  10/07/20 - James WigginsrSr/2021, Cincinnati, 5-11, 209 (DS#6 FS) + More +

The Cincinnati Bearcats are No. 11 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll released Sunday. Cincinnati (3-0, 1-0 AAC) jumped four spots from No. 15 after opening American Athletic Conference play with a 28-7 win over South Florida on Saturday at Nippert Stadium. The Bearcats now have won a school-record 16 straight games at Nippert. Cincinnati is the highest-ranked non-Power 5 program in the AP poll. AAC foe UCF (2-1, 1-1) dropped from No. 11 to out of the poll following its 34-26 loss to Tulsa on Saturday. The defeat snapped the Knights' 21-game home winning streak. Cincinnati was picked to finish second behind UCF in the American Athletic Conference preseason media poll. The Bearcats climbed four spot to No. 11 in the latest Amway Coaches poll. It is their highest ranking in both the AP and Coaches polls since 2009. Then-12-0 UC peaked at fourth in both polls before losing to Tim Tebow and Florida in the Sugar Bowl. - Cincinnati Enquirer

  10/05/20 - Desmond RidderrSr/2022, Cincinnati, 6-3, 213 (DS#3 QB) + More +

For the second consecutive week, Ridder started the game with a turnover. On the fourth play of the Bearcats' first drive against USF, Ridder had a miscommunication with running back Charles McClelland. On a scramble play, Ridder pointed to McClelland to move to his left and get away from the Bulls' defense. But USF safety Mac Harris also saw Ridder point, and he picked off the pass. At one point in the middle of the second quarter, Ridder had 40 passing yards and two interceptions. "I'm concerned with the turnovers," Fickell said. "But I think we've got to do a better job as a staff to find some ways to give him some opportunities." Fickell added, "Sometimes his head is down and (he) played (his) butt off."

According to Fickell, there's always competition between Ridder and backup quarterback Ben Bryant for the starting spot. But in all likelihood, Ridder will remain the starter for the foreseeable future. The Bearcats will likely need Ridder's best to win the American Athletic Conference title this season. In three weeks, UC will travel to face Southern Methodist University and early Heisman Trophy candidate Shane Buechele. Seven days later, the Bearcats play No. 25 Memphis, the reigning AAC champions. A matchup against No. 11 UCF looms in November. With seven games left in the regular season, Ridder still can redefine his junior season. "He knows he can do better," Fickell said, "and he wants to do better." - Cincinnati Enquirer

  10/05/20 - Gerrid DoaksSr/2021, Cincinnati, 5-11, 228 (DS#22 RB) + More +

After splitting much of the carries through the first two weeks between Doaks, Alabama transfer Jerome Ford and sophomore Charles McClelland, Cincinnati appeared to have done away with having the running backs share the load and instead let Doaks take the lead in the backfield. Doaks had 102 yards and a score on 22 carries. Ford had nine carries, while McClelland had eight. "During the week, it was kind of hinted in there as the game plan, but when the game time comes, best back's up," Doaks said. "I think (offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock) saw that I was producing more, so he just kind of rolled with me with more reps." Following his 10-yard score in the first quarter, Doaks now has a team-high six touchdowns this season. "We've been saying that we wanted to find a way to get somebody in the groove," Fickell said. "Had the game been a little bit different, I think you would have seen more of him in the fourth quarter." - Cincinnati Enquirer

Defensive Coordinator Marcus Freeman's group forced five turnovers, all of them coming by way of interception. Coby Bryant had two picks to lead the ball-hawking unit. The senior cornerback, named after the late Kobe Bryant, said he had that "Mamba Mentality." "I definitely did," Bryant said. "I always have to carry that every week in me, and maybe I'll start getting more picks." Ahmad "Sauce" Gardner, nickelback Arquon Bush and linebacker Darrian Beavers each added another interception, as the Cincinnati defense now has forced eight turnovers through the first three games. The Bearcats forced an AAC-best 25 turnovers last season. - Cincinnati Enquirer

  10/05/20 - Desmond RidderrSr/2022, Cincinnati, 6-3, 213 (DS#3 QB) + More +

With backup quarterback Ben Bryant unavailable for undisclosed reasons, Ridder had his second straight rocky start after committing two turnovers in the first half of last week's win over Army. The junior quarterback threw two great back-corner fades Saturday. One connected for a 13-yard touchdown to tight end Josh Whyle, while the other resulted in an interception that was simply just better defense by USF cornerback Christopher Townsel. Ridder completed 16 of 26 passes for 143 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions, including one on the opening drive.

