  10/27/20 - James SkalskirSr/2022, Clemson, 6-0, 228 (DS#20 ILB) + More +

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said one of the defense's leading players in linebacker James Skalski will miss several games with a knee injury. Swinney said Tuesday that Skalski will have arthroscopic surgery on his knee. The coach is unsure how long Skalski would be out. Skalski missed last week's 47-21 victory over Syracuse. Swinney said Skalski had an MRI that revealed the injury. The fifth-year senior from Sharpsburg, Georgia was Clemson's second leading tackler with 105 stops in 2019, his first as a starter. He was second this season, too, before sitting out against the Orange. Swinney said Jake Venables, the older of defensive coordinator Brent Venables' two sons on the Tigers, would start in Skalski's place. - AP College Football

  10/24/20 - *Trevor LawrenceJr/2021, Clemson, 6-6, 213 (DS#1 QB) + More +

Trevor Lawrence threw two touchdown passes and Travis Etienne ran for three scores as No. 1 Clemson shook off a sluggish performance to win their 27th straight Atlantic Coast Conference game and put away pesky Syracuse 47-21 on Saturday. The Tigers opened 6-0 for the sixth straight season, but it took a late burst to get it done - just like usual against Syracuse (1-5, 1-4). The Orange were the last ACC team to defeat the Tigers (5-0 ACC) with a 27-24 victory in 2017. A year later at Death Valley, Syracuse again looked primed for the upset as it held a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter before Clemson's 27-23 escape to keep its national championship season intact.

Despite entering as 45-point underdogs, coach Dino Babers and Syracuse kept the Tigers out of synch much of the game and were down just 27-21 late in the third quarter. But Andrew Booth Jr.'s fumble recovery and touchdown run after Rex Culpepper was sacked late in the third quarter turned the game in Clemson's favor for good. Etienne added rushing TDs of 9 and 1 yard. Lawrence threw for 289 yards with scoring passes of 25 yards to Cornell Powell and 18 yards to Davis Allen. The Tigers broke fast for a 17-0 lead less than 11 minutes into the game. That's when things got away from the five-time defending ACC champion. - Clemson/AP College Football

  10/23/20 - Amari RodgersSr/2021, Clemson, 5-09, 212 (DS#11 WR) + More +

Grisham, from 2005-08, was the first great slot receiver to play at Clemson under coach Dabo Swinney, starting a trend that included Adam Humphries and Hunter Renfrow, who are both in the NFL. Rodgers is the next line. But the 5-10, 210-pound-senior can do more things than traditional slot guys, Elliott said. "They're typically more of your short area, quick, catch the ball and run," Elliott said. "He can actually go and stretch the field, because he has the speed, but then has the ability to go up and high point the ball." Normally, Clemson turns to taller receivers in deep-ball situations; Tee Higgins and Justyn Ross, both of whom are 6-4, filled that role the past two seasons. Though with Higgins in the NFL and Ross working his way back from surgery for a congenital spine fusion, the onus has fallen on Rodgers, whose 83-yard score marked the team's longest reception of the season so far. That's fine by Lawrence. "If Amari has half a step on someone, he's open," Lawrence said Oct. 5. "Once you throw the ball, he's going to accelerate even more." - Charleston Post Courier

The Tigers had 17 different players catch passes against Georgia Tech as the receiving rotation continues to take shape. Amari Rodgers caught six passes for a career-high 161 yards and two touchdowns, lining up mostly in the slot and beating his man time and time again. Rodgers has established himself as Trevor Lawrence's favorite target. - The State

The Heisman favorite passed for 404 yards and five touchdowns while playing only the first half and then one series in the second. He was 14 of 15 passing for 233 yards, with three touchdowns and no interceptions in the second quarter alone. The Tigers outscored Georgia Tech 35-0 during the period. Lawrence did throw his first interception in 364 calendar days and in 366 pass attempts, but other than the one mistake, which came when he was pressured and threw the ball up for grabs, Lawrence was just about perfect. "He's just having fun. I mean he's enjoying himself. He's really focused on the moment," Swinney said. "He's so focused on his execution and his details, his reads, his footwork, all the little things. Just really proud of him." - The State

Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence was picked off late in the first quarter of Saturday's game at Georgia Tech. The interception was Lawrence's first of the season and his first since Oct. 19, 2019 at Louisville. Lawrence was intercepted by Zamari Walton. The pass was intended for Cornell Powell but Lawrence faced pressure and threw it up for grabs. (Georgia Tech turned the ball over on downs a few plays later.) - The State

Clemson easily held off Alabama on Sunday to retain the No. 1 spot in The Associated Press college football poll, extending its longest run atop the poll to seven weeks. The Crimson Tide ran away from Georgia on Saturday night to make the case to be No. 1, but it wasn’t enough to topple the Tigers. Clemson defended its turf with a historic blowout against Georgia Tech. The 66-point rout was the largest ever in an Atlantic Coast Conference football game. Clemson received 54 first-place votes out of 62 from the panel of sports writers and broadcasters. The Crimson Tide got the remaining eight first-place votes. Notre Dame moved up to a season-high No. 3, No. 4 Georgia dropped one spot and Ohio State moved up to No. 5 a week before the Big Ten starts playing. Clemson has been No. 1 since the preseason. The Tigers have been top-ranked 23 times in school history but never more than five times in a season before this year. North Carolina took a big fall, dropping nine spots to No. 14 after losing at Florida State. Oklahoma State is No. 6, with Texas A&M, Penn State, Cincinnati and Florida rounding out the top 10. - AP College Football

Trevor Lawrence brushed off the first interception he has thrown this season and passed for a career-high 404 yards and five touchdowns as No. 1 Clemson overwhelmed Georgia Tech 73-7 on Saturday. Lawrence completed 24 of 33 passes. All of his scoring passes came in the Tigers' dominant first half. Clemson led 52-7 at halftime and kept adding to the lead in the second half, even with second- and third-(and maybe fourth-) stringers on the field. Lawrence left the game after Clemson's first possession of the second half. Clemson (5-0, 4-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) outgained Georgia Tech 671-204. The Tigers compiled an equally lopsided 29-7 advantage in first downs.

The second-longest streak of passes without an interception in ACC history ended late in the first quarter when Zamari Walton picked off a pass by Lawrence. Under pressure from Georgia Tech's pass rush, Lawrence overthrew Powell. Walton ended Lawrence's streak of 367 passes without an interception. It was Lawrence's first interception since Oct. 19, 2019 at Louisville. North Carolina State's Russell Wilson set the ACC record with 379 consecutive passes without an interception from 2018-19. Otherwise it was one of the best games of Lawrence's career. His previous high was four touchdown passes. He passed that mark in the first half, connecting for two scoring passes with Amari Rodgers. - AP College/Clemson Football

  10/17/20 - Travis EtienneSr/2021, Clemson, 5-10, 215 (DS#2 RB) + More +

After the Tigers' 42-17 win over the Hurricanes, reporters asked Trevor Lawrence which Tiger would get his vote after four games. Without hesitation, he admitted that though he may be the favorite, his running back's impact and stats give him a better case, "I don't even know if you can argue that (with) the way he's playing right now," Lawrence said. "I'd vote for him. He's special. I think he's going to keep getting better because that's the type of guy he is. He loves playing ball, learning from his mistakes and getting better every week." Etienne has scored a touchdown in an FBS-record 39 consecutive games and has already tallied 392 yards and four scores. He's also added 245 yards and a touchdown as one of Lawrence's top options in the passing game with 17 catches. - Cleveland Plain Dealer
