepare for their abbreviated season that opens Oct. 24 at Minnesota, Michigan special teams coordinator Jay Harbaugh isn't ready to crown a starting kicker.

"We love the way he finished last year," Harbaugh said of Nordin. "We love the way he's been practicing. You're going to put the guy out there that gives you the best chance to win. More than likely, history would say that would be Quinn, but we've still got a lot of time in terms of kicking in competitive situations and moving the ball in practices and letting both those guys kick. "We love everything about both of them. We all love the fact Quinn's done it on some big stages and he's got the experience and poise of a veteran. Moody does, too. It's a good situation overall, and we'll let the competition play out." - Detroit News

  10/09/20 - *Christopher HintonJr/2022, Michigan, 6-4, 304 (DS#19 DT) + More +

Hinton, a four-star prospect from Johns Creek, Ga., comes from a football family. His father, Chris Sr., is a former eight-time NFL all-pro offensive lineman. His brother, Myles, is on scholarship at Stanford. Expectations, as you could imagine, were high. But as the 2019 season wore on, it became apparent that Michigan needed the 6-foot-4, 305-pound lineman. Hinton played extensively in the Wolverines' win over Maryland, then posted a six-tackle game against Ohio State. His first start came against Alabama in the Citrus Bowl. "Personally, for me, it's like night and day," Hinton said. "This year, coming back from quarantine, I just feel so much more comfortable on the field (and) off the field. More confident on the field (and) off the field. "That freshman year, coming to a new area, a new state, a new situation - it can take some time to adjust, so I had to adjust. But now I feel like I've adjusted, so I'm ready to rock and roll." - Ann Arbor News

  10/09/20 - Gemon GreenrSr/2023, Michigan, 6-1, 183 (DS#53 CB) + More +

Last week, just as Michigan's football team was getting ready to put on the pads, Don Brown acknowledged the need to find a second starting cornerback. Ambry Thomas has departed to begin preparing for the NFL draft, forcing the Wolverines to turn to a group of inexperienced underclassmen. Brown, Michigan's defensive coordinator, on Monday revealed the early frontrunner during an interview on the "Inside Michigan Football" radio show. "I think Gemon Green's done a good job there," Brown said. "I would say he's probably the leader in the clubhouse right now."

Green, a redshirt sophomore from DeSoto, Texas, appeared in 11 games last season. Most of his time was spent on special teams, where he racked up five tackles. But the 6-foot-2, 181-pound Green has the early lead over D.J. Turner and Jalen Perry, two others up for the starting role. "Gemon Green's really played well," Brown said. "He's a guy that's been with us for a period of time. Always had the athletic ability. Conceptually, he's kind of put it all together so we feel really good about him." - Ann Arbor News

  10/07/20 - Aidan HutchinsonSr/2022, Michigan, 6-7, 268 (DS#1 DE) + More +

Hutchinson's already garnering attention from NFL scouts, too. Over the summer, his name popped up on prospect boards for the 2021 draft, leaving Hutchinson the option to leave college if the big Ten had followed through with its plan to postpone the fall season. But now that football is back, so is Hutchinson and his shovel-and-pail work ethic that's drawn notice from others. Asked last month about Michigan's defensive line, linebacker Josh Ross said Hutchinson "was the first guy that comes to my mind." "That dude is an animal," Ross said. "Brings it every single day. Just a guy you want to be around. A leader on our team. (He's) going to have a tremendous season this year." - Ann Arbor News

  10/07/20 - Aidan HutchinsonSr/2022, Michigan, 6-7, 268 (DS#1 DE) + More +

He was vocal about his desire to play this fall, and backed up his words in early September by joining teammates, players and his head coach for a march in Ann Arbor. Now that the Big Ten has returned and Michigan set to resume play Oct. 24 at Minnesota, starting defensive end Aidan Hutchinson left little doubt about his plans. He's in - and working overtime to be better than last year. "I've been watching a lot of NFL film lately," Hutchinson said last week on the "In the Trenches" podcast. "I think it's just super helpful - more than you'll ever know." Hutchinson, listed at 6-foot-6 and 269 pounds, displays extraordinary athleticism for a player his size. He looks like a tackle but plays like an end, evident by his 68-tackle (10 for a loss), 4 1/2-sack season in 2019, his sophomore season.

