Speed continues to be all the rage at the NFL scouting combine. And on Saturday, it was the defensive players putting on a track meet. Linebacker Isaiah Simmons completed the 40-yard dash in 4.39 seconds - matching the time put up the fastest running back in Indianapolis, Jonathan Taylor, and faster than all but six receivers. The 238-pound Simmons, who played at Clemson, likely cemented himself as a top 10 pick in the April draft. How fast was he? Simmons opted against taking a second attempt. Only two other linebackers were ran sub-4.5s. Willie Gay Jr., of Mississippi State, posted a 4.46 and Davion Taylor, of Colorado, had a 4.49. - AP College Football

  02/26/20 - *Trevor LawrenceJr/2021, Clemson, 6-6, 213 (DS#1 QB) + More +

Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence was edgy and antsy after his second national championship game, something he hasn't felt too often. But six weeks ago, the spectacular sophomore who hadn't lost a game in college had his worst performance as Clemson's starter in a 42-25 loss to LSU in the title game. Lawrence was off target, missing open receivers and struggling to complete passes to keep Clemson in the game. It was a humbling experience he didn't get past easily. "Anytime after a game like that, it takes a little while to sink in and move on," Lawrence said Wednesday as Clemson opened spring workouts. "It took me a little while especially the way it happened."

Lawrence had been nothing short of perfection — he started his career 29-0 - since arriving at Clemson. But against LSU, Lawrence looked ordinary. He finished 18 of 37 passing with no touchdowns and a fumble in the final quarter that all but sealed things for LSU. He returned back to campus and wanted to jump right back into practice. Instead, the 6-foot-6 passer had plenty of time to ponder what went wrong and plan to make things better going forward. "Going through adversity, I hadn't gone through much," he said of his time with the Tigers. "It definitely gives you some perspective, appreciate the little things. It makes you want to work even harder to get back there." - AP College Football

NCAA President Mark Emmert has urged Congress to step in and put restrictions on college athletes' ability to earn money from endorsements. He told a Senate committee federal action was needed to "maintain uniform standards in college sports" amid player-friendly laws approved in California and under consideration in other states. The NCAA has said it will allow players to "benefit" from the use of their name, image and likeness and is working on rules for the payments. Meanwhile, more than half of U.S. states are considering legislation to guarantee those rights to players. Emmert says those laws could have a corrupting influence on recruiting. - AP College Football

Clemson offensive coordinator Tony Elliott has received a raise and will earn $1.6 million a year after the school approved a new contract for several Tigers assistants. With the raise, Elliott is now tied with Alabama's Steve Sarkisian as the highest paid offensive assistant in college football. Elliott received a raise of $600,000 a year after school trustees approved deals for several football assistants Thursday. He also received a one-year extension puts him under contract with Clemson through the 2022 season.

Defensive coordinator Brent Venables also his contract extended a year through 2024, although he did not receive a raise on his $2.2 million a year salary. The actions were approved Thursday by the school's compensation committee of the Board of Trustees. The Tigers went 14-1 this past season, winning their fifth straight Atlantic Coast Conference title and beating Ohio State in the College Football Playoff semifinal before falling to LSU, 42-25, in the national championship game last month. - AP College Football

Running back Travis Etienne announced on Friday his intention to return to Clemson for his senior season in 2020. Etienne enters 2020 as the ACC's all-time career leader in rushing touchdowns (56), total touchdowns (62) and points by a non-kicker (372). He earned ACC Player of the Year honors for the second straight season in 2019, becoming the first running back to collect the award in back-to-back years in more than four decades (Mike Voight in 1975-76). In 2019, Etienne became the first 4,000-yard career rusher in Clemson history. He joined NC State's Ted Brown, Florida State's Dalvin Cook, North Carolina's Amos Lawrence, Maryland's LaMont Jordan, Louisville's Lamar Jackson, Georgia Tech's Robert Lavette, Wake Forest's Chris Barclay and Boston College's AJ Dillon to become only the ninth 4,000-yard rusher in ACC history. - Clemson Football

  12/28/19 - *Trevor LawrenceJr/2021, Clemson, 6-6, 213 (DS#1 QB) + More +

Trevor Lawrence connected with Travis Etienne on a 34-yard touchdown with 1:49 left in the fourth quarter and No. 3 Clemson beat No. 2 Ohio State 29-23 Saturday night at the Fiesta Bowl to advance to the College Football Playoff championship game. The Tigers (14-0) will play No. 1 LSU on Jan. 13 in New Orleans, looking for their third national title in the last four seasons. The Tigers went 94 yards on four plays in 1:18, with Lawrence completing all three of his passes and mixing in an 11-yard run. The sophomore quarterback who has never lost a college start passed for 259 yards and two scores and ran for a career-high 107 yards, including a 67-yard touchdown late in the first half.

Lawrence added a 2-point conversion to Tee Higgins, but it left plenty of time for Ohio State (13-1) and Justin Fields to respond. The Buckeyes drove to the Clemson 23, but on second-and-7, Fields fired to the end zone and was picked off by Nolan Turner with 37 seconds left. Ohio State receiver Chris Olave had broken off his route and left Fields throwing to no one. One more knee from Lawrence and defending national champion Clemson had secured its 29th straight victory and fourth trip to the CFP championship game in five years. Ohio State blew a 16-point first-half lead and went into the fourth quarter trailing 21-16, and with everything seemingly going Clemson's way. - AP College Football

Higgins lost his helmet on the hit and was attended to by Clemson's trainers before heading to the locker room with a towel over his head. The junior receiver leads the second-ranked Tigers with 1,082 yards and 13 touchdowns on 52 catches. Clemson has struggled without Higgins, trailing 16-0 midway through the second quarter. - AP College Football
