Rhett Rodriguez will start at quarterback for Louisiana-Monroe in the season opener at Kentucky. ULM coach Terry Bowden announced the decision during his Tuesday media availability. The Warhawks kick off against the Wildcats on Saturday at 11 a.m. on the SEC Network. "Rhett will start the game and we'll back him up from there," Bowden said. "He's got very good talent but the fact he's been raised on his father's offense and he got here in January to learn the things we've added offensively was very beneficial." Rodriguez, the son of ULM offensive coordinator Rich Rodriguez, joined the program in the spring. The graduate transfer began his career at Arizona playing for his father and Kevin Sumlin.

He graduated as valedictorian from Arizona's Eller College of Management in May and has two years of eligibility remaining. The younger Rodriguez's knowledge of Rich Rod's up-tempo spread offense helped him best Colby Suits and Jeremy Hunt for the job. Suits made eight starts in 2020 and Hunt started the final two games of the season. Bowden didn't rule out playing multiple quarterbacks at Kentucky. "Those guys all did a great job," Bowden said. "None of them have chosen to pick up and leave and they've really bought into this program. I think we have to play that thing out and see who can be that hot guy to come in. "Maybe Colby throws it a little better and Jeremy runs it a little better, but they're both pretty much conventional drop back quarterbacks and they give you that element." - The News-Star

With all five starters returning, where graduate transfer T.J. Fiailoa fits on UL's offensive line remains uncertain. The former UL Monroe guard is expected to have a role of some sort for the rival Ragin' Cajuns in 2021. But precisely what that is still isn't clear even as the Cajuns, whose spring game Thursday (7 p.m., ESPN+) at Cajun Field, head into their final week of spring practice. "The plan with him was bring him in, take advantage of his experience, get him ready to help us out immediately," said Jeff Norrid, UL's first-year offensive line coach. "We've kind of had a slower process with him, kind of mentally helping him get into shape, helping him learn the offense, learn the techniques, the terminology and all that stuff. "He's a super smart guy. Very high football IQ. And his experience shows. It does," Norrid added. "I'm really excited about him and what he brings to the table." - The News-Star

Former Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez has found a new home, and he's bringing his son along for the ride. Rodriguez on Tuesday was named the associate head coach and offensive coordinator at Louisiana-Monroe. Rodriguez will work for new Warhawks coach Terry Bowden. Rhett Rodriguez will be joining his father at ULM as a graduate transfer. The quarterback, who spent the past four seasons at Arizona, will have two years of eligibility remaining. Rhett Rodriguez, who attended Catalina Foothills High School, appeared in 11 games for the Wildcats. He completed 51 of 100 passes for 578 yards with three touchdowns and four interceptions. - Arizona Star News

Purdue will have fewer players available for Saturday's game against Nebraska after coach Jeff Brohm said Thursday a "handful of guys" have opted out of the 2020 season. The exact number isn't known, other than Brohm confirming earlier in the week that receiver Jared Sparks was one of the players. He said Thursday that receiver Amad Anderson has entered the NCAA transfer portal. The key question - are there any starters or players who've seen significant snaps among the opt-outs? The other question is why now with the season about to end? The reason probably varies from player to player, including dealing with COVID-19 and other factors. "It's all personal reasons and it's always a little of this and a little of that to it," Brohm said. "I don't want to get into the specifics, but we've had multiple people." Brohm did say since Sparks is a fifth-year year, he's not "anticipating him coming back but we'll talk to him afterwards." He added the players who have opted out for this season remain on scholarship for now. - Journal and Courier

Louisiana-Monroe is proving why 2020 is the wrong year to have a bad season. The Warhawks have lost 15 players to coronavirus-related opt-outs, the transfer portal and other departures since spring practice ended. ULM fell to a program-worst 0-7 overall record and 0-4 in the Sun Belt Conference following a 31-13 loss to Appalachian State on Saturday. "Those are all new things obviously that have added to it, coupled with the fact we're not playing well," ULM head coach Matt Viator said. "We still have plenty of guys to play, but it's affected the way we practice. Numbers always do that, whether it's injuries, quits or opt-outs."

Wide receiver Zach Jackson and defensive end Ivin White Jr. placed their names in the transfer portal last week, joining running back Kayin White, offensive lineman Chance Billington, cornerback Tajhnick Bishop, linebacker Rashaad Harding, safety Logan Wilson and cornerback Jordan Oliver. Harding, Wilson, wide receiver Brandius Batiste and defensive tackle Ed Haralson opted out of playing this season due to COVID-19. Running back Jakyle Holmes, wide receiver C.J. Fletcher, running back Javin Myers, defensive end Brandon Nettles and defensive tackle Dayonte Roberts are no longer on the team. - The News-Star

With Mason Husmann out with an injury, Ellis stepped in at nose tackle and made eight tackles, tied with defensive end Ty Shelby for third on the team. Ellis also contributed on special teams. On fourth-and-3 at the ULM 43-yard line, Ellis stopped C.J. Wright short of the sticks on fake punt with 7:35 left in the second quarter. A Monroe-native, Ellis joined the team as a walk-on out of Ouachita Parish High School. His brother, Baltimore Ravens defensive tackle Justin "Jellybean" Ellis, starred for Neville High School and Louisiana Tech. - The News-Star
