  11/02/20 - Ihmir Smith-MarsetteSr/2021, Iowa, 6-1, 181 (DS#32 WR) + More +

Iowa receiver Ihmir Smith-Marsette was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving early Sunday and will be suspended for next weekend's home game against Michigan State. Smith-Marsette was driving a 2017 Chevrolet Camaro when Iowa City police pulled him over for speeding about 1:30 a.m., hours after the Hawkeyes' 21-20 loss to Northwestern. A police report said Smith-Marsette was traveling 74 mph in a 30-mph zone, and the responding officer described Smith-Marsette as having bloodshot and watery eyes and smelling of alcohol. Smith-Marsette failed field sobriety tests, and his blood-alcohol content was .13. The legal limit is .08. Ferentz said Smith-Marsette was apologetic and disappointed in himself. Smith-Marsette was the Hawks' leading receiver last season, and he had a team-leading seven catches for 84 yards against Northwestern. The senior from Newark, New Jersey, went into the Northwestern game as the top kickoff returner in Big Ten history, averaging 29.4 yards on 48 career returns. - AP College Football

  10/29/20 - Yahweh JeudyrSo/2024, Iowa, 6-0, 212 (DS#999 OLB) + More +

Iowa redshirt freshmen Shadrick Byrd and Yahweh Jeudy have entered the NCAA transfer portal with the intention to transfer at the end of the fall semester, coach Kirk Ferentz announced Thursday. Bryd, a running back from Alabaster, Alabama, played on special teams in Iowa's opener at Purdue. Jeudy, a linebacker from Pompano Beach, Florida, has not appeared in a game. Both players were three-star players coming out of high school, according to the 247sports composite rankings. Byrd had no offers from Power Five schools other than Iowa. Jeudy's other Power Five offers were from Syracuse and Kansas State. - AP College Football

  10/28/20 - Nick JacksonrSr/2025, Iowa, 6-1, 228 (DS#16 ILB) + More +

A connection dating back to the 1980s has resulted in one of the bright spots for Virginia's 1-4 football team. The Cavaliers' leading tackler is Nick Jackson, a sophomore linebacker from Atlanta who had 16 tackles, eight unassisted, in the Cavaliers' 19-14 loss Saturday at Miami. "Nick Jackson (6 foot 1, 235 pounds) is currently our best defensive football player in terms of his production, his consistency and how he's playing," UVa head coach Bronco Mendenhall said earlier this week. "He's dynamic. He's fast. He's assignment-sound. He's an excellent tackler. Nick's jump from last year to this year has been the most significant [of] any player on our team this year. He's making lots and lots and lots of plays. "So, I really am impressed."

As a senior at the Lovett School in Atlanta, Jackson was rated the No. 58 prospect in Georgia by 247Sports and the No. 64 Georgian by rivals.com. He was listed with ACC offers from Boston College, N.C. State and Syracuse, but he was not the object of a nationwide recruiting battle. And that was fine for the Cavaliers, as well as the Jackson family. His father, Doug Jackson, was a Virginia graduate with ties to the program through his UVa fraternity brother, Tony Covington. Covington was a defensive back on the 1990 Cavaliers' team that was ranked No. 1 in the country and currently serves as an analyst on radio broadcasts of UVa games. - Roanoke Times

  10/27/20 - Erick AllrSr/2024, Iowa, 6-4, 252 (DS#11 TE) + More +

Erick All's dropped touchdown pass in the third quarter of Saturday's win over Minnesota caught many on the Michigan sideline by surprise. The sophomore tight end has a reputation for catching anything thrown his way in practice, a trait that helped him get onto the field as a true freshman in 2019. So when offensive coordinator Josh Gattis called the very next play for All, a short flip pass to him behind the line of scrimmage, he made the most of it by picking up 23 yards for a first down. "I was just way too excited," All told reporters Monday over a video conference call. "I felt like the coaches knew that. If it weren't for that second opportunity, it probably would have been in my head. I felt like the coaches knew that they had confidence that I don't really drop balls, for real. "I just thank God that the coaches believed in me and I was able to get out there for the second play and do what was right."

Head coach Jim Harbaugh called All one of the "unheralded" offensive players in Michigan's 49-24 win over the Golden Gophers, praising his blocking for helping set free some of those big plays. All got the start - the first of his career - after Nick Eubanks was unavailable to Michigan. "His blocking was phenomenal," Harbaugh said Monday. "In line, on the perimeter - just tremendous. He had the opportunity for the touchdown. It was just so natural for him catching, that he pulled his head away just as the ball was coming in. He just expects to catch everything - and always does." All came to Michigan in 2019 as a project tight end. He played receiver all throughout high school and become used to running routes and catching the football. - Ann Arbor News

  10/23/20 - Coy CronkrSr/2021, Iowa, 6-5, 305 (DS#36 OT) + More +

Indiana has three former offensive linemen in the NFL, so it's not like Cronk couldn't have gotten there from Bloomington. But seven former Hawkeyes O-linemen are in the NFL including 2020 first-round draftee Tristan Wirfs of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. "We lost a really good player in Tristan, who's doing really well right now," Ferentz said. "We lose a guy that you could really count on who had that experience level, it's nice to have another guy who's also pretty experienced. … We're thrilled Coy's here." Cronk is slotted as the starting right tackle Saturday. It's a homecoming, though not the one he could have had. It wasn't that Cronk had any bone to pick with Purdue's current coach.

