  12/05/20 - *Trevor LawrenceJr/2021, Clemson, 6-6, 213 (DS#1 QB) + More +

Trevor Lawrence had two touchdown runs and threw a scoring pass and No. 4 Clemson beat Virginia Tech 45-10 on Saturday to set up a rematch against No. 2 Notre Dame in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game. The Tigers (9-1, 8-1) ended their regular-season schedule with a chance for a sixth consecutive conference title and revenge against Notre Dame after a 47-40 loss in South Bend on Nov. 7 when Lawrence was sidelined by COVID-19.

Against the Hokies (4-6, 4-5), Lawrence completed 12 of 22 for 195 yards with an interception. He ran for 41 yards. Clemson took a 17-10 lead in the second quarter on Lyn-J Dixon's 19-yard touchdown run, and added 28 more in the second half, with Lawrence scoring on a 7-yard run and throwing a 65-yard touchdown pass to Cornell Powell. Derion Kendrick returned a fumble 66 yards for a touchdown, and the Tigers scored off another turnover. Virginia Tech played three quarterbacks because of injuries, turned the ball over three times and rushed for a season-low 131 yards. - Clemson/AP College Football

  12/05/20 - Cornell PowellSr/2021, Clemson, 6-0, 204 (DS#25 WR) + More +

Clemson's senior receiver is in the midst of a breakout season and has made plenty of history along the way. Powell had 176 yards this past week against Pitt and 161 yards in Clemson's previous game against Notre Dame. He has put up three consecutive 100-yard receiving performances, which ties a school record. He is also one of three receivers in school history - joining DeAndre Hopkins and Sammy Watkins - to produce back-to-back 150-yard games. Powell will look to continue his streaks on Saturday against a Hokies defense allowing 274 yards per game through the air. - The State

Lawrence showed few signs of rust after the long layoff. He finished 26-of-37 passing for 403 yards and two touchdowns - one to senior Cornell Powell and one to freshman E.J. Williams. Powell, the fifth-year wide receiver, continued his breakout season by catching six passes for a game-best 176 yards, tying a school record for his third straight game of 150 receiving yards. Senior wide receiver Amari Rodgers finished with 10 catches for 93 yards. "I expect to dominate," Powell said. - Charleston Post Courier

Lawrence wasn't the only starter to return Saturday. Defensive tackle Tyler Davis and linebackers James Skalski and Mike Jones Jr. were all back with the first unit after lengthy absences. The result was a defensive showing to remember. "That was one of our better performances, probably, in the past couple years," defensive coordinator Brent Venables said. The Tigers held a good Pittsburgh offense to 246 total yards and to 16 on the ground. The Panthers also had five turnovers - four interceptions and a fumble lost. After a performance against Notre Dame on Nov. 7 that Venables would rather soon forget, Clemson's defense stepped up in a big way Saturday. The unit tied a season high with six sacks. - Charleston Post Courier

  11/28/20 - *Trevor LawrenceJr/2021, Clemson, 6-6, 213 (DS#1 QB) + More +

Trevor Lawrence threw for 403 yards and two touchdowns in his first game in five weeks - and likely last one at Death Valley - as No. 4 Clemson throttled Pittsburgh 52-17 on Saturday. Lawrence hadn't seen the field on game day since beating Syracuse on Oct. 24. He tested positive for the coronavirus the following week and missed Clemson's next two games, including its only loss this season - a 47-40 double OT defeat at No. 2 Notre Dame. A healthy, eager Lawrence expected to play last week, but a positive test from a Clemson offensive lineman on the Friday before the game led to a postponement at Florida State just hours before kickoff.

Lawrence, a 6-foot-6 junior with a powerful arm, deft touch and flowing hair, was as crisp as ever in leading Clemson (8-1, 7-1 Atlantic Coast Conference; No. 3 CFP) a step closer to the league championship game and a likely rematch with the unbeaten Fighting Irish. Cornell Powell had five catches for 176 yards, including a 43-yard TD catch off a flea-flicker pass from Lawrence. Powell also had an incredible, one-handed grab on a 70-yard pass to the Pitt 5 that set up Chez Mellusi's 2-yard TD run for a 38-3 lead. Lawrence opened the scoring with a 5-yard touchdown pass to freshman E.J. Williams less than four minutes in. By the time reserve runner Lyn-J Dixon burst through for a 1-yard touchdown with 5 seconds left in the first quarter, the Tigers led 31-0 - the most points they had ever scored in the opening period. - Clemson/AP College Football

