Myles Murphy stands 6-5, 278 pounds, but the Clemson defensive end aims to keep his head below the clouds. The junior, who finds himself mentioned among the top NFL draft prospects for 2023, will politely shrug off questions about the next step. It doesn't matter what a mock draft says. Murphy's father recently reminded him that Georgia defensive end Travon Walker wasn't even projected as a top prospect coming into the '21 season - and he just went No. 1 overall to the Jacksonville Jaguars in April. "A lot of those mock drafts, they can be right," Murphy said. "But most of them are incorrect." Still, some of the same freakish athletic traits that shot Walker up the board - at 6-5, 272 pounds - are undoubtedly present in Murphy.

His size, his power, his surprisingly nimble feet. Along with mock drafts, Murphy's name appeared on national college football analyst Bruce Feldman's list of the top "freaks" in the sport, citing the Clemson defensive end's 405-pound bench press, 505-pound deadlift and a 40-yard dash time clocked in the high 4.5-second range. Murphy can't deny it all - or what it means. "I'm even faster, honestly," Murphy said. "In high school, I got a 4.53, a 4.51, something like that. Haven't run a 40 since then. So we'll see. We'll see during the combine or whatever." As a former five-star recruit, it's been long-suspected Murphy's journey would eventually intersect with the NFL. Barring the unexpected, he will find himself in Indianapolis in late February, verifying that 40 time for NFL scouts. Though DJ Uiagalelei remains the No. 4 Tigers' clear starter, Cade Klubnik's performance across two preseason camp scrimmages have further emphasized just how ready the backup is. "The game has slowed down for him," Swinney said Wednesday. "Cade has done an awesome job," offensive coordinator Brandon Streeter added Monday. "He's done nothing but continue to get better and better and better." Klubnik looked mostly sharp in his unofficial Clemson debut in the Tigers' April spring game, completing 15 of 23 passes for 106 yards and a touchdown to Uiagalelei's 17 of 36, 175-yard stat line. But the early enrollee also took five "sacks" - plays whistled dead since defenders weren't allowed to hit the purple jersey-wearing quarterbacks - and, as is frequent with freshmen, needed to bulk up for transition from high school to college football.

Consider the latter point solved. The 6-foot-2 Klubnik jumped from 185 pounds in January to 197 in August, making up a frame that the 6-4, 234-pound Uiagalelei doesn't quite dwarf. And though Klubnik's "purple jersey syndrome" is still a lingering issue, Swinney said he's playing smarter - and more dynamically - in the pocket. Added weight also hasn't done anything to slow down the former No. 6 national recruit. "Cade, he's a problem in the pocket because he's really, really fast," Swinney said. "It's just awesome, because he can really create. It's good for Clemson. It's also good for our defense to see some speed like that, because he can really, really run." - The State

Hunter Johnson stood just inside a tunnel at Memorial Stadium, admitting to some feelings of déjà vu as he completed another practice with his old-and-new team. Then Clemson coach Dabo Swinney walked by, repeating one of his new favorite words. "Boomerang...boomerang..." Swinney loves it. In the era of the transfer portal, when players are hopping from one school to another, Clemson made a rare decision to take a player from another university. But he took Johnson, a sixth-year quarterback who spent four years at Northwestern after a freshman season at Clemson. He left, then came back.

When the former five-star prospect transferred in the summer of 2018, he made what felt like a very permanent decision. Johnson was leaving behind what felt like - and turned out to be - a championship team. That was hard. But the era of Trevor Lawrence was dawning. Johnson loved Clemson, but he needed a fresh start. So he went out the door, never expecting to come back. He didn't know what the next four years at Northwestern would hold, dealing with concussions, knee injuries, and a pandemic. It's only because of the pandemic - and the NCAA granting athletes an additional year of eligibility - that Johnson can wear a Clemson uniform again. "Just putting all that in perspective, I've really been trying to soak it up this year and just have fun with it," Johnson said. All-conference Clemson football defensive end Xavier Thomas will miss four to six weeks with a foot injury, defensive coordinator Wes Goodwin said Monday. Thomas, a presumed starter and former five-star recruit, injured his foot in the Tigers' first scrimmage of preseason camp on Saturday in Memorial Stadium. "He's had a great camp and he's in a great spot conditioning-wise," Goodwin said of Thomas. "It's an unfortunate setback, but he's got the right mindset and we'll respond and get him back early in the year." Goodwin said he would defer to coach Dabo Swinney on the specifics of Thomas' injury, including what type of foot injury it was and which foot it was on.