"I ran into Brohm a few times being around Lafayette," Cronk said. "He's a tremendous coach, he's a great friend, and more importantly, what he does for the community, which I respect a ton. What he's been able to do there and bring excitement back to life, that's been awesome." "When I decided to grad-transfer I just didn't feel like it was the right thing to go to Purdue. Just being a team captain at Indiana, just having the respect I do for Indiana, to me it didn't seem like the best move. "I really wasn't in the business of trying to disrespect anyone or anything like that. It already was a tough decision and I didn't want to throw oil on the fire or anything like that." While the Hoosiers obviously didn't want to see a beloved and proven starting tackle leave, it would at least be a little consolation to them if he helped the Hawkeyes hang a home defeat on Purdue. - The Gazette

  10/17/20 - Alaric JacksonrSr/2021, Iowa, 6-6, 321 (DS#11 OT) + More +

This 2020 Hawkeye offensive line doesn't care about getting love, but it sure would like to move large humans around against their will. That would mean new quarterback Spencer Petras is being protected and Iowa's talented trio of running backs are springing free for big gains. And even though offensive line coach Tim Polasek lost the one guy that could make the highlight reels in Tristan Wirfs, his 2020 group has encouraging, collective potential. "I like this group," Polasek said. "I like the energy. I really like the leadership."

Offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz - another coach with expertise on the offensive line - indicated that three players had emerged as starters ahead of the Oct. 24 opener at Purdue: Alaric Jackson at left tackle, Coy Cronk at right tackle and Tyler Linderbaum at center. No wonder: Collectively, that trio has 87 career starts. There's excitement about Jackson, a second-team all-Big Ten pick in 2018 who got hurt in Week 1 last season and never fully recovered. Now, after immersing himself in a vegan diet, he's transformed his 6-foot-6, 315-pound frame entering his fourth year in Iowa's starting lineup. If he has a strong nine-game season, he could follow Wirfs as a first-round NFL Draft pick. "He's quicker, he's more sudden," Polasek said. "I see a change in the morning (at practice). He's got a little bit more energy." - Iowa City Press-Citizen

  10/10/20 - Alaric JacksonrSr/2021, Iowa, 6-6, 321 (DS#11 OT) + More +

Alaric Jackson has gone to a vegan "lifestyle" and certainly looks thinner. "To each his own," said Jackson, who noted he's still packing 320 pounds on his 6-foot-6 frame despite not eating meat. "Nothing's changed, I just lost some body fat, that's all. Just looking forward to the season for the most part." There was a legitimate feeling within the program that Jackson might not return to the field for the Hawkeyes. But the 34-game starter at left tackle is back for Year 4 in Iowa's starting lineup, although for the first time he'll be protecting the blind-side of a quarterback other than three-year starter Nate Stanley. "I never left or went anywhere. There was no defined choice, whether there was a season or not," Jackson said. "I wasn't going to (consider an) opt-out until there was a defined choice. Now we're playing football, so I'm here." - Iowa City Press-Citizen

  10/10/20 - Chauncey GolstonrSr/2021, Iowa, 6-5, 269 (DS#26 DE) + More +

Chauncey Golston is coy with answers, but emphatic about this: He never thought about opting out of season. Golston is the only returning starter on Iowa's defensive line, and he was in a playful mood with the media Wednesday. When it came to questions about which end of the line he will man this year, whether he'll occasionally line up at tackle in passing situations or even which of his teammates will be counted on to produce turnovers, Golston would only smile and say: "You'll see soon." Golston, whose mother is a nurse back in Michigan, had expressed some concerns in May about whether it was wise to attempt a football season during the COVID-19 pandemic. But he said he felt more at ease about things when the Big Ten Conference announced its return-to-play plan in August. "Not one ounce of doubt," Golston said. "I love this game. I couldn't imagine not playing it. … I couldn't sit out, opt out or do anything crazy like that." - Iowa City Press-Citizen

  10/09/20 - Djimon ColbertrSr/2022, Iowa, 6-0, 225 (DS#999 ILB) + More +

Fourth-year linebacker Djimon Colbert and second-year defensive lineman Taajhir McCall will not play or participate in team activities for the 2020 season. The university made the announcement after 5 p.m. Monday and said the players were opting out over concerns about the COVID-19 global pandemic. Colbert's decision was first reported last week by Hawkeye Nation. His loss is significant, with 23 career starts and 113 tackles under his belt. Colbert is a two-year starter at weak-side linebacker, though he was expected to be pushed for a first-team role this fall by veteran Nick Niemann (who replaced him in the Holiday Bowl) and up-and-coming linebacker Jack Campbell, among others. Colbert remains in good standing with the Hawkeyes and can return in 2021. We haven't heard as much about McCall. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound native of Pensacola, Florida, redshirted last season. Players opting out do not lose their athletic scholarship. - Iowa City Press-Citizen

  09/23/20 - Ihmir Smith-MarsetteSr/2021, Iowa, 6-1, 181 (DS#32 WR) + More +

It's rare to say that wide receivers are THE strength of an Iowa football team. The Hawkeyes list 19 wide receivers on their roster, 10 of whom are on scholarship. The return of last year's Big Four of Brandon Smith, Ihmir Smith-Marsette, Nico Ragaini and Tyrone Tracy Jr. (combined 163 catches for 2,189 receiving yards and 21 total touchdowns in 2019), brings optimism for an even higher-octane offense. Youngsters Calvin Lockett or Desmond Hutson seem poised to emerge if there are injuries, and Max Cooper hasn't gone away. Credit to assistant coach Kelton Copeland for bolstering the receivers room. - Iowa City Press-Citizen
