Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence and his girlfriend have restarted their efforts to raise money for those affected by the new coronavirus. They announced their decision Saturday on social media. The two had set up a GoFundMe page earlier this week until told by Clemson compliance officials the site violated NCAA rules against using an athlete's name, image and likeness for crowd funding. But the NCAA said Tuesday that Lawrence and other athletes could use such sites to raise money in this case. Lawrence's girlfriend, Marissa Mowry, is a soccer player at Anderson University, about 15 miles from Clemson's campus. They created the "Trevor Lawrence and Marissa Mowry COVID-19 Relief Fund" designed to provide direct assistance to families affected by the pandemic. - AP College Football

"Burrow and Simmons might be the two best that I've ever seen," said the NFL scout, who has studied players for nearly five decades. The Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Year lined up at defensive end, linebacker and safety as well as other spots for the Tigers. "It's like getting three first-round draft picks in one," Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said in an Associated Press article after the school's pro day on March 12, the day the sports world came to a halt. But the areas that have the most foundational players aren't at quarterback or linebacker but at wide receiver and the offensive line, especially at the tackle position. "I think this may be the best group of offensive lineman that I've seen," the scout said. "I got three (tackles) in the top 10." The receivers, meanwhile, boast so much talent that Jeremiah said he rated 27 receivers with top-three-round grades. Regardless, there will be talent at every position to satisfy the teams and their fans.

"The draft is what you put into it," the scout said. "People say there are good years and bad years - there are always players out there." But how will the draft turn out with no pro days and team visits? "(You) have to go back to the old drafts, which were better drafts, where they used to be held two weeks after the Senior Bowl and the coaches couldn't get involved. And you didn't have anybody getting excited about running around in their undershorts," the scout said. "People forget what happened in September and October, and they just remember what happened in March. And the problem in March is, they're in shorts." - Honolulu Advertiser

Count Kirk Herbstreit as one of those who believe there will not be a college football season this fall, thanks to the coronavirus pandemic. The ESPN analyst talked about why he thinks COVID-19 will keep teams on the sidelines. "I'll be shocked if we have NFL football this fall, if we have college football. I'll be so surprised if that happens," Herbstreit said, per TMZ. "Just because from what I understand, people that I listen to, you're 12 to 18 months from a (coronavirus) vaccine. I don't know how you let these guys go into locker rooms and let stadiums be filled up and how you can play ball. I just don't know how you can do it with the optics of it." On Monday, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell sent a memo Thursday to all 32 teams stating the 2020 NFL Draft is still a go April 23-25, but Herbstreit said he would shut down the season. "Next thing you know you got a locker room full of guys that are sick," he said. "And that's on your watch? I wouldn't want to have that." "As much as I hate to say it, I think we're scratching the surface of where this thing's gonna go." - Birmingham News

  03/26/20 - Braden GallowaySr/2022, Clemson, 6-4, 239 (DS#19 TE) + More +

Some believe the 6-4, 248-pound Galloway can follow in the footsteps of 6-5, 258-pound Jordan Leggett, the former Clemson tight end who now plays in the NFL for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. As a senior in 2016, Leggett recorded 46 catches for 736 yards and seven touchdowns at Clemson. "There's a lot of comparisons that go out there between him and me," said Galloway, adding that he and Leggett have an open line of communication. "I'm just trying to be the best player I can be." Shortly before the 2018 Cotton Bowl, Galloway, then a rarely used freshman, fielded a call from coach Dabo Swinney, who informed him of his positive test. Galloway then called his father. "I couldn't believe it. I thought it was a joke. Just like he thought coach was joking with him," Derrick said. "I knew Braden didn't do anything wrong. That's what I knew in my heart."

The suspension prevented Galloway from playing in the Cotton Bowl and the Tigers' national championship win over Alabama. His appeal to the NCAA in the offseason was denied. He spent most of his sophomore season on the scout team, which is "not something you want to do." With defensive coordinator Brent Venables calling the shots, Galloway said, every practice was intense. The suspension meant his name remained in the public discourse, but not through the lens Galloway would prefer. Uncertainty loomed over his career. During Clemson's first bye week, after the team escaped North Carolina with a 21-20 victory, Galloway traveled to an Atlanta tattoo artist. He got new ink sketched on his left arm: 'Bet On Yourself.' "A lot my tattoos don't have meaning," he said. "But this one, going through last year there was a lot of doubt whenever I came back, what kind of player I would be." - Charleston Post

  03/25/20 - Justyn RossrSr/2022, Clemson, 6-4, 210 (DS#35 WR) + More +

Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney released a video Wednesday afternoon that covered a variety of topics, including his message to Tigers fans and South Carolina residents during this time of uncertainty. The comments were Swinney's first since Clemson's program split up for spring break nearly two weeks ago. Staff members and players were unable to return as Clemson's campus was shut down, and all classes will remain online through the end of the semester.

