  12/08/20 - *Daviyon NixonJr/2021, Iowa, 6-3, 313 (DS#2 DT) + More +

2020 OUTLAND TROPHY SEMIFINALIST: Daviyon Nixon, DT, Iowa (6-3, 305, Jr., Kenosha, Wis.): In just seven games, Nixon leads the Big Ten with 5.0 sacks and 11.5 tackles for loss in his first season on the Iowa front. His 36 tackles are tied for the most among Big Ten defensive linemen. Nixon opened the season with seven tackles at Purdue and then posted a career-high 11 against division champion Northwestern, and his 71-yard interception return for a touchdown at Penn State remains a national season highlight. The Hawkeyes have four Outland winners in their past, most recently offensive tackle Brandon Scherff in 2014. Offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs was a semifinalist last season. Offensive tackle Robert Gallery (2003), tackle Alex Karras (1957) and guard Calvin Jones (1955) are other winners. - Greater Omaha Sports Committee

  12/03/20 - Shaun BeyerrSr/2021, Iowa, 6-5, 250 (DS#21 TE) + More +

Originally a North Dakota State commit, Iowa got in on Beyer late and persuaded him to come. It wasn't a hard decision for a kid who grew up watching the Hawkeyes. "I liked (Ricky) Stanzi," he said. "Growing up, I tried to be a quarterback when I was younger and stuff like that. I liked Shonn Greene, too. As a running back, I wanted to be a running back when I was younger, too. So those two guys, for sure." He redshirted in 2016 and played special teams his freshman and sophomore years. Beyer played in all 13 games last season, made eight starts but had just seven receptions, gradually losing playing time to true freshman Sam LaPorta. He has nine catches in Iowa's six games this season, playing with LaPorta in a lot of two tight-end sets. "Happy for Shaun," Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz said. "That was a great effort the other day, so really great to see that. That should give him some confidence." "That's what I came here to do, to play at a high level," Beyer said. "So definitely I think it's been a blast this year, and I look to continue on the path that I'm on." - The Gazette

  12/03/20 - Ihmir Smith-MarsetteSr/2021, Iowa, 6-1, 181 (DS#32 WR) + More +

Ihmir Smith-Marsette wondered if he'd ever play football for Iowa again in the hours after his Nov. 1 arrest for driving while intoxicated. One month later, Smith-Marsette spoke to reporters for the first time about the incident, relieved that he has been embraced by his teammates and coaches and adamant that he will not repeat the mistake he made. "I was thinking, 'My football career is probably done,'" the senior wide receiver said of his initial reaction to his arrest. Smith-Marsette spoke to coach Kirk Ferentz, offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz and wide receivers coach Kelton Copeland. He said they each reassured him that they weren't giving up on him, as long as he showed that he had learned from his actions. Kirk Ferentz told Smith-Marsette he would be suspended for the next game, vs. Michigan State, but could reclaim his spot as a starting wide receiver and kickoff returner after that.

Smith-Marsette was pulled over for driving 74 mph in a 30 mph zone at 1:30 a.m. Nov. 1, hours after Iowa fell to 0-2 on the season with a 21-20 home loss to Northwestern. His blood-alcohol level was 0.13%. He was charged with OWI, a serious misdemeanor, and speeding. Smith-Marsette has hired attorney Matthew Petrzelka of Cedar Rapids to represent him, and his next court appearance has not yet been scheduled. "After that happened, I just felt down. I felt like I let the whole team down, the coaching staff," Smith-Marsette said. Instead, his coaches told him: "They still support me no matter what. We've just got to put this behind us. Mistakes happen. And as long as it's a mistake and not something that you do again - which I won't be doing again, trust me - as long as it's a mistake and you own up to it, it will fly by." - Iowa City Press-Citizen

  12/01/20 - Jack PlumbrSr/2023, Iowa, 6-8, 298 (DS#46 OT) + More +

On the Hawkeyes' depth chart released Monday for Saturday afternoon's game at Illinois, Plumb is listed as a 6-7, 293-pound right tackle. A starting one. That the Green Bay, Wis., native shrunk in height from his senior year at Bay Port High School to his redshirt sophomore year at Iowa is debatable. But there's no denying the weight gain. "It has been a lot of eating and trusting the strength coach," Plumb said. "They do a great job of making sure it's all good weight and doing what you need to do." Plumb got his first college start last week in Iowa's 26-20 win over Nebraska and is listed as the top guy at right tackle against Illinois (2-4). The game has a 2:30 p.m. kickoff and will be televised by FS1.

