Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence is aware that some fans disagree with his decision to be so vocal while speaking out against racism, and to those people Lawrence has a message: good riddance. "It's important for us to stand up for something. It's easy to stay quiet because some people don't want to make people mad," Lawrence said. "But my thoughts on it are - those aren't the kind of fans, followers, whatever (that) you want, if it makes them mad if you stand up for equality." The Tigers star and arguably the face of college football, Lawrence first spoke out about George Floyd's death and the need for change on Twitter May 29, four days after Floyd died when a Minneapolis police officer kneeled on his neck for more than eight minutes.

"There has to be a shift in the way of thinking. Rational must outweigh irrational. Justice must outweigh injustice. Love must outweigh hate. If you put yourself in someone else's shoes and you don't like how it feels - that's when you know things need to change," Lawrence posted. "I'm siding with my brothers that deal, and continuously deal, with things I will never experience. The injustice is clear... and so is the hate. It can no longer be explained away. If you're still 'explaining' it - check your heart and ask why." The NCAA Division I Football Oversight Committee on Thursday announced the approval of a modified "training camp" model for the 2020 season, including walkthroughs to begin in late July. Because most programs had little or no spring practice due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, schools will be allowed to begin full-squad activities at an earlier date than normal. According to the NCAA's announcement, the new policies assume local and state health policies allow for football activities. "This is the culmination of a significant amount of collaboration in our effort to find the best solution for Division I football institutions," said Shane Lyons, chair of the committee and director of athletics at West Virginia. "Our student-athletes, conference commissioners, coaches and health and safety professionals helped mold the model we are proposing." If schools have their first regular-season game scheduled for Sept. 5, teams could hold mandatory weight training, conditioning and film review for up to eight hours per week from July 13-23. Clemson fans have long wondered why NFL star DeAndre Hopkins refers to himself as a Daniel High alum instead of a Clemson product during introductions for prime time NFL games. On Monday, arguably the best receiver in the world explained why. Hopkins said on an Instagram post that he doesn't associate himself with Clemson during introductions because of the university's ties to John C. Calhoun. The South Carolina native and politician, who was the vice president of the United States from 1825-1832, is well known for his pro-slavery stance. The Clemson University website says Calhoun "declared that slavery was not an 'evil,' but rather a 'positive good."

The honors college on Clemson's campus is named the "Calhoun Honors College" after John Calhoun. "As we watch everything happening in the world, I want to bring up something that has been bothering me for a long time in my community," Hopkins posted on social media. "Clemson University still honors the name of well known slave owner and pro-slavery politician John C. Calhoun on its buildings, signs, and in the name of its honors program." A petition was started four days ago to change the name of the building. - The State

Clemson head football coach Dabo Swinney is catching more heat after a photo surfaced on Twitter Saturday that appeared to show him wearing a "Football Matters" shirt. The shirt added to Swinney's problems after his response to the death of George Floyd that has prompted widespread protests and a national discussion on race. Floyd, a black man, died after Derek Chauvin, a white Minneapolis police officer, pressed his knee into the back of Floyd's neck for more than eight minutes. The tweet showing Swinney in the shirt has since been deleted, but there are plenty of screenshots of the post. Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who has forcefully spoke out against racial injustice, defended Swinney wearing the shirt. Coach Swinney's shirt, in any way, is not mocking the Black Lives Matter movement. He has been wearing the shirt for months in meetings. Clemson wide receiver Justyn Ross had surgery Friday for a congenital fusion in his spine that will keep him off the field this upcoming season. Ross said on social media that the operation "went great" and he was ready to get to work to return to football. Ross was hurt in March during spring workouts with what looked like a shoulder injury. But X-rays revealed that two vertebrae in his spine were fused and he had a bulging disc, according to Clemson coach Dabo Swinney.

Ross is a 6-foot-4 sophomore from Phenix City, Alabama led the Tigers with 66 catches last season for 865 yards and eight touchdowns. He was expected to become Clemson's featured receiver after Tee Higgins left for the NFL after this past season. Ross first made his mark as a freshman, catching 12 passes for 301 yards and three touchdowns in Clemson's two College Football Playoff games on the way to the national championship. The 2020 college football season could be shortened so that conference championship games would be completed by Thanksgiving, according to a report Wednesday by The New York Times. NCAA president Mark Emmert met with members of Congress via conference call Wednesday to discuss contingency plans in relation to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, according to the report. The news came as college football players began returning to campus for the first time since March to participate in strength & conditioning workouts.

Emmert told House members that the season would begin as scheduled on Labor Day weekend if local health guidelines allow it. Teams typically play their final regular-season game on Thanksgiving weekend, with conference championship games the first week of December. However, with a "second wave" of COVID-19 feared as weather turns cold, there appears to be urgency to finish the season earlier than normal. Several schools are planning to return to on-campus classes this fall, but cease in-person instruction following the Thanksgiving holiday. - Birmingham News

Clemson's Travis Etienne is closing in on the ACC career rushing record N.C. State's Ted Brown has held for more than 40 years. Officially, Etienne needs 565 yards this season as a senior to surpass Brown's record of 4,602. That's how the record book sees it, anyway. Brown, though, actually gained an additional 399 yards in bowl games during his Wolfpack career, which if counted would make his record tougher for Etienne to break. But those yards aren't counted for Brown even though the yards Etienne has gained playing in three ACC championship games and five College Football Playoff games are counted toward his total.