It was enough to earn third-team all-Big Ten honors from the coaches, raising expectations for Hutchinson this fall. He joins fellow starter Kwity Paye, another end, and fifth-year senior Carlo Kemp as the three returning starters along Michigan's defensive line, and hopes the group can become a "matchup nightmare" for opponents. "When they bring that tight-end over, that just means a lot of guys are getting single-blocked," Hutchinson said. "So, when they bring that tight end over to me and I get double-teamed, that means Kwity probably gets single-blocked. "It's going to be scary when we get out there." - Ann Arbor News

  10/02/20 - Donovan JeterrSr/2022, Michigan, 6-3, 310 (DS#34 DT) + More +

As Michigan's football team puts on the pads this week and begins contact practices, one name to keep an eye on up front is Donovan Jeter. The redshirt junior has slowly worked his way up the Wolverines' depth chart at defensive tackle in recent years, appearing as a rotational player in 10 games during the 2019 season. Now, it appears, Jeter could be in line for a starting role. "Donovan Jeter is playing better than I ever anticipated that he could play," Michigan defensive coordinator Don Brown told reporters on Wednesday. "He has exceeded all expectations. And he and Carlo Kemp have given us solid play inside." One of the two tackle spots remain the only real mystery along the Wolverines' defensive line this fall. Aidan Hutchinson and Kwity Paye have locked up starting roles at defensive end, while fifth-year senior and defensive co-captain last year, Carlo Kemp, is a sure bet to start at tackle. If Michigan decides to play with more four-down linemen in 2020, and it appears like it plans to do just that, the 6-foot-3, 318-pound Jeter will play a role. - Ann Arbor News

  10/02/20 - Chris EvansrSr/2021, Michigan, 5-11, 211 (DS#21 RB) + More +

The Wolverines return their two top rushers from a season ago, and by all accounts both are healthy again. Expect Charbonnet to get the first crack at first-team reps, but Haskins isn't far behind. He had a strong finish to the 2019 season and could Michigan a strong 1-2 option here. Evans remains the biggest question mark in the room, having compiled more than 1,700 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns from 2016 to 2018. But he's been out of football for more than 18 months...how quickly can he regain form and acclimate to the Wolverines' spread offense? - Ann Arbor News

  10/01/20 - Willie AllenrSr/2022, Michigan, 6-5, 343 (DS#83 OT) + More +

Willie Allen's senior year couldn't get off the ground, and now he's decided to opt out of the remainder of the 2020 season. Louisiana Tech starting left tackle announced his decision via Twitter page Tuesday night. "With so much going on in this country, my health and COVID-19 impacting me personally, I have decided to opt out for the 2020 season," Allen said in a written statement. "I look forward to returning to the field in 2021." Allen, one of just two returning starting offensive linemen for the Bulldogs, has missed the first two games of the year due to COVID-19 related issues. Following a standout junior campaign in 2019 where he won the starting role during fall camp, Allen was one of Louisiana Tech's top NFL prospects heading into this season, listed at 6-6, 343. The loss of Allen is a big one for Tech, who had to replace three starters off last year's 10-win squad and is welcoming a new starting quarterback in Luke Anthony. - Monroe News Star

  10/01/20 - *Daxton HillJr/2022, Michigan, 6-0, 191 (DS#3 FS) + More +

The departure of Ambry Thomas leaves Michigan's cornerback position less experienced and thin. The Wolverines are slated to return Vincent Gray, a backup who appeared in all 13 games last season, while a group of inexperienced underclassmen are frontrunners to land the second starting spot. Could that open the door for Daxton Hill? The former five-star prospect played as a fifth defensive back, and later started at safety, as a true freshman in 2019, but his speed and athleticism make him a potential candidate to slide over and cover receivers this fall. And speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Michigan defensive coordinator Don Brown sounds open to it. "He can fit in anywhere he wants to fit in," Brown said. "That's how talented this guy is. Obviously he's a safety by trade, but he's a nickel by trade as well. "And really, that was his get-on-the-field role last year." - Ann Arbor News
