2020 ALL-BIG TEN FOOTBALL HONORABLE MENTION (COACHES): Hassan Haskins,...Haskins leads the Michigan backfield with 375 yards on 61 carries. He has averaged 6.1 yards per rush, with just five negative yards all season and a team-high six touchdowns. Haskins has been a downhill bruiser for the Wolverines. Heading into the Big Ten Championship Weekend, he is coming off consecutive 100-yard performances against Rutgers (109 yards) and Penn State (101 yards) and needs just three rush yards to reach 1,000 in his career. - Michigan Football

  12/05/20 - Jack TuttlerSr/2025, Michigan, 6-3, 211 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Jack Tuttle threw two touchdown passes in his first career start and Indiana's defense made a stand in the final minute as the 10th-ranked Hoosiers outlasted No. 18 Wisconsin 14-6 on Saturday. Indiana's victory snapped a 10-game skid in this series and enabled the Hoosiers (6-1, CFP No. 12) to tie a program record with its sixth Big Ten victory of the season. Indiana also earned six Big Ten wins in 1967 and 1987. The Hoosiers hadn't beaten Wisconsin since 2002. Wisconsin (2-2, No. 16 CFP) drove deep into Indiana territory on its final drive, but Graham Mertz's fourth-and-10 pass to Chimere Dike from the 21 was broken up by Reese Taylor in the right corner of the end zone with 46 seconds left.

The Badgers drove inside Indiana's 40-yard line on five possessions but had just six points to show for it. Tuttle went 13 of 22 for 130 yards with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Peyton Hendershot and a 7-yard scoring strike to Whop Philyor. The Utah transfer was starting in place of Michael Penix Jr., who tore his anterior cruciate ligament last week in a 27-11 victory at Maryland. Penix had thrown for 1,645 yards and 14 touchdowns while helping Indiana win five of its first six games. - Indiana/AP College Football

  12/04/20 - Jack TuttlerSr/2025, Michigan, 6-3, 211 (DS#999 QB) + More +

For an Indiana team that has dreams of finishing off a special season with its first Big Ten title since 1967, it's a pressure spot. But those who know Tuttle best say he has a big arm and a cool demeanor. That will be put to the test, beginning at Wisconsin, then continuing with a rivalry game against Purdue, and then, possibly, the Big Ten championship game in Indianapolis if Ohio State doesn't qualify due to not reaching six games played. "He's not a get in your face kind of guy," said Brandon Huffman, a national recruiting editor for 247Sports who covered Tuttle's recruitment out of Mission Hills High in San Marcos, California. "He's not a loud, boisterous personality. He's not a guy that's going to go on Twitter and tweet every minute something motivational that somebody else wrote years ago. He's just kind of a real salt of the earth type, quiet guy who just goes about his business."

The son of former IU walk-on kicker Jay Tuttle, Jack Tuttle grew up in suburban San Diego, where by his sophomore year, he was on the radar of college programs throughout the country. He was rated a top-five pro-style quarterback nationally by both Rivals and 247Sports. Alabama coach Nick Saban recruited him. So did nearby USC. But Tuttle chose Utah, based on the pipeline of quarterbacks from the San Diego area who had success there, beginning with Alex Smith. - Herald Bulletin

  12/02/20 - Jack TuttlerSr/2025, Michigan, 6-3, 211 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Redshirt sophomore Jack Tuttle made his season debut after Penix was injured and completed 5 of 5 passes for 31 yards. He played in five games last season and completed 6 of 11 passes for 34 yards. "Jack Tuttle is a special player, too," Allen said. Although UW's coaches don't have much video of Tuttle with the Hoosiers, they are familiar with his skills from his days as a touted prospect at Mission Hills High School in California. UW recruited Tuttle, who signed with Utah before transferring to Indiana. "You try to do your best," UW coach Paul Chryst said of preparing for a new quarterback. "Obviously, when you don't have as much film it makes it a little bit more challenging. Yet you see enough and you know what they're trying to do offensively. "You've just got to do your best in your preparation."

UW cornerback Faion Hicks insisted the members of the defense can't slack off in preparation during the week or in focus on Saturday because of the injury to Penix. "They're still a really good offense," he said. "He's not the only one who made plays for them. They have a good receiving group and I'm pretty sure the quarterback who steps in is going to try to make things work. "We've still got to prepare for a really good offense." - Journal Sentinel

  12/01/20 - *Jalen MayfieldrSo/2021, Michigan, 6-5, 326 (DS#7 OT) + More +

Offensive line coach Ed Warinner said Wednesday that Mayfield was back practicing, but the redshirt sophomore still missed his fourth straight game Saturday. Remember, Mayfield was one of three Michigan players who initially opted out before the season. With just three games remaining in 2020, he could decide to sit out the rest of the year even if healthy to not risk another injury. - Ann Arbor News

