As he began tinkering with the ULM football roster in 2021, head coach Terry Bowden quickly recognized one position already in great shape. Placekicker Calum Sutherland was on campus and in the program after transferring to ULM from Oklahoma prior to Bowden's arrival. And as Bowden's first season played out, Sutherland emerged as one of the Warhawks' most valuable weapons. "Calum Sutherland is as good as it gets," Bowden said this preseason. "He's got the ability to kick off without having to change kickers. He can make a 50-yard field goal and he's got ice in his veins. He's confident and confident when he plays. We think he has a chance to be an all-star."

Added ULM special teams coordinator Alonzo Hampton: "He doesn't sweat. Very even keel. If he makes it or misses it, you'd never know the difference. He's the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. That's what separates him from most kickers." While Sutherland might have been an unknown to ULM fans a year ago, now there are loftier expectations. He's OK with that. "You always want to do better than the previous year," Sutherland said. "But I just think that's part of it, especially as a kicker. We're expected to be perfect, but it's part of it. I don't see it as extra pressure. I see it as extra motivation to perform. "I want my career to continue at the next level and the pressure is going to be more and more each time." - Louisiana-Monroe Football

Media obligations for ULM receiver started early for Boogie Knight on Wednesday morning, but the senior receiver didn't require a wake-up call. One of the most tireless players on the team, Knight was up at 5 a.m. in order to get in a workout before representing the Warhawks during Sun Belt Conference Media Days. "Slacking would be the last thing I'd do," Knight said. "I feel like every day, every month, every year, I've got to try to elevate my game. How hard I was working last summer, I thought I was pushing myself to the limit. But each year, I try to level up and push myself that much harder." A native of Jefferson, Ohio, who transferred to ULM from Akron before last season, Knight has amassed 2,819 career all-purpose yards on 230 touches (12.3 yards per play).

He needs 181 all-purpose yards to reach the 3,000-yard career milestone. After playing for ULM coach Terry Bowden at Akron, Knight came to Monroe, Louisiana, to follow his football dreams. Knight's father passed away when he was 9 years old and the work effort comes in part from a childhood promise. "Some of it is God given," said Jeremiah Knight, who was nicknamed Boogie by his father for his elusive running style. "I was born with this mindset, but it was that on top of what happened when I was a kid. Seeing what happened to my dad and that promise I made to him about making it to the NFL. The NFL is on my mind from the second I wake up to the second I fall asleep. That's what drives me." - Louisiana-Monroe Football

ULM linebacker Zack Woodard shrugged off the Sun Belt Conference's preseason poll released this week, projecting a basement finish in the West Division for the Warhawks. "Respect is earned," Woodard said while attending Sun Belt Conference Media Days. "As long as we do what we know we have to do this year, a lot is going to change." Woodard transferred to ULM prior to the 2021 season from Jacksonville State, where he was a three-year letterman who appeared in 32 career games with 18 starts at Mike linebacker. He quickly became one ULM's most productive defenders.

Selected Team MVP and Defensive MVP by the coaching staff in 2021, Woodard led the Warhawks in tackles for loss (8.5 for 27 yards) and finished second in sacks (3.5 for 18 yards. Woodard ranked second on the team with 89 tackles (42 solos, 47 assists) and stood fifth in the Sun Belt in tackles, averaging 7.4 per game. He produced double-figure tackles in four games, including 11 stops (8 solos, 3 assists) at LSU. Battling through an up-and-down 4-8 season that saw ULM lose five-straight games after opening 4-3 helped the seasoned player learn another lesson as the year unfolded. "Not finishing," Woodard said. "The potential was there. We can do it. We're almost there, but we just have to get past it." - Louisiana-Monroe Football

Malik Willis ran for a touchdown and threw for another to stake Liberty to a 14-0 lead at halftime, but the Warhawks roared back by scoring 28 straight points in the third quarter.

Chandler Rogers threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Henry to open the third and a 14-yard strike to Zach Rasmussen.