Swinney's next scheduled preseason camp media availability is on Wednesday afternoon. >Goodwin added that it was "great news" to hear that Thomas' injury was not a season-ending one. The fifth-year defensive end is in a "good, positive state" now after being "down a little bit" after his initial injury Saturday, Goodwin said. "Life is tough and unfair at times," Goodwin said, "but he's in a great mental state right now and he's very positive and really excited to get back to where he was." Clemson starting defensive end Xavier Thomas will miss up to six weeks with a foot injury suffered over the weekend. Defensive coordinator Wes Goodwin said Monday that Thomas, a 6-foot-5, 265-pound fifth-year lineman, will need surgery. Thomas hurt himself during a scrimmage Saturday and tweeted afterward: "Small thing to a GIANT. The work does not stop! Ill be right back." A Clemson spokesman said in a text to The Associated Press that he didn't know if Thomas injured his right or left foot. One of Clemson football's top defensive linemen suffered an injury during the program's Saturday scrimmage, according to multiple media outlets. The Clemson Insider and Clemson Sports, citing sources, reported that fifth-year defensive end Xavier Thomas limped off the field Saturday with an injury. Thomas later left Memorial Stadium on a golf cart with a trainer by his side. "Life really isn't fair man. It really isn't," Thomas tweeted at 1:29 p.m. Saturday, adding in a follow-up tweet with a heart emoji: "Small thing to a GIANT. The work does not stop! (I'll) be right back. God got the kid." Clemson had no immediate update on Thomas' status or immediate timeline for providing an update, a team spokesperson told The State on Saturday. After battling injuries and lingering coronavirus symptoms over the past three seasons, Thomas, the No. 3 overall recruit in his high school class, was primed for a big 2022 with the Tigers. Don't ask Barrett Carter how many positions he'll play this season because, honestly, he doesn't know. His personal assessment of where he stands on the Clemson defense: "They say I'm a linebacker right now..." It's a good problem to have for both parties, though. Carter will likely triple his freshman season snap count, and Clemson will have another switchable defender. Whether it's at linebacker or nickel, the speedy Carter has a chance to emerge as one of the Tigers' most vital players behind a stacked defensive line. The former five-star recruit and No. 33 player in the class of 2021 has already flashed some talent in big games, too. It took a while for Jake Briningstool to find his spot in Clemson's offense as a true freshman. But when he did, his contributions were hard to miss. His first career catch was a diving grab against Florida State, and his two grabs against UConn went for 31 yards and a 25-yard touchdown. In an admittedly limited sample size, that's 22.3 yards per catch. Senior Davis Allen is Clemson's most well-rounded tight end, a more-than-capable blocker and receiver, but expect "Brinny" to see more first-team reps and targets in 2022. A freshman Clemson football defender who joined the program over the summer will have season-ending surgery, coach Dabo Swinney announced Wednesday. Swinney said freshman cornerback Myles Oliver will undergo surgery to fix "an issue with his shoulder" lingering from his high school career that came up again in preseason camp. He'll miss the entire 2022 season as a result, Swinney said. The 6-foot, 170-pound Oliver was expected to redshirt the 2022 season, prompting Clemson to "probably go ahead and fix it so that we're not dealing with it down the road," Swinney said. Oliver signed with Clemson as a three-star 2022 recruit from Douglas County High School in Georgia. A converted quarterback, he ranked as the No. 73 cornerback and No. 791 overall recruit in his class.