Fickell said Ridder had his head down in the locker room following the win. Senior running back Gerrid Doaks noticed. "I definitely gave him words of encouragement," Doaks said." "That's just one game, bruh, you can't live in the past. On to the next. Everybody doesn't play to their best potential every week. Just look forward to the next game." Despite his struggles, which continued to persist on deep passes, Ridder did have a solid 35-yard strike over the middle to Jayshon Jackson that set up a 3-yard score to Bruno Labelle. "I'm not as worried about Dez as I am about us just making sure we can get a better plan to continue to keep his confidence in what he's doing," Fickell said. "He's still a unique kid." - Cincinnati Enquirer

Gerrid Doaks ran for 102 yards and a touchdown, Tre Tucker returned a kickoff 97 yards for a score and No. 15 Cincinnati had five interceptions in a 28-7 victory over South Florida on Saturday. Doaks had his first 100-yard rushing game since November 2019 when he ran for 123 against UConn. Tucker returned the kickoff late in the third quarter to put Cincinnati ahead 28-7. It was the first kick return TD by a Bearcats player since Ralph David Abernathy IV in the Liberty Bowl against Vanderbilt in December 2011. The game started sloppily with four turnovers, two by each team, in the first 11 snaps.

South Florida used four quarterbacks, with sophmore Jordan McCloud going 12 of 21 for 137 yards with two interceptions. Freshman Katravis Marsh got the start, but he threw three interceptions, including two in his first four attempts. USF tied a school record with the five interceptions. The Bearcats ran for 189 yards, and managing only 69 last week in a win over Army. Doaks who had 89 rushing yards in the first half, capped a 13-play, 92-yard drive with a 10-yard TD run to put Cincinnati ahead 7-0 in the first quarter. - Cincinnati/AP College Football

  10/03/20 - Desmond RidderrSr/2022, Cincinnati, 6-3, 213 (DS#3 QB) + More +

Cincinnati's Desmond Ridder now has more than 5,000 career passing yards after a 258-yard, two-touchdown performance in the Bearcats' 24-10 win last week over then-No. 22 Army. The junior quarterback's 5,063 career yards rank seventh in program history. Ridder is only the eighth Bearcats quarterback to eclipse the 5,000-yard mark. Ridder's play has caught the eye of first-year South Florida coach Jeff Scott. "I think their quarterback has a chance to be an NFL guy, looking at his arm and accuracy and those type of things," Scott said of the 6-foot-4, 215-pound Ridder. Scott knows NFL-caliber talent. The former Clemson wide receiver was the co-offensive coordinator at his alma mater until December, when he was hired by USF. At 38, Scott became the youngest head coach in the American Athletic Conference. In his five seasons at the helm of the Clemson offense, the Tigers made five straight College Football Playoff appearances, advanced to four CFP championship games and won two national titles. - Cincinnati Enquirer

White earned AAC Defensive Player of the Week for his career-high 15-total-tackle (eight solo) performance last week against Army. The 5-foot-10, 205-pound La Salle High School product also had a tackle for loss and a quarterback hurry against the then-22nd-ranked Black Knights. "Team success creates individual success," Cincinnati defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman told The Enquirer. "But that's not to discredit what he did in that game. I think he played extremely well. The first two games, he's played extremely well. He's been the player of the game for defense both games. In my career at Cincinnati, I can't tell you the last time that happened." - Cincinnati Enquirer

The Bearcats' 24-10 home win Saturday against then-No. 22 Army might have been more lop-sided had it not been for veteran quarterback Desmond Ridder's shaky first half. The 6-foot-4 junior fumbled a pitch on a misread option play (returned for a scoop-and-score) and threw an interception on two of Cincinnati's first three possessions. He also struggled with his downfield accuracy before settling down and posting solid numbers (18-for-33, 258 yards, two TDs, one INT). Ridder's top targets Saturday, juniors Michael Young and Jayshon Jackson, combined for nine receptions for 135 yards against Army. - Tampa Tribune

  09/28/20 - Desmond RidderrSr/2022, Cincinnati, 6-3, 213 (DS#3 QB) + More +

If Cincinnati (2-0) is going to have a special season this year, it can't be in spite of Ridder. It has to be at the very least in part because of him. After an up and down 2019, the 2018 American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year separated himself from sophomore backup Ben Bryant during the final week of fall camp to become the Bearcats' starter this season. But the distance between the two quarterbacks may have gotten a tiny bit tighter on Saturday. Ridder started the game with a bad read on an option play on UC's opening drive. The mistake resulted in a fumbled pitch that went 41 yards the other way for an Army (2-1) touchdown. It was the first of two turnovers for Ridder in the opening quarter.

"I think it's about getting into a rhythm," Fickell said. "I don't think early on we were in that rhythm." Ridder threw a pass intended for Michael Young Jr., but the ball sailed high and wound up in the lap of a Black Knights defender. It was one of several miscues, batted balls at the line and inaccurate throws to open receivers for Ridder in the opening half. "I'm sure if you ask Michael Young, he'll tell you that he's got to come down with some of those things," Fickell said. "Their No. 1 job sometimes is to make the quarterback look good. If the ball's not perfect, you've got to come down with it. That's why it's a team." - Cincinnati Enquirer