Swinney encouraged Clemson fans and South Carolina residents to take the coronavirus seriously and do what they can to keep it from continuing to spread. "Stay clean, wash your hands a lot. Be very mindful of where you are. Hopefully you're home safe. But if you are out stay out of groups and try to stay away from sick people and those types of things," Swinney said. "And if you are sick, stay home for sure and we can kick this thing in the tail and get back to our lives here at some point." Swinney added that he is "very hopeful" football will be played this fall but also made it clear that there are other things going on in the country that are more important right now. - The State

It turns out Trevor Lawrence and his girlfriend didn't do anything wrong when they were trying to help coronavirus victims and their families. What sounded like a noble effort but might have been an NCAA violation is OK after all. The NCAA said Tuesday the couple can resume their fundraising efforts after Clemson officials had shut down their gofundme.com page - "Covid-19 Family Relief and Support" - for fear the quarterback was committing a violation.

Lawrence and his girlfriend Marissa Mowry received the go-ahead from the governing body for the page after Clemson's compliance office had halted their efforts Monday afternoon - hours after they launched it. The roller-coaster ride had left Lawrence - one of the leading Heisman Trophy candidates heading into next season - and Mowry, a soccer player at Anderson (South Carolina) University, apologizing for trying to do what they thought was right before the NCAA stepped in. The NCAA said in a statement it did not ask Clemson to take down the gofundme.com page. The NCAA said it will continue working with its member schools to ensure athletes and those affected by the virus are supported. - AP College Football

  03/22/20 - Tanner MuserSr/2020, Clemson, 6-2, 227 (DS#19 OLB) + More +

Muse said Wednesday his weight is down to 223 pounds. He had planned to work out and take meetings with NFL teams at Clemson in advance of the draft, but with the spread of the novel coronavirus he has set up shop in his family's home. The basement has turned into a makeshift weight room, with a squat rack, bench press, Bowflex machine and free weights. "The big thing is going to be just trying to get into football conditioning, where I was training before was mostly (for the) Combine, which is different," Muse said. "Got to start conditioning and hit the weights as well. Just don't want to lose any weight that I've maintained through school."

Muse, whose younger brother Nick is a South Carolina tight end, said he met with seven or eight teams before Clemson's Pro Day last Thursday. A planned workout with the Houston Texans this past Sunday was canceled. He feels good about his draft prospects, though. After participating in defensive back drills at the Combine, he went to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and did linebacker drills. Most of the teams he met with, Muse said, envision him as a linebacker. - Charleston Post Courier

  03/17/20 - Travis EtienneSr/2021, Clemson, 5-10, 215 (DS#2 RB) + More +

There will be no Clemson spring football game in 2020 and no more practices the rest of the spring. The ACC announced Tuesday morning that all athletic-related activities through the end of the 2019-20 academic year have been canceled because of the coronavirus outbreak. The Tigers completed nine practices, their most recent last Wednesday, before shutting down for spring break. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney was asked about the possibility of COVID-19 altering spring practices following Clemson's pro day last Thursday and said he felt good about what the Tigers accomplished if their spring ended up being over. "We're in good shape," Swinney said.

"A lot of valuable development," he said of what was accomplished during the nine workouts. "We've got 15 midyears and it's a lot of development for those guys. They've been in a lot of meetings. A lot of corrections, a lot of installation. So a lot of just team building. A lot of team meetings and things, the way we build our team. We've gotten a lot of that done...I'm glad we were able to do that." Clemson, which has reached the College Football Playoff five consecutive years, is expected contend for the postseason again in 2020 behind junior quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Tigers star running back Travis Etienne is also back, opting to pass on the NFL to return for his senior season. Clemson will open the 2020 season on Thursday, Sept. 3 at Georgia Tech. - The State

The Clemson spring football game is the latest athletics event to be postponed by the coronavirus, Clemson University announced Sunday night. The game was originally scheduled for April 4, but Clemson announced Sunday that all university events, programs and activities have been suspended through April 5, including the spring game. There is currently not a planned date for it to be rescheduled, a Clemson spokesperson told The State. "Clemson Athletics is in full support of the University's announcement. The priority at this time is the safety of our student-athletes, coaches and fans and mitigating the impact of COVID-19," Clemson Athletics said in a statement. "We will continue to engage with the university, local authorities and the ACC as we look to act in the best interest of our community." Clemson has already completed nine of its 15 spring practices, and there is no guarantee that the other six will take place. - The State

  03/12/20 - *Tee HigginsJr/2020, Clemson, 6-4, 216 (DS#8 WR) + More +

Former Clemson receiver Tee Higgins carried around hand sanitizer in his pocket and showed it off during interviews, encouraging reporters to "stay clean." Tigers offensive coordinator Tony Elliott used hand sanitizer as he left Clemson's indoor facility, while Clemson tight ends coach Danny Pearman wore what appeared to be purple latex gloves. Clemson held its pro day Thursday morning as players worked out in front of NFL coaches and scouts, hoping to improve their draft stocks. But there was a noticeably different vibe than your typical pro day with fear surrounding the coronavirus increasing around the country. "I think just people trying to have good precaution with what you're doing every day," Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said of the unusual actions. "And trying to help the cause, kind of slowing this thing down and eventually it'll get under control so everybody can get back to living their lives."

