  09/30/20 - *Jalen MayfieldrSo/2021, Michigan, 6-5, 326 (DS#7 OT) + More +

Jalen Mayfield, who announced plans in August to forego his remaining three years of eligibility and declare for the NFL draft, has been granted permission to play during the abbreviated Big Ten season. Head coach Jim Harbaugh revealed the decision Monday on the "Inside Michigan Football" radio show. "Specifically with Jalen Mayfield, he did submit a waiver to be able to come back and play," Harbaugh told host Jon Jansen. "And that waiver has been granted. "I think there's a few stipulations that he has to do, but I think that waiver has been granted that he can return." Harbaugh did not disclose the stipulations, but offensive line coach Ed Warinner said he anticipates having the 6-foot-5, 320-pound Mayfield back this week as the Wolverines begin padded practices. "Everything looks good for Jalen to return," Warinner said on the show. "He's back on campus taking classes. He'll be back in action this week, helping at practice and going through the training." - Ann Arbor News

  09/24/20 - Camaron CheesemanrSr/2021, Michigan, 6-4, 239 (DS#2 LS) + More +

Michigan long snapper Camaron Cheeseman, a fifth-year senior, has decided not to play this season, he announced Wednesday on social media. "I have achieved a dream of mine I've always set out to accomplish and that was to play in the Big 10," Cheeseman wrote in a Twitter post. "I have ultimately decided I will not be returning for the 2020 football season." The Big Ten last week announced an eight-game regular season will begin Oct. 24 and there also will be a plus-one seeded divisional game. Michigan quarterback Dylan McCaffrey has decided to opt out as well as running back Christian Turner, and cornerback Ambry Thomas and receiver Nico Collins also have chosen to prepare for the NFL Draft. Right tackle Jalen Mayfield last week decided to return to Michigan after he had left and signed with an agent. "I will continue to train with the aspirations of playing at the next level for 2021," Cheeseman wrote. - Detroit News

  09/16/20 - Chris EvansrSr/2021, Michigan, 5-11, 211 (DS#21 RB) + More +

Chris Evans described a turbulent nine months as mentally draining, not knowing whether he would be accepted back at the University of Michigan. The junior running back - one who played a prominent role on the Wolverines' offense during the 2017 and 2018 seasons - had been suspended academically by the university in February. While the reason has not been shared publicly, the punishment was severe. Not only was Evans sidelined from the team, he was no longer on scholarship. Money for rent and food began drying up. "I was just sticking to what I know and grinding all the time," Evans said recently.

But instead of returning home to Indianapolis, Evans made the choice to stay in Ann Arbor and prove that he was willing to right what went wrong. He worked three jobs: As an assistant to an area carpenter in the morning; painting houses, rolling carpet and installing dry wall. Once the clock struck noon, he moved on to Ahmo's Gyros & Deli in Ann Arbor, where he delivered orders, took orders and worked the register and washed dishes. "Literally, unbelievably humble," store owner Majdi Issa told MLive. "Brings a light to the door with him. He became friends with everybody in the store. He was there for people, some of the employees that had some personal issues in his life, just to be there the shoulder to cry on and (provide) some comfort." - Ann Arbor News

  09/10/20 - Chris EvansrSr/2021, Michigan, 5-11, 211 (DS#21 RB) + More +

More than 19 months have gone by since Chris Evans last suited up in a Michigan uniform. That streak would have ended this weekend under normal circumstances, but a postponement by the Big Ten has the Wolverines running back wondering when he might play football again. Evans was on hand Saturday for a parent-led protest in Ann Arbor, attended by head coach Jim Harbaugh, hoping to convince the conference to reverse its decision. "Taking it one day at a time," Evans, who's listed at 5-foot-11 and 216 pounds, said. "Everybody working hard until we hear something new. "Whenever they say we can play, we're ready."

While most of his teammates last played on Jan. 1, Evans hasn't played a game in the maize and blue since December 2018. He was suspended by the university for most of 2019 due to academic reasons; though he's never discussed the details. The Indianapolis, Indiana, native remained in Ann Arbor during that time, helped coach football and tried to stay in shape. "Just trusting the process and getting ready to play, day in and day out," Evans said. "It's going to be tough - me being out, not being able to play football since '18. But I'll be ready to go when the time comes." - Ann Arbor News

  09/05/20 - Kwity PayeSr/2021, Michigan, 6-3, 261 (DS#1 DE) + More +

Michigan players continue to participate in voluntary practices four days a week, preparing for the program's version of the NFL combine on Oct. 24 at Michigan Stadium so players can be tested by NFL scouts. Defensive end Kwity Paye has his NFL future to consider while he continues to go through practice. Like everyone else in the program, he's curious what the Big Ten's next move will be. If the season is pushed to January, there's a strong likelihood many upperclassmen across the Big Ten who have NFL aspirations will leave to prepare for the draft. "I'm just waiting on like what decision the Big Ten and the NCAA's going to make because we don't know what's going on yet," Paye said Thursday. "I would have to obviously go back and talk to my mom and see what would be the best choice for me and my family.

"I'm not all too worried about making the big decision just yet, just because I'm trying to enjoy my last couple months with the boys if these are my last couple months with them." Before the decision to postpone was made, Paye said he paid close attention to what was going on with the Big Ten. Would the conference delay? Would it play on? "But they kept giving false hope," Paye said. "I stopped getting my hopes up and stopped looking into all that stuff. Just been doing what I had to do here to help the team. When they make their decision, I'll be ready." - Detroit News

  08/29/20 - Jordan WhittleyrSr/2022, Michigan, 6-1, 348 (DS#999 DT) + More +

Oregon State defensive tackle Jordan Whittley announced on social media Tuesday that he has a serious issue with his heart. Whittley wrote on Instagram that he has "a tumor in my heart, and the possibility of heart cancer." Multiple sources confirmed to The Oregonian/OregonLive that Whittley is currently dealing with a health issue. The 6-foot-1, 330-pound Whittley signed with Oregon State in 2019 as a junior college transfer from Laney College in Oakland. Whittley played in 11 games last season, making 14 tackles, including 3½ for a loss. Whittley was expected to be a major piece to Oregon State's defensive front this upcoming season. - The Oregonian

  08/22/20 - Ambry ThomasSr/2021, Michigan, 6-0, 191 (DS#13 CB) + More +

Michigan will be without a returning starter on defense if it returns to play early in 2021. Senior cornerback Ambry Thomas announced Thursday plans to forego his remaining collegiate eligibility and enter the 2021 NFL Draft. Thomas, a Detroit native, said he came to the decision after "long thought and numerous discussions with may parents," he wrote in a letter on social media. "This is a very difficult decision, as there is nothing I wanted to do more than to suit up in the maize and blue this fall," Thomas continued. "However, in light of the (Big Ten) season being postponed, my family and I decided that beginning to prepare for the draft is the right step to take."

The 6-foot, 183-pound Thomas flirted with the NFL last year, leaving the door open to declaring early in during the lead up to Michigan's Citrus Bowl game against Alabama. As a 13-game starter at cornerback, Thomas amassed 38 tackles (three for a loss), three interceptions, seven pass deflections and two fumble recoveries while garnering third-team all-Big Ten honors by the coaches. But he ultimately decided to return, hoping to use the 2020 season to boost his stock as part of the Wolverines' experienced defense. - Ann Arbor News