  11/06/20 - *Trevor LawrenceJr/2021, Clemson, 6-6, 213 (DS#1 QB) + More +

Trevor Lawrence won't be playing against Notre Dame, but he will be on the sideline. Clemson's star quarterback will travel with the team to South Bend for Saturday's Top 5 showdown. Lawrence will have completed the required 10-day isolation period in time to travel with the Tigers, but he will not have passed the cardiac requirements. "He's doing great. He really is," Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said Tuesday. "He's in the meetings. He's Zooming in and all that stuff. So he's doing well. He's just anxious to get out. He's back with us Thursday or Friday, so he'll be with us. He'll travel with us. He just can't play because of the cardiac back-to-play protocol that's in place."

Atlantic Coast Conference rules require players to isolate for at least 10 days from the start of symptoms or a positive test. They must then undergo a cardiac evaluation before beginning a phased return and a re-acclimatization period. There is no set minimum period for the phased return from the ACC. For Clemson athletes, it's typically a minimum of two to three days for the phased return. Having Lawrence at the game will provide another voice of reassurance and another set of eyes to help Tigers freshman quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei. - The State

  11/04/20 - Travis EtienneSr/2021, Clemson, 5-10, 215 (DS#2 RB) + More +

Etienne was awarded the O'Rourke-McFadden Trophy, given annually to the best player in the Clemson-Boston College game. The senior set a pair of records Saturday, becoming the ACC's career leading rusher (4,644 yards) and scoring a touchdown in his FBS-best 42nd career game. With Lawrence out, offensive coordinator Tony Elliott challenged Etienne to be more of a leader Saturday; Elliott said Uiagalelei needed to feel a confident presence next to him in the back field. Etienne hadn't carried the ball more than 17 times in a season before Saturday, but against the Eagles he had 20 carries and seven catches for 140 yards. Expect Clemson to use Etienne heavy again next weekend. - Charleston Post Courier

Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence has tested positive for COVID-19, putting into doubt whether the face of college football will be available to play the top-ranked Tigers' biggest game of the season. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said in a statement released by the school Thursday night that Lawrence is in isolation with mild symptoms. Swinney said Lawrence would miss Clemson's game Saturday against Boston College. The Tigers are scheduled to play No. 4 Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, on Nov. 7. Individuals who test positive for COVID-19 must isolate for a minimum of 10 days. The junior from Georgia is a leading contender for the Heisman Trophy and potentially the top overall pick in next year's NFL draft. He led the Tigers (6-0) to a national championship as a freshman and back to the College Football playoff championship game last season. Clemson's loss to LSU in the title game was the first - and still only - game the Tigers have lost in Lawrence's 32 career starts. - AP College Football

With Skalski out, redshirt sophomore linebacker Jake Venables will start at Mike linebacker for the Tigers. Jake Venables is the son of Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables. He is third on Clemson's team in tackles with 29. Jake will now be in charge of making sure everyone is lined up and understands all of the calls pre-snap. "He did a great job last week, really played well for us," Swinney said. "Definitely thankful we've got a guy like Jake who really understands it and gets it." - The State

The plan all along has been for Trevor Lawrence to play three years at Clemson before leaving for the NFL, but is it a guarantee that this will be his final year with the Tigers? There has been speculation in recent weeks that Lawrence should not play for the Jets if New York ends up with the No. 1 overall pick for the 2021 NFL Draft. A story from Sports Illustrated suggested that Lawrence should "pull an Eli Manning" and "steer himself away from the Jets." Manning told the Chargers in 2004 that he did not want to play for them, leading to a blockbuster trade that ended with Philip Rivers in San Diego and Manning with the New York Giants.

Former Falcons star Roddy White, speaking in a recent interview, went as far as to say that Lawrence should "just go back to Clemson" if the Jets have the top pick. "If the Jets get the first pick don't go. Just stay. Just stay one more year in college and enjoy your time...because it would be awful to get drafted by the Jets," White said. Lawrence, a junior, was asked Tuesday if there was anything that might make him reconsider returning to school. He didn't close the door on playing one more season at Clemson. "I don't know. I mean, we'll just have to see how things unfold. I think there's a lot of factors in that," Lawrence told reporters. "Honestly (I'm) just playing this year, putting everything I have into it. Not really focusing on next year, whether I leave or stay or whatever. Obviously I have the option to do either one." - The State