  11/27/20 - Donovan JeterrSr/2022, Michigan, 6-3, 310 (DS#34 DT) + More +

Donovan Jeter saw action in 10 games last season, but one stands out above the rest. The redshirt junior tackle was part of a Michigan defensive line that gave up 359 rushing yards in a lopsided loss to Wisconsin in 2019, a game that helped dash the Wolverines' Big Ten title hopes and prompted self-reflection from coaches and players. Jeter included, who candidly told reporters on Tuesday that he "played horribly" in that game. "That kind of affected my mindset throughout the rest of the year," Jeter said. "I didn't really get back into myself until right around the bowl game, Alabama, honestly. I told myself after that game, 'I'm never going to have that feeling last year." That feeling, Jeter said, that he could have done more. It was the most rushing yards allowed by a Michigan team in three years - and set the stage for what became a season of disappointment, with the Wolverines going 9-4 despite having an experienced team, playmakers on both sides of the ball and 10 future NFL draft picks.

"Lack of physicality," Jeter said. "Left a lot of plays out there. My technique was horrible. It was a multitude of things. After the season, I went back and just worked." Which might explain Jeter's offseason transformation. He spent most of the spring and summer at home in Beaver Falls, Pa., where be benefitted during the COVID-19 pandemic with regular home-cooked meals from his mother, workout equipment in the basement and a track down the street. The result? A more dedicated, and bulkier, Jeter. He's listed at 6-foot-3 and 318 pounds this year, up 28 pounds from last season, and earned rave reviews from coaches and teammates for his work ethic in camp. "It was definitely different training at home, training in the basement," Jeter said. "It felt like I was back in high school again. "But I think it was a huge plus for me to get back to the basics and just work hard." - Ann Arbor News

  11/27/20 - *Jalen MayfieldrSo/2021, Michigan, 6-5, 326 (DS#7 OT) + More +

There's a chance that the Michigan football team gets two of its starting offensive linemen back this weekend against Penn State. Tackles Ryan Hayes and Jalen Mayfield are back practicing this week and could be available for Saturday's game in Ann Arbor (noon, ABC), position coach Ed Warinner told reporters on Wednesday. "They're both practicing, so we're just seeing how quickly they can come back," Warinner said. "They're bot out there doing practice reps, so it's good to see them out there. I won't say anything other than that - but they are not in the training room during practice."

Warinner added that Hayes and Mayfield - sidelined the last three games with undisclosed lower-body injuries - are "on the field, in gear and working out." "We're moving them along, and they want to get back as quickly as they can," Warinner said. "So, we'll see what that is. Both - or one - might be available Saturday." In their absence, Michigan has started redshirt freshman Karsen Barnhart at left tackle, moved redshirt junior Andrew Stueber out to right tackle and started true freshman Zak Zinter at right guard. - Ann Arbor News

  11/26/20 - Kwity PayeSr/2021, Michigan, 6-3, 261 (DS#1 DE) + More +

Michigan continues to rotate a few defensive linemen in the absence of its two star defensive ends Aidan Hutchinson and Kwity Paye. Hutchinson is out for the season with a lower-leg injury, while Paye missed his second straight game last Saturday and is out indefinitely. "Questionable is a word everybody understands," Harbaugh said of the injured group. "As of Monday, guys are still working through things, and we'll see where we are later in the week." Harbaugh isn't scheduled to talk with reporters the rest of the week, so any further updates likely won't come until just before Saturday's kickoff. Asked Monday about McGrone and Hawkins specifically, Harbaugh said, "We have some updates. Nothing to release at this time." - Ann Arbor News

  11/26/20 - Hassan HaskinsSr/2022, Michigan, 6-2, 227 (DS#14 RB) + More +

The redshirt sophomore entered Saturday leading the team in rushing but received just one carry in Week 4 against Wisconsin. While the Wolverines' run game got off to a slow start against Rutgers, they remained committed to it and were rewarded in the second half. Instead of frequently rotating the backs like the in previous four games, Haskins handled the bulk of the load, finishing with 110 rushing yards and the game-winning touchdowns on 22 attempts. No other running back had more than six, although Blake Corum, Chris Evans and Zach Charbonnet each had at least one reception.