Higgins, linebacker Isaiah Simmons, safety K'Von Wallace, offensive lineman John Simpson and several other former Tigers participated in Clemson's pro day. All of the players that spoke with the media afterward described the day as different. "It's blowing my mind," Higgins said. "They just canceled the NBA season. That's crazy. ... The thing is spreading like crazy, like a wildfire. I just hope everybody can stay healthy from it." Higgins, who likely improved his draft stock with 40-yard dash times of 4.54 and 4.56 seconds, was supposed to have dinner with an NFL team Thursday night, but the team was unable to fly due to the coronavirus outbreak. Instead, Higgins planned to fly to California on Thursday following pro day to continue training for the draft. - The State

  03/12/20 - Justyn RossrSr/2022, Clemson, 6-4, 210 (DS#35 WR) + More +

Clemson receiver Justyn Ross is being held out of contact work in practice because of "some stinger symptoms lingering," Clemson coach Dabo Swinney announced following Wednesday's practice. Ross did not practice Monday and was held out of Wednesday's scrimmage. He did attend the scrimmage but is being held out of contact because "they're just trying to be precautionary with him." The junior had 66 catches for 865 yards and eight touchdowns last season. He was first on the team in catches and second in yards. Ross had 1,000 yards as a freshman and is expected to take an even more prominent role with Tee Higgins moving on to the NFL. Swinney is hopeful Ross will be back to practice when the Tigers return from spring break March 23. "Even though he's fine now they want to make sure that there's no bigger issue or anything like that," Swinney said. "So hopefully when we get back we'll have more information at that time." - The State

  03/12/20 - Isaiah SimmonsrJr/2020, Clemson, 6-4, 233 (DS#1 OLB) + More +

As Clemson's pro day unfolded, NFL head coaches like the Pittsburgh Steelers' Mike Tomlin and the Detroit Lions' Matt Patricia chatted with Clemson's Dabo Swinney. And it never took long, Swinney said, before the Tigers' versatile linebacker Isaiah Simmons came up in those conversations. Simmons, the All-American and Atlantic Coast Conference defensive player of the year, is considered a top-five lock when the NFL draft is held next month. He was the main attractions as representatives from all 32 NFL teams watched at the team's indoor practice facility Thursday.

Simmons, the leader of the nation's sixth best defense last year, showed off his versatility, strength and speed - and why he figures to go very early in next month's draft. "It's like getting three first-round draft picks in one," Swinney said. Simmons was the leader of the country's sixth-best defense, which came a game shy of a second straight national title after a 42-25 loss to LSU in the championship game two months ago. That did not dim Simmons' dominance in the eyes of the NFL. He lined up at several different spots last season, including safety, defensive end and linebacker, and led Clemson with 107 tackles, 16 stops behind the line of scrimmage, eight sacks and 10 pass break ups. "He's just so unique,” Swinney said. “Everybody's looking for that." - AP College Football

  03/05/20 - Hunter JohnsonrSr/2023, Clemson, 6-3, 199 (DS#29 QB) + More +

Hunter Johnson doesn't want to be afraid to make mistakes anymore. After having a 2019 season to forget at Northwestern, the quarterback said he isn't worried about all of the game-ending injuries, the losses and the interceptions that defined his sophomore campaign. "There's good years and bad years," Johnson said. "I'm just moving on, everything about it. There's obviously some things I'm going to take from it, but you can't move forward looking back. I'm not looking back." New offensive coordinator Mike Bajakian is helping Johnson turn the page. After the highly-touted transfer from Clemson finished last season with just one touchdown and four interceptions in six games, Bajakian had a simple message for Johnson when he was hired to coach the Wildcats. Bajakian wants Johnson to be more decisive, even if he's wrong. "If I think I know the answer, (Bajakian) wants me to yell it out," Johnson said. "Be confident, and if you're wrong, then he'll let you know. But he'd rather us go for it and be wrong than just go through the motions."

Coach Pat Fitzgerald admitted he needs to do a better job helping Johnson be more confident during the season. Johnson felt pressure all last year as the assumed replacement to Clayton Thorson, the winningest quarterback in NU history. The Indiana native left all three of his final games of the 2019 season with an injury. His sophomore season ended with a 10-yard sack against No. 10 Minnesota in November, and Johnson finished the year with a 46.3 completion percentage. "What comes with that locomotive is the hype," Fitzgerald said. "It's unrealistic to expect a lot right away because it's new relationships, a new offense, new school. It's a lot of stuff that goes on." Heading into his third year with the program, Johnson knows he needs to play better to claim the starting spot in September. - The Daily Northwestern