He's the third guy to start at right tackle this truncated season. Indiana grad transfer Coy Cronk started the first couple of games until re-injuring his surgically repaired ankle, with Mark Kallenberger replacing him. But Kallenberger was injured two weeks ago against Penn State. Enter Plumb, who picked Iowa over offers from Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan State, among others. "After Mark went down, I prepared like any other week," Plumb said. "Got the reps with the 1s all week, so I had a lot of confidence going into this game." - The Gazette

  11/28/20 - Tyler LinderbaumrJr/2022, Iowa, 6-2, 302 (DS#1 C) + More +

Linderbaum was asked this week how much he has thought about the NFL, and if he'll have a decision to make after this season, as far as considering entering the draft. He brushed off that talk rapidly. "My focus is on this season," he said. "To me, I still have a lot of improvement I need to make, and I'm just focused on that: what I need to get better at. I see a lot of things that I can get better at. There's a lot in the run game and the pass game. Just like anything else, I think I can improve a lot in the pass game, with my feet and hands. Just being better overall." "(The center) has got a tough job because he's got to get the ball to the quarterback ... then also block. I've always thought he had the toughest job out there on the field, and there are certain blocks in our offense that aren't easy to execute," Kirk Ferentz said. "So if you get a guy that has got that ability, it's a really good thing. At the end of the day, centers are the MVPs. Quarterbacks think they are big shots, but if they don't get the ball, they are going nowhere." - The Gazette

  11/27/20 - *Tyler GoodsonJr/2022, Iowa, 5-09, 202 (DS#25 RB) + More +

Tyler Goodson ran for 87 of his 111 yards in the second half and Zach VanValkenburg recovered Adrian Martinez's late fumble to secure Iowa's 26-20 win over Nebraska on Saturday. The Hawkeyes (4-2, 4-2 Big Ten) extended their win streak to four games and have beaten the Cornhuskers (1-4, 1-4) six years in a row. Iowa was looking to add to its six-point lead when Keith Duncan's 51-yard field-goal attempt bounced off the cross bar with 2:02 left. The Cornhuskers then drove from their 32 to the Iowa 39 before Martinez fumbled under pressure. Iowa ran out the last 1:18.

Tied 13-13 at halftime, Nebraska took its first lead on its opening drive of the third quarter. Utilizing a quick tempo, the Huskers capped an eight-play, 70-yard drive with a 12-yard touchdown run by Rahmir Johnson. Iowa answered with a 14-play, 66-yard drive. Mekhi Sargen punctuated the drive with a touchdown, and Duncan followed with field goals of 48 and 37 yards. Spencer Petras completed 18 of 30 passes for 193 yards and a touchdown, with one interception. Martinez, back as the starter after two games, was 18 of 20 for 174 yards. He also ran for 28 yards and a score. - Iowa/AP College Football

  11/27/20 - Alaric JacksonrSr/2021, Iowa, 6-6, 321 (DS#11 OT) + More +

It's five games into this experiment, and Alaric Jackson feels just fine. Not fair to call it an experiment at this point, either. The Iowa offensive tackle seems to be all in with not eating meat. Just ask him about his vegan diet, what he's eating while his teammates chow down on steaks, burgers, chicken and everything else at their daily training table at the Hawkeye football complex. "I'm pretty big on pasta, for the most part," Jackson said. "That's the biggest thing I love, pasta. Veggies, tofu, things of that nature. But late night, I'll make my own meals. I chose last night potatoes, mushrooms, green peppers, jalapenos. So it kind of goes how it goes, honestly. It's not like there is a (specific) direction." Jackson wanted to be healthier, lose some of his fat as he went into this truncated season, a big one for him, considering his potential to be a high NFL draft pick.

His body is noticeably different, though he insists he hasn't necessarily lost weight, just bad weight. He's still listed at 6-foot-6 and 315 pounds. "I talked about (defensive end) Chauncey (Golston) earlier in the session here and same story, only a different story, because Chauncey came in here as a skinny kid, and A.J. was a heavy kid," said Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz. "I've been around linemen for a long time now. It's hard for big guys to lose weight, and he's done an unbelievable job of that. I think he's shown extreme discipline, and we've watched him grow every step of the way, too." Jackson considered entering the NFL Draft this year but ultimately decided to return. He was a third-team all-Big Ten pick in 2019, and that was despite missing three games with a leg injury. - The Gazette

  11/27/20 - Erick AllrSr/2024, Iowa, 6-4, 252 (DS#11 TE) + More +

Michigan's Erick All has his confidence back. The sophomore tight end nearly had as many dropped passes (four) than receptions (five) in the first three games of the season. But All has gone two games since without a drop and has six catches during that span, including four for 27 yards in Saturday's 48-42 triple-overtime victory over Rutgers. "Obviously, it was irritating dropping the ball," All told reporters Monday. "I don't even know why I was dropping it, but it was irritating because I knew how good of hands I had. I just felt like I just needed to trust myself, and once I found that trust in the Rutgers game, I felt confident. I felt like a new person took over me. I just felt like I had a different energy and it just made me a better player for this team."

On Nov. 11, tight ends coach Sherrone Moore said All was making "spectacular" catches regularly during practice but felt the former four-star prospect from Ohio was overthinking during games. All had a drop that would have been an easy touchdown in Michigan's opener and also had a costly one on third down against Indiana in Week 3. "After I dropped the first ball in the Minnesota game, I think it was just in my head," All said. "Thank god it's out because, man, I was down for a little bit." - Ann Arbor News

  11/13/20 - *Tyler GoodsonJr/2022, Iowa, 5-09, 202 (DS#25 RB) + More +

Tyler Goodson rushed for a career-high 142 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries, and Iowa's defense clamped down hard on Minnesota for a 35-7 victory on Friday night that gave the Hawkeyes possession of the Floyd of Rosedale trophy for the sixth season. Jack Koerner and Riley Moss each picked off Tanner Morgan for the Gophers quarterback's first two-interception game in two years, and Zach VanValkenburg had three of the team's four sacks.