That's right - the NCAA, and ACC by extension, each counts eight additional games for Etienne that it wouldn't have counted for Brown. Etienne rushed for 625 yards in those eight games. If Clemson makes the postseason this year, Etienne can possibly end his career having played in 11 postseason games that count toward his statistics - almost a full season's worth - while Brown's three bowl game performances don't count at all. Is this fair? And how can this be? Well, it's a statistical oddity of the NCAA's creation that remains a source of debate within college football circles. Ross has a "congenital fusion" in his spine that he's had since birth, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney told reporters Monday. Ross is slated to have surgery on Friday. The condition was discovered on an X-ray after Ross felt stinger-like symptoms during spring practice. "Nobody to this point knew that he had that, and he's had no issues his whole career. Because of the situation when they did this X-ray, it showed up. Very concerned," Swinney said. "And he had a little bit of a bulging disc as well. And that is an issue. There's been many people play football with a surgical fusion. That happens a lot of times. "But we don't know of one that's had a surgical and a congenital" issue, Swinney said.

Ross missed Clemson's final two workouts of the spring - a practice on March 11 and a scrimmage on March 13. The March 13 workout was Clemson's final one of the spring as the final six spring practices were canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak. As arguably the face of college football, Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence has a large platform. The rising junior and likely No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft used that platform to speak out against "injustice" Friday afternoon. Lawrence, who has 85,000 Twitter followers, sent out a pair of tweets on Friday, presumably in response to George Floyd's death. Floyd, an unarmed black man, died in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Monday after being handcuffed by officers. Video came out later showing an officer kneeling on Floyd's neck for several minutes while Floyd cried out that he couldn't breath.

Several prominent figures have spoken out against the incident over the past several days, including Lawrence. "There has to be a shift in the way of thinking. Rational must outweigh irrational. The commissioners who represent the five biggest conferences in college athletics wrote a letter to Congress, pleading for the passage of a federal law to regulate potential endorsements earned by college athletes hoping to profit off their name, image and likeness. The letter, first obtained on Friday by Stadium, comes as several states have proceeded with passing their own policies on name, image and likeness, forcing the hand of college administrators. Last month, even the NCAA publicly acknowledged its support for updating rules regarding amateurism by 2021.

In the letter, commissioners from the Pac-12, the Southeastern Conference, the Big 12, the Big Ten and the Atlantic Coast Conference took it upon themselves to ask Congress for a "single, national standard for NIL" that would supersede any state law. The letter said that "time is of the essence." "We intend to work with the NCAA to help shape those rules, but the Congressional process should move forward in the meantime," the letter read. "In the absence of federal NIL legislation, we expect most if not all states to pass their own disparate NIL laws in early 2021 to take effect in the summer of 2021 if not sooner." - Los Angeles Times

Clemson football players and members of the men's and women's basketball teams are set to return to voluntary activity beginning June 8. The move comes after Clemson announced its phased return plan last week, including the NCAA's decision to permit voluntary activity for all sports. Student-athletes will be allowed to return as early as June 1 while undergoing a period of social and physical distancing - seven days at home prior to returning to Clemson and seven days after arriving in Clemson. Once this period is complete without symptoms, the student-athletes are eligible to begin pre-participation physicals with Clemson Sports Medicine. NU has a comically crowded QB room, with Indiana transfer Peyton Ramsey a godsend and the enormous favorite to start. Ramsey put up terrific numbers in 32 games as a Hoosier, improving his completion percentage each season from 65.4 to 66 to 68. He's athletic and has terrific leadership qualities. Contrast that with the group of NU quarterbacks who were absolutely abysmal last season, the worst in the nation. Hunter Johnson will push Ramsey if he bounces back from a trying season during which his mother was treated for breast cancer. Andrew Marty is NU's Tim Tebow, a powerful, gutsy, run-first QB who ran through Illinois (111 yards) in the season finale. TJ Green, who beat out Johnson and Smith before suffering a season-ending foot surgery, will return for a sixth season. - Chicago Tribune

Sports fans around the country have been glued to the television during "The Last Dance" centered on Michael Jordan during the past several weeks. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney is no different. "Did I watch it? Are you kidding me. I had my ankles taped, my eye black on. I mean I was daggum ready, man," Swinney said during an interview with WCCP following the first two episodes last month. "It was like mandatory watching in the Swinney household. I sent the whole team a message saying, 'Hey, we end all debate tonight. Make sure you're tuned in.'" Swinney has made his admiration for Jordan well known over the years, and last football season Swinney told the story of how he met Jordan while on his bachelor party. Swinney revealed during his interview with WCCP that in his 20-plus years of coaching he has taken several lessons from Jordan and shared them with his team.

"One of the greatest quotes, and I've used it many times with my teams over the years... (Jordan) was asked one time why he plays so hard on Game 49 on the road or whatever. And his response was, 'Because it may be somebody's first time ever seeing me play,'" Swinney recalled. "Obviously he was magical with his skills, but it was the mental part of it. How hard he worked when nobody was watching and just his love of winning...I just always had such great respect for him, and to me he's just been such an ultimate competitor." It helps to explain why Swinney's teams have been so good against lesser competition during his time as the head coach.