Haskins has proven to be a receiving threat out of the backfield, which was probably the reason why he didn't see many snaps after Michigan fell behind early against Wisconsin, but he has clearly been the most effective runner of the quartet through the first five games. "His play, talk about heart," Harbaugh said. "The amount of runs that Hassan had that were yards after contact this game -- tough, efficient, outstanding runs. Just tremendous." While Haskins was impressive Saturday, it still seems likely Corum, Evans and Charbonnet will still see snaps in passing situations, but we should see more of Haskins moving forward. - Ann Arbor News

  11/21/20 - Aidan HutchinsonSr/2022, Michigan, 6-7, 268 (DS#1 DE) + More +

Coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday that Michigan's standout defensive end suffered a fracture in his right leg against Indiana and will require surgery, putting him out of action for the foreseeable future. Hutchinson has been one of the Wolverines' most productive defensive players the past two seasons and won't easily be replaced. Redshirt sophomore Taylor Upshaw and redshirt junior Luiji Vilain saw an increased role after Hutchinson departed early in Saturday's game. Fellow starting end Kwity Paye also limped off the field in the second half Saturday and did not return, so Michigan could be without both starters against Wisconsin. - Ann Arbor News

  11/05/20 - Vincent GraySr/2022, Michigan, 6-2, 195 (DS#36 CB) + More +

We knew the cornerback position was one of the team's biggest question marks heading into 2020 after losing starters Lavert Hill and Ambry Thomas. But this year's starters Vincent Gray and Gemon Green acquitted themselves well in the opener against Minnesota. Saturday was a different story. Both got beat deep on multiple occasions, and they also combined for three penalties in coverage. Gray's struggles reached a tipping point in the second half, with Michigan benching him for redshirt freshman Jalen Perry, who was making his college debut. Perry didn't fare much better, begging the question: what does Michigan do at cornerback moving forward? It doesn't have much experience outside of that trio. Redshirt freshman DJ Turner and redshirt sophomore Sammy Faustin are options, but neither has appeared in a game at corner (Faustin appeared in three games at safety in 2019). Expect defensive coordinator Don Brown to make adjustments before Saturday's game at Indiana. - Ann Arbor News

When Rocky Lombardi dropped back to pass on first-and-10 from Michigan's 34-yard line with 6:36 to go, he saw a familiar scene playing out. Michigan State freshman receiver Ricky White was streaking down the right sideline, single-covered by cornerback Jalen Perry, with a beat on his defender. Lombardi let the ball go and delivered it to White for a 31-yard completion, setting up the go-ahead touchdown in the Spartans' stunning 27-24 win over Michigan on Saturday. It was a result that played out time and again for the Wolverines, whose inexperience in the secondary and unwillingness to change schematically gave MSU a pathway to victory. "We've got to look at that," Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh said of his secondary's struggles. "Every single guy. What they can do and what they can do better. Every coach, too. We've got to look at all facets of it."

On first-and-10 from the Michigan 30-yard line at the 10:57 mark of the first quarter, Lombardi found White running down the left sideline a step ahead of Michigan cornerback Gemon Green, a redshirt sophomore who made his first collegiate start a week earlier against Minnesota. It was the first sign of a long day ahead for Michigan's secondary, which was caught off guard by the Spartans' deep-ball game plan. "We didn't really expect those - because the game plan was just to hone in on the run," safety Daxton Hill said. "But they threw some (deep) shots in there, so we had to adjust." Michigan's other starting corner, Vincent Gray, had a difficult day in coverage as well. The redshirt sophomore was flagged twice, once for holding and once for pass interference, on MSU's final drive of the first quarter. Luckily for Gray, it ended in zero points after the Spartans were forced to punt, but it was a sign of things to come. - Ann Arbor News

Where did Michigan's pass-rush go that was so effective against Minnesota? The Wolverines had no sacks and just two quarterback hurries - both from Kwity Paye. For a position group that is supposed to be the identity of the defense, it needs to be better. While MSU only rushed for 3.3 yards per carry, Michigan only had two tackles for loss, which both came from linebackers. - Ann Arbor News

  10/27/20 - Aidan HutchinsonSr/2022, Michigan, 6-7, 268 (DS#1 DE) + More +

If Saturday's opener is any indication, opponents are going to be placing extra attention on Aidan Hutchinson this season. The Michigan defensive end, whose lean frame and extraordinary athletic ability make him difficult to match up with, drew extra blockers throughout the Wolverines' 49-24 win over Minnesota. Hutchinson chuckled Monday when compared to former Michigan first-round pick Rashan Gary, who received similar treatment in 2018. "Yeah, yeah, it certainly felt like it was holding - holding every play from their offensive line," Hutchinson said. "I definitely felt the double teams on Saturday too." Hutchinson was often the Michigan defensive lineman doubled up on when the Wolverines went to a three-man front.

Early in the second quarter, on second-and-15 from Michigan's 37-yard line, Minnesota closed Hutchinson off to buy Morgan enough time to hit receiver Rashod Bateman over the middle for a first down. Later in the quarter, on a second-and-5 play with the Gophers on their own 30, Hutchinson was met with two blockers to allow running Mohamed Ibrahim to break around the corner. Ibrahim was stopped by linebacker Cam McGrone for a 1-yard gain. "Minnesota had a tough scheme," Hutchinson said "They ran a lot of 12 personnel (one running back, two tight ends); a lot of heavy sets. They ran the ball a lot, so it was hard to get that pressure on those early downs just because they had their big tight ends, big personnels." - Ann Arbor News