Iowa's defense has a streak of 11 straight games with at least one interception. The Hawkeyes (2-2) had to wait to hoist the 98-pound bronze pig until they reached the locker room out of respect to the virus protocols required to get the season going, but their 16th win in the last 20 games against their border-state rival to the north was just as sweet. Minnesota's Mohamed Ibrahim rushed for 144 yards on 33 attempts, but the junior tailback who entered the evening with the highest rushing average in the FBS didn't come close to controlling the game like the last two weeks. - AP College Football

  11/07/20 - *Tyler GoodsonJr/2022, Iowa, 5-09, 202 (DS#25 RB) + More +

Tyler Goodson ran for 113 yards and two touchdowns as Iowa throttled Michigan State 49-7 on Saturday. Goodson led a balanced Iowa offense that racked up a season-high point total. The sophomore's outing included a career-long 71-yard scamper, which set the Hawkeyes (1-2, 1-2 Big Ten) up for their sixth touchdown of the day. Goodson scored on a 3-yard run early in the first to spark Iowa's scoring. Quarterback Spencer Petras found wideout Brandon Smith to give Iowa a 14-0 with 4:31 left in the first quarter.

Another touchdown run by Goodson put Iowa ahead 21-0 in the second, but the Hawkeye defense and special teams stepped to the plate. Punt returner Charlie Jones took a kick 54 yards to the end zone. Minutes later, cornerback Riley Moss picked off Spartan quarterback Rocky Lombardi, returning the interception 54 yards for the score. It was a shaky outing for Michigan State's junior quarterback. Lombardi completed 17 of his 37 throws for 227 yards and three interceptions, just one game removed from a 323-yard, three-touchdown performance against No. 23 Michigan. - AP College Football

  11/06/20 - Calvin LockettrJr/2023, Iowa, 6-1, 183 (DS#999 WR) + More +

For the third time in less than a week, the Iowa Hawkeyes have lost a reserve player to the transfer portal. This time it's redshirt sophomore wide receiver Calvin Lockett, who officially entered the portal Tuesday morning. 247Sports first reported the move that was later confirmed by HawkCentral. Lockett's entry comes five days after Iowa redshirt freshmen Shadrick Byrd and Yaweh Jeudy opted to do the same. The common thread here appears to be lack of game action. In parts of three seasons, Lockett has yet to appear in a game. The 6-foot-2 receiver from Largo, Florida, was a former three-star prospect as part of the 2018 class. He committed to the Hawkeyes on Dec. 13, 2017, over offers from South Florida and Florida International. It was thought that securing Lockett would give Iowa a deep-threat boost to a pass-catching corps that needed a boost at the time. - Iowa City Press-Citizen

  11/05/20 - Coy CronkrSr/2021, Iowa, 6-5, 305 (DS#36 OT) + More +

Indiana grad transfer Coy Cronk started at right tackle for Iowa but had uneven playing time there, with Mark Kallenberger spelling him a lot. Ferentz said it was more a coach's decision than a new injury. Cronk had ankle surgery last season and is still trying to get up to full speed, so to speak, because of it. "Coy just didn't look quite comfortable enough, so we'll go back to work Monday," Ferentz said. "He missed a lot of time, as I said, in the past, and he's still working through some things. But Coy is a tremendous guy. He's going to be a good player for us. I thought he was struggling a little bit." - The Gazette

  11/03/20 - *Daviyon NixonJr/2021, Iowa, 6-3, 313 (DS#2 DT) + More +

As if Daviyon Nixon hadn't expended enough energy on the football field Saturday, there he was on the sideline trying to rev up his Iowa teammates for a crucial late drive. Nixon is a 305-pound defensive tackle who has quickly become the star of this Hawkeye team, and maybe the best reason for fans to keep watching even after an 0-2 start to the season. "Even on the sideline, we've got to stay together as a unit and stay together as a team and we've got to just finish," Nixon said after he tried to will the Hawkeyes to a victory over Northwestern at Kinnick Stadium. "I need everybody participating. I need everybody hyped up. I need all the juice from the sidelines, the fans, everybody who's out there.

"We came out here for a reason, and that's just to get the job done. So if we're out there, you've got to be out there in the moment and you've got to love it." Ultimately, Iowa did not get the job done in its home opener, falling to the Wildcats 21-20. This was no fault of Nixon's. The junior who is playing nearly every snap came up with 11 tackles, three of them for a loss, and forced a second-half fumble that may have changed the outcome if the Hawkeyes could have gotten to the football first. Afterward, Nixon said exactly what you want to hear the MVP of a losing team say. "If we don't get the win," a weary Nixon declared, "I never feel like I did enough." - Iowa City Press-Citizen
